Actually, Toronto is further south than Paris, France, it's thereabouts with Monaco, Nice, etc. And Pennsylvania gets as cold as here, just not for as long - our winters are longer than theirs but the snowfall and temperature is quite similar.

The western portions of continental masses always have milder climates and the eastern ones harsher when comparing locations with the same latitude.
The example given here in Portugal to illustrate that is the comparison between Lisbon and New York.
The difference in latitude is in the order of minutes of degree.
New York has a bigger temperature amplitude. to keep it practical, both cities have hot summers but winter is markedly harsher in NY.
Snow is frequent in NY winters and a rare event in Lisbon.
Coriolis is to blame...

(Or to summarize, the oceanic currents arrangement makes it so western continental shores receive warmer waters than their eastern counterparts at same latitude)

Well yes, that, and also landlocked territories far from any large bodies of water tend to get more extremes (warmer summers, colder winters) than those on the coast.

Speaking of the national anthem: I went to a concert in the Chemnitz multifunctional hall (almost sold out despite Corona virus hysteria) last Saturday. The host was the comedian, cabaret artist, film and theater director and multi-instrumentalist Helge Schneider. We laughed heartily and felt very good entertaining.

1st week of working from home and general self-isolation (almost) done; they tell us to expect at least 8 more weeks of this. Outside the streets are deserted, only grocery stores are open, there's nothing on TV but apocalyptic news and reruns.
Of course, could be much worse than this - at least this time around nobody's raining bombs on my ass and the lights are still on - but isolation and lack of social interactions are getting old quickly.
I mean, what can get wrong with being holed up in one place for a prolonged period of time?

I went outside yesterday to buy some food - first time out since the last weekend. Everything is closed down, only grocery stores and pharmacies are open. Stupid people stockpiling toilet paper and fresh food which will spoil in 3 days.
A tip - buy fresh just as much as you're sure you're going to eat and no more; add 1-2 frozen meals or cans to your purchase each time you go to the store; this way you'll have enough non-perishable food to eat if $hit hits the fan, you won't be throwing spoiled food out and at the same time you won't clear out the entire store, everyone will be able to buy what they need and the stores will be able to keep up with the demand and keep their stocks up, and we all make it through this (more-less) in one piece.
Or alternatively - be an idiot and we'll all starve...
