[Let's Play] Order of Battle: World War II

Post by REDrake » 2021-03-22 19:08, Monday

So, I had this game fir quite a while. It has several campaigns, as dlcs.
It feels like what Panzer General 3 should have been. It lacks the large and detailed equipment rooster of Panzer General series, but it adds some interesting ideas like supply lines, front lines and certain missions within scenarios that can bring rewards, mostly free units or leaders.
I played so far the Kriegsmarine campaign which I plan to detail as follows:
1. Danzig Bay

The initial core is made of the battleship Schleswig Holstein, 2 Type 1934 Destroyers and a support ship. Conveniently the support ship can be upgraded right from the start to a cruiser. I did that and upgraded it to a Deutschland class (named Admiral Scheer).

Right from the start German marines atrack Westerplatte with support from my BB. In the meantime the Cruiser and 2 destroyers make short work of polish destroyers and one sub. Then they move to block the bay and kill any merchants trying to leave. A recon Ar-194 is granted for killing merchants. The Polish battery of Hel is annoying though and constantly blast at my ships. I bought a second cruiser a Konigsberg light cruiser to help with it.

In the end scenario ends after auxes capture all VHs...

Next post will be about Narvik...

uhuh, price for complete game on one source 212 €, on other currently around 100, without marketing any ; ...prices went crazy and selling camps separately became practice...

just thinking aloud about computalism but anyway, without trying game - supply I like, hardware specifications I like, style and subject almost overused by me in some 30 years and i went a bit off of it in some worlds without real life, earthly countries ) ...so it is like PC&PC2 worth for collection, but "sometimes in future" (which is becoming increasingly shorter distance)) for me... have fun with your thread and plays, thanks for sharing.

Well I got the game at a gog discount 2 years ago I think. I also don't have all the dlcs. Too expensive. I might "acquire them" illegally for testing purposes to see if they are worth buying.

Also I have no idea what PC &PC2 means. PC in SSI language used to mean Panzer Commander... Best tank simulator I ever played.

Narvik

At the start of the scenario, I bought a Scharnhorst and an Admiral Hipper cruiser. I also had just enough pp to buy a He-52 bomber.

The mission here is to aid the marines landing on Narvik and sink the approaching British Battlecruisers. On top of that I need to sink around 10 other ships (destroyers actually).

I deployed the Konigsberg and the 2 DDs to protect the landing ship. The rest were deployed at the entrance of the fjord to engage the British Fleet.

It turns out that deploying the Konigsberg was overkill. Narvik was only protected by 2 Norway destroyers and one unarmed supply ship. My 2 DDs were enought for this task.

On the other side of the map, in turn 2, the aux Scharnhorst, the core Scharnhorst and the old girl BB from previous scenario engaged 2 British Battlecruisers. Schleswig-Holstein took a bit of a beating, before the Scharnhorsts managed to sink the battlecruisers.

After that my fleet deployed facing NW, as the recon plan spotted an approaching British fleet consisting of mostly DDs along with some cruisers.

In the mean time, in Narvik the Norway fleet was sunk and marines landed. The 3 ships headed back towards the main fleet, but along the way, Konigsberg took damage from some mines.

As the British fleet arrived, I took cautions to prevent them from approaching the Schleswig-Holstein (hereinafter called SH). The enemy destroyers were very adept at launching torpedoes at Scharnhorsts. Luckily they concentrated on the aux.

While I was sinking them mercilessly, the recon plane spotted a second fleet made of destroyers and HMS Glorious the British carrier. Some Swordfish torpedo bombers were also coming my way. I had no fighter to kill them, but I bravely sent Scharnhorst north along with one DD. They made short work of the carrier and the torpedo bomber left the map without even firing a single torpedo.

The scenario ended soon after with a victory.

Wolfpacks

A scenario different from the last 2. You can only deploy 2 subs. Which I bought. 2 IXD subs.

The objective here is to sink 19 merchant ships and as a secondary objective to sink some escorts (with subs). Also, I am to prevent the loss of any sub.

I get the aid of 3 more aux Type VII subs. The merchants are easy to find and they die from one shot. But killing 19, when it takes 3 turns to reload the torpedo tubes, while also resting on the surface to recharge batteries and escaping the watch of escorts? That takes finnese and strategy...

I noticed that my subs can also use their surface guns to sink merchants. I need to do that only with merchants without escorts.

An Aux Fw-200 was sent to me and I use that to harrass some escorts.

The problem with the escorts is that as soon as their sonar detects a sub they all converge on that position and drop cans on that sub. 2 Aux subs where almost destroyed.

A cat and mouse game started, with some help from Fw-200 and luckily, some escorts where tricked in wasting their sonars on areas where I had no sub.

I stopped the idea of firing my torpedoes at the escorts, as it was too dangerous. I killed the 19 merchants and that was that. Victory.

Next scenario

Surface Raiders... Basically the Bismarck Sortie
