Greetings generals and welcome to my thread of the :monster Tank Challenge :howdy

The campaign has scenarios with "Hold VHs" victory condition. To avoid confusion:
- held 4/3 VHs
- held all VHs
- held 2/4 VHs (TV)
the first means i held 4 VHs, but only 3 were required for a BV. The second means i held all VHs required for a BV (and there weren't any "extra" VHs). The third means, i held only 2 VHs of 4 total and in brackets the achieved type of Victory.

I replayed the scenario. At first, after rcn units uncovered enemies, i left the core units around the starting VH and fended of the 2 waves of infantry.
This however left 200 Prestige on the map at scenario conclusion - treachery :eek

So i restarted, played a turn and calculated how far the tank could get. Technically i think it would even be possible to get all map prestige (in particular since you only need to hold 3 of the 4 VHs), but that way the tank would be lagging behind several kills :nyet
Anyway: the core helped defeating the first wave of incoming inf, then rushed westwards. Aircraft soon followed to provide fire support.

I split the core in half. Due to terrain i expected mobile warfare in the north, so i deployed the T-26, 122mm gun, leadered recon and 1x cavalry there - however, in the end the :monster entered the mountains anyway.

The flagged ports on the map looked suspicious and indeed there were 2 Naval Transports available :scratch more prestige :idea
I think if sending faster recons over the river it is possible to grab even more prestige, but since i didn't know the scenario (and didn't want to replay), i happily took what i got.

Assuming that the "Khaylastyn River" from the map is the "Holsten River" from the briefing, i decided to ignore the southwestern SH and fully concentrate on the northern half of the map.

T-35, 76mm gun and mountaineer (and aux construction) remained in the rear to deal with the advanced enemy elements.
Southern auxiliaries, including the cavalry from Hamar Dabaan (14,12) prepared for the offensive across the river towards Handagai (26,16).
All other ground units not involved with defense tasks rushed northeast towards Nomonhan (24,5).

Having already played other of Golothin's campaigns, i was hoping (or rather estimating) from the briefing, that there would be little resistance in the east - thus i made up my battle plan.

The BA-20 should jump around in the east and grab flags.
Other fast units should rush to Grodno, circle around and cut off the roads to the EHs.
The para should take the airfield (34,15) and preferably jump a second time somewhere.
The T-35 and 122mm gun should head straight west for Belostok (4,35).

I had no clear idea of what to do with the cavalries and second BA-3 (it was the only recon car without Fast Speed). Would there be a difficult battle around Belostok ?
Since airforce could help, i decided to play risky and also send the "slow" units to Grodno.

Some of the XP growth comes from the "Obstacle" units, which i attacked in the last 2-3-4 turns of the scenario.

Many of the HQ decisions were just done to burn Prestige and reduce Army Cost (in particular the selling of Attachments, which count in Army Cost in this campaign), in preparation of getting as much Prestige from this scenario as possible.

Paratrooper took the western airfield, then jumped another time later (he had to wait for core to arrive).
Core formed an umbrella around artilleries and drove to the EH.

In all honesty, i didn't think much about the mali when attaching, until Grodno.

If you look at and count attachments against each other (example [Recon + Fast Speed] or [Special Muni + Support] ) then yes, you can make up synergetic pairs - and even individual attachments can work (example [Air Defense] without a partner).
The tricky thing is however: attachments don't exist in a vacuum, they are bound to units (or classes) and their jobs - either their "effective jobs", or "jobs made up by players" (example, to me, tanks are not "combat units", they are "overruners" - everything else (and i mean "everything that can shoot") is a combatant and prepares overruns).

Example, i never could really make use of the [Support] attachment, other than glueing it to artillery and bombers.
For bombers, Support could even have -2 Speed and i would say " :dunno why not? ". For artillery, which generally has only 4-5-6 speed if (half)tracked, -1 Speed is a critical penalty.
I could imagine using Support in defensive scenarios (and then on more classes than just bombers and arty).
In the long run, i think that Support will be limited to bombers and bunkers, which can live with the penalty - other classes need the speed for mobility, considering that players are most often on the offensive.
Of course it can be balanced out with Fast Speed - Fast Speed however penalizes Initiative, which is also very useful for some classes (includind artillery).

On a point-by-point comparison...



* Recon
+Spot; -Speed
:twink Recon units (cars and aircraft) are generally fast enough to go with the penalty and still be excellent in their role. I'm only afraid of AI interactions (i used Recon on AI tanks and infantry/cavalry as well), where -Speed could be crippling.


* Air Defense
+AA/AD; -Ini
:twink makes sense, and is a mindful balance for those classes which usually use them (Flak, Fort, AD, Ftr and maybe ATG units, ships).


* Bridge
"disabled"
:twink makes sense. Whenever it was enabled, i did freaky stuff - like glueing it to recon cars ;D


* AntiTank
+HA; -Speed
:notsure one of the few attachments which make sense for artillery, but IMO -Speed is a killer for arty.
Otherwise, useful for (AI) tanks and (AI) ATGs - however again, -Speed is not good there. But not bad either.
No problem for bombers and fighters.
No problem for ships, since you can always add/remove it based on the scenario at hand.


* Support
+Ammo; -Speed
:dunno as explained, i found the attachment tricky to incorporate into my core, other than
- bombers (no problem)
- arty (-Speed = no go)
- defensive scenarios (little to no problem)
- fighters (no problem)
- maybe ATG units (need to think 2-3 times before attaching, if at all)


* Forward Observer
+Arty/AD bonus (if their ground target is adjacent to the FO); -Ini
:twink i would think twice before adding FO to infantry (where it makes most sense IMO), but in general this is a solid bonus-malus-pair.


* Special Muni
to hit bonus (not to be confused with Effective Attack); -Ammo
:twink i feel sad for my arty (not "extra sad" just "sad", since SM is one of few useful arty attachments) and a little sad for my bombers (with their low Ammo supply), but again i think this is a solid bonus-malus-pair.


* FastEntrench
+Entrenchment; -Ini
:fused in all actuality, i have no idea what to make out of the attachment in the first place.
In the beginning days of Attachments, i glued it to all sorts of units, expecting a huge defensive bonus, especially for my combatants (like StuGs).
Then i was told, that Entrench is ignored for the attacker.
Then i realized, that Entrench can prevent units from retreating, which can be their death sentence.
Then i realized, that for AI i can simply better add Entrench, instead of FastEntrench, for static units - and leave it aside for mobile units.
What is this attachment for :dunno


* Bunker Buster
ignores Effective Defense of forts (class 6 units) and Terrain Bonus (fort terrain) of units; -Ammo
:twink some time before putting my Efile project on hold, i had been experimenting with mali and arrived at -Ammo for Bunker Buster too :lol
In a sense ground infantry (tanks, ATGs...) get mixed with specialized inf/units, mixing their equipment (main weapons and additional weapons like flamers, grenades, towed guns...), which makes resupplying them more difficult. Bunker Busting Ammo for other units (aircraft, arty) is either more bulky and/or otherwise makes resupply more diffucult.


* Fast Builder
Faster Building; -Ini
:notsure the only units which can have Fast Builder are those which can build. They have 1 (0 in a few cases) Ini and should usually be away from the frontline anyway. Could have also been -Speed or [no malus, but higher price] instead.
(IMO it is not necessary to pursue a theme from beginning to end just for the consistency, if it makes little sense)


* Fuel Pods
+Fuel; -Speed
:dunno those units which have most use for it (aircraft) can live with it.
However, sometimes you just wish that unit X had more Fuel (desert, in general big maps), even though its 45 are actually not "few". However, then the Speed malus can be critical (especially big maps) - it then comes down to what other attachments you want for these units (if any), in order to glue on Fast Speed.


* Fast Speed
+Speed; -Ini
:) not exactly a great bonus-malus-pair, since Ini is needed here and there.
But not bad eiter.



Overall, yes i can accept the malus for "my" attachments (considering what i do glue on where), though i would wish that some mali would be different or non-existent, for a wider utility of attaching.

As for the cost...
At the beginning of a campaign it is very tricky, that attachments count in Army Cost.
Later in the campaign it is mabye balanced out rather nicely. AFAIR i never played campaigns, where attachments counted in Army Cost, so i will think about it in the second half of the campaign.

Took 3 tries to get through without unit losses :stress (or rather "without important units lost" ).
Not deploying your airforce can be a key (at least it saves expensive repairs), but a [C] unit with 3 or 4 XP-bars can be a life-saver.

Convoy units: BA-3 "Det.Def", 3x FAI, 2x infantry and (via air transport) the paratrooper = 7. The bought 3x BA-20 joined them.
While Victory Conditions (like Escape Units) count for all players of a specific side, don't count depend on the AI to help you with this job. Example, in this last playthrough the AI could have retreated 3 units in turn 5, but only retreated a recon car (and i guess if it had some more move points left, it wouldn't have retreated too). But back to business.

The bought cav from turn 3 was subsequently used/offered as spotter/cannonfodder, but it survived.
I was also considering to let the Wolozyn airfield get lost, recapture it and use my airforce, but in an earlier attempt this was very costly :2cents

Wolozyn (2,14) changed sides a couple times (it is a SH "for owner" allowing the enemy AI to buy there :stress ).

The trickyness here is the highly experienced (3-4 bars) enemy arty. Arty is one of the classes to grow XP the slowest, thus seeing these units with as much or more XP than other units is seriously :crazy that, and the highly experienced enemy fighters (3-4 bar Bf 109 F4, some serious skycleaners).

Originally i planned to let the second tank start in the northwest, hammer a breach into enemy lines and block routes to the EHs. After deployment i quickly saw the futility of the idea, thus i restarted and changed tactics, starting from the south.

In the south i deployed 1x flak, KV, rcn car, T-34 and the 76mm gun "Over.Att". Without a bridging unit to cross the Desna river, these units had to go through Yelnya proper (and i had to pray that there was no similar defense line behind the city, as i found earlier in the northwest).

In the northeast i deployed the :monster, 122mm arty, 1x KV and rcn car.
2x motorized inf started at the far away SH, but didn't see combat.
