CC#09 - BWDIC @100 (from Darek's PG2 archives)

Post by panzerdarek » 2021-09-13 21:38, Monday

This one is my oldest AAR from my first ever CC run together with JP's Panzers veterans. My experience with the game was very limited at the time and I was afraid this piece may be too hard for a beginner, but I managed to complete it with a little help of my friends from JP's Forum. Note, that my English was rather poor at the time, so reports are short (I see many errors now, but will not correct them). There wasn't available any tool for AAR as well (at least at the beginning), so everything must be noted "by hand". Re-posting this oldest AAR will require more effort comparing to newer ones, so I will do it in parts.

Darek's CC#09 at 100
Steve Brown's BWDIC, with AK2000 - probably 0.58 beta - with PG2 1.02G exe / completed in May'2002

00. Operation Compass

Late start, but I haven’t enough time this weekend.
This first scenario is like warming-up, not very hard but suitable to introduce to desert.

Result: BV (-1 turn). Prototype: Spitfire VC.

Core lost: none.

Core goes to next scenario:
1x A12 Matilda II (85)
1x A12 Matilda III CS (62)
1x A9 Cruiser I (105)
2x OQF 25 Pdr (Tr/96, Tr/53)
2x Daimler Scout (88, 45)
3x Indian (97, 72, 45 all in Trucks)
1x Engineer (UC/91)
1x Hurricane IA (145)
1x Spitfire VC (0).

01. Attacking Tobruk

Before battle:
* Upgrade: all Indian infantry to Australian
* Purchase: 1x OQF 25 Pdr (Truck) and 1x OQF 3,7” AD (UC)
* Sell out: none.

Action:
Some troubles with ATY-bunkers and re-supplying when going to the west VH but another happy-end.

Result:
BV (-2 turns) / Prototype: Spitfire VC.

Core lost:
None

Core goes to the next scenario:
Tanks
1x A12 Matilda II (142)
1x A12 Matilda III CS (145)
1x A9 Cruiser I (231)

Anti-tanks
None

02. Beda Fomm

Before battle
* Upgrade: none
* Purchase: 2x A13 Cruiser IV, 1x A12 Matilda II and 1x OQF 25 Pdr (UC)
* Sell out: Spitfire VC (proto) and UC (recon)

Action:
(Note: I must one time restart the scenario from reason of losing Agedabia just before the last VH capturing. It was good lesson for me)

I think that 2 fighters are suitable to my core and it’s highest time for putting more tanks to my army. I decide to sell last prototype and make some purchases.
I start from capturing airfield, Mersa El Brega and VH in center. After this auxiliaries and my new buying Engineers (in truck – deploying in Mersa) directed to El Agheila on the west of map. Main forces at the same time hold defensive position next to Agedabia and wait for finishing job on the west (really good Steve’s advice). Finally advanced and took Agedabia.
In this scenario I get at least my first leader (exactly 6 of them).

Result:
BV (-2 turns)

Core lost:
None.

Core goes to the next scenario:
Tanks
2x A12 Matilda II (266, 115)
1x A12 Matilda III CS (281-CombSupp)
1x A9 Cruiser I (352)
2x A13 Cruiser IV (85, 18)

None

Arties

2x Engineer (UC/215, Tr/107-DeteDefe)

Fighters
1x Hurricane IA (267-ShocTact)
1x Spitfire VC (220-BattInte)

Bombers
None

03. Mersa El Brega

Before battle
* Upgrade: Engineer (Tr) to Engineer (UC)
* Purchase: 1x 3” Mortar (HW)
* Sell out: None

Action:
I’ve got only 342 of prestige. Buy UC for my Engineers with leader and for test one 3” Motrar (in horse wagon), which Blastix advertise. I’m not sure, do it may be useful in this scenario, but nothing to lose (it’s cheap).

I retreat from two VH on the west and stand around Mersa El Brega. After this my core (deployed far from place of action) start the race with Germans. Enemies smashing two of auxiliaries (infantry and captured Italian tank) and stopped on my line of defense ahead Mersa. My tanks arrive in time for stopping German counterattack from the south. Hard battle started.
After several turns I’ve got a real chance for BV, but that big gun behind VHs knocked-down my advance. Not good performance, but I must accept this result (according to my own rules of play).

Result:
TV (Last turn)

Core lost:
None

Core goes to the next scenario:
Tanks
2x A12 Matilda II (379, 206)
1x A12 Matilda III CS (367-CombSupp)
1x A9 Cruiser I (410)
2x A13 Cruiser IV (189, 49)

3x Australian (Tr/313-DeteDefe, Tr/192, Tr/177)
2x Engineer (UC/243, UC/157-DeteDefe)

Fighters
1x Hurricane IA (372-ShocTact)
1x Spitfire VC (314-BattInte)

Bombers
None

04. Defending Tobruk

Before battle
* Upgrade: None
* Purchase: 2x 25 Pdr AT (HW)
* Sell out: None

Action:
Reading about 25 Pdr AT abilities I decide to buy two of them. I use also some prestige to overstrength (+3) my leader Matilda III.
Sorry, but British ATs are not the Germans 88mm. After hitting by one of those monsters my new paint smelled 25 Pdr AT was overran by ugly Pz38.
Another of my brave Aussies gets the leader. Aggressive Attack may be useful.
Not very difficult scenario.
I’m happy with new prototype Mosquito IV (HA10, SA12 - it’s like flying tank, but air attack 0 – looks a little strange).

Result:
BV (-1 turn) / Prototype: Mosquito IV.

Core lost:
1x 25 Pdr AT

Core goes to the next scenario:
Tanks
2x A12 Matilda II (506, 315)

05. Operation Brevity

Before battle
* Upgrade: 1x OQF 25 Pdr (Tr) to OQF 25 Pdr (UC)
* Purchase: 1x OQF 3,7” AD (UC)
* Sell out: None

Action:
I decided to play safe and don’t try to win the scenario. It should allow me to pass over Operation Battleaxe.
When I played earlier this campaign several times with Waffenkammer efile I never won the Battleaxe. That scenario always finished the BWD&I campaign for me.
This time I changed the way and held defensive position to the last turn without advancing to Germans. Nevertheless one of my tanks got a leader (Combat Support).

Result:
Loss (deliberated)

07. Operation Crusader

Before battle
* Upgrade: 2x OQF 25 Pdr (Tr) to (UC), 1x A13 Cruiser IV and 1x A9 Cruiser I to 2x A15 Crusader II CS
* Purchase: 2x OQF 25 Pdr (UC)
* Sell out: 1x OQF 25 Pdr AT, 1x 3” Mortar, 1x Mosquito IV

Action:
(Note: I must one time restart the scenario, after last turn Victory, from reason of heavy loses – 4 units, over 1500 of prestige).
Interesting scenario with hard battle. After lesson taken from the first attempt I was playing more careful. I split my forces on two groups. Main forces attacked along the shore. Second group attacked two VHs on the south. Auxiliaries on the west held their positions and made diversion only for AI forces absorbing.
Reinforcement, which showed later on the east, I kept in place until Steve’s “ghost” tanks arrived. They were warmly welcomed.
I lost my most experienced Engineers. One of Matildas got a leader (Bridging).

Result:
BV (-1 turn)

Core lost:
1x OQF 25 Pdr AT (HW) --- “Defending Tobruk”
1x Engineer (UC) --- “Operation Crusader”

Core goes to the next scenario:
Tanks
2x A12 Matilda II (629, 449-Bridging)
1x A12 Matilda III CS (708-CombSupp)
2x A15 Crusader II CS (573, 410-CombSupp)
1x A13 Cruiser IV (209)

1x Hurricane IA (494-ShocTact)
1x Spitfire VC (391-BattInte)

08. Operation Venezia

Michel, thank you for your detailed explanation of Combat Support ability. It’s very helpful. Now I can use my tanks with CS leaders properly and more effective.

Before battle
* Upgrade: None
* Purchase: 1x Engineer (Tr)
* Sell out: None

Action:
Very few of prestige is available. I only replace lost Engineer unit by new one (with truck).
I lost four VHs in AI’s first and second turn. I held only one, the southwestern. After three turns I recaptured all of them.
No loses, no leaders, no prototype – I’m a little disappointed.

Result:
BV (Last turn)

Core lost:
1x OQF 25 Pdr AT (HW) --- “Defending Tobruk”
1x Engineer (UC) --- “Operation Crusader”

09. Operation Aberdeen

Before battle
* Upgrade: None
* Purchase: None
* Sell out: None

Action:
Very few of prestige again. I spare it for future.
Only one VH to capture, but all of my own possessions were under hard German attack.
I played careless and to slow. I didn’t capture German VH (airfield) in my second turn and that cost me so much.
In next AI turn I lost one of my leader tanks and one of my arties. After this I easy captured airfield and got BV. Exactly one turn too far.

No proto again – I’m worry about my budget.

Result:
BV (-1 turn)

Core lost:

10. Withdrawal from the Gazala Line

Before battle
* Upgrade: None
* Purchase: None
* Sell out: None

Action:
(Note: I must one time restart the scenario, when after fourth turn lost three VHs and took heavy loses).
I knew from my first attempt that the speed is most important in this scenario. Win it in the second turn or die.
As in previous scenario only one VH to capture. In first turn I advanced with my main forces to fortified AI’s VH so close as possible. At the same time I sent auxiliaries and part of my core army to defensive tasks.
In AI turn enemies attacked very furious, but my people held their positions.
In my next turn I forced heavy German arty on the SW of my final target to shot away all its ammo. After this my engineers blown up the bunker in enemy VH and I won.
Finally I got my fourth proto, nice Sherman tank.

Result:
BV (in 2nd turn) / Prototype: Sherman III

Core lost:
1x OQF 25 Pdr AT (HW) --- “Defending Tobruk”
1x Engineer (UC) --- “Operation Crusader”

11. Mersa Matruh

Before battle
* Upgrade: None
* Purchase: None
* Sell out: None

Action:
I advanced quickly to the only one German VH and won without loses.

Result:
BV (in 2nd turn)

12. First Battle of El Alamein

Before battle
* Upgrade: Matilda II (with leader) to Valentine VIII
* Purchase: None
* Sell out: None

Action:
(Note: I must restart the scenario. First attempt was a totally disaster. I lost two of VHs – including El Alamein – and almost a half of my core).
I knew from my first attempt that I need more power against German tanks. I decided check the Valentine. I overstrengthed also my both leader tanks and Crusader to 15.
In the north auxiliaries with two of my core tanks (Crusader and Matilda II), two arties and two Aussies attacked and captured VH near the coast.
Rest of my core I located in the center, near Alam el Onsol and Ruweisat Ridge. They attacked in western direction and captured other two VHs. My new Valentine with Combat Support Matilda did very good job breaking German defensive lines.
In the south auxiliaries held their positions.
Battle was very hard and some of my units gained much experience.
No loses this time. I got two new leaders.

Result:
BV (-7 turns)

Core lost:
1x OQF 25 Pdr AT (HW) --- “Defending Tobruk”
1x Engineer (UC) --- “Operation Crusader”
1x Crusader II CS (CombSupp) --- “Operation Aberdeen”

1x Spitfire VC (516-BattInte)

Bombers

13. Alam Halfa

Before battle
* Upgrade: Cruiser IV to Valentine VIII
* Purchase: None
* Sell out: None

Action:
Note: I must two times restart the scenario. I found this scenario more difficult than all played before. Two hard lessons were needed until I went through.

Following Jawn’s advice I upgraded my last Cruiser to Valentine. I overstrenghted also three of my tanks to 15.
In the north auxiliaries with a little help two of my core units (Australian and 25 Pdr) held El Alamein.
Main forces I located in the east of El Alamein. They attacked in the south direction (Alam el Onsol and next roads crossing).
Some forces I located next to Alam Halfa Ridge. There were four of my tanks (2 Valentines, Matilda CS and Crusader), one arty (with leader), one recon (with leader) and one Australian. At the beginning they held defensive positions, and next counterattacked and captured German VH with strong 88-mm AT gun.
In the south auxiliaries immediately left their positions and advanced in the north direction. They took heavy loses. Only one Valentine (last living unit) reached south VH, tried to recapture it and almost did (BV-4 was close). Italian tank from VH retreated but in the next turn SEM arrived and blocked VH again. Quickly brave Valentine were KIA by German reinforcements. It cost me additional five turns and BV.

I lost my first recon and almost lost my veteran Hurricane (decreased to 4 when fought with two German Me-109).

Result:
V (missed BV by 1 turn)

Core lost:
25 Pdr AT --- “Defending Tobruk”
Engineer --- “Operation Crusader”
Crusader II CS (Combat Support) --- “Operation Aberdeen”
25 Pdr ART --- “Operation Aberdeen”
Daimler Scout --- “Alam Halfa”

14. Operation Lightfoot

1st attempt – totally failed.
2nd attempt – got V, but lost 4 of core tanks and 4 of infantries. With only 561 of prestige continuation is impossible. Next restart is necessity.
In both cases the reason of troubles was the same – VH (13,13) – in northwest from Ruweisat Ridge. Capturing other VHs was not so difficult (perhaps four turns before BV completed), but this fatal double thirteen VH made the difference between the glory and shame. Before capturing this one, Germans always recaptured another and gave my forces heavy loses.

I don’t give up and will try again.

Before battle
* Upgrade: Crusader II CS and Matilda II to Sherman V, Matilda III CS to Sherman III
* Purchase: None
* Sell out: Sherman III (1-bar)

Action:
I sold my inexperienced Sherman III tank – it was useless and always KIA in my two previous attempts. Prestige spent on upgrade and OS for my other tanks.
After two good lessons I concentrated much more of my forces and air attacks on infamous VH (13,13) and took it as soon as possible. Captured other of VHs without big problems.
No loses and no new leaders. I got new proto – 17 Pdr AT. Not so high costly as I need thus I don’t sell it. I hope it may be useful.

Result:
BV (-3 turns) / Prototype: 17 Pdr AT with UC

Core lost:
25 Pdr AT --- “Defending Tobruk”

15. Operation Supercharge

Before battle
* Upgrade: None
* Purchase: None
* Sell out: None

Action:
Clearly easier scenario than played before, but I made a mistake. I thought that a little Free French contingent on the south should be enough to take southernmost VH. I was wrong. Italian forces with two big 210mm guns easy stopped French advance. Other of VHs was captured without problems and I send reinforcements on the south, but it was to late for reaching BV.
I lost second of my infantry units – brave Australian (3 bar of experience). It was destroyed by combined attack of PzII-D tank, 75mm-leFH gun and Stuka 87-D bomber.
I got new leader for my AD unit. Devastating Fire looks like additional gun.

Edited: Exactly I got two of new leaders. Another one is Ferocious Defender for Engineer unit.

Result:

Core lost:

16. Medenine

Before battle
* Upgrade: None
* Purchase: None
* Sell out: None

Action:
I deployed as Steve wrote in briefing: all my infantry, 3 of 25Pdrs (OS to 15), 2 Shermans and recon.
Advancing of my forces to Medenine was slowing down by mixed Italian and German contingent. They had three good located arties and breakthrough cost me plenty of time. At the same time auxiliaries was defending Medenine against overpowering enemy forces. It was really irritating to see how Stukas attacking my units when two experienced fighters were grounded on the airfield.
When my battle group finally arrived I started to capture VHs one by one. Some troubles with two VHs on the other side of river occurred. I captured earlier the northern one, but before the southern was taken Germans recaptured it. The tank with Determined Defense leader now held it and was not easy to beat. In addition my arties was without of ammo and couldn’t support last attack. It cost me V. No core lost this time.
I surely can do it better in second attempt but don’t want to restart again and accept TV.

Result:
TV (missed V by 1 turn)

Core lost:
25 Pdr AT --- “Defending Tobruk”
Engineer --- “Operation Crusader”
Crusader II CS (Combat Support) --- “Operation Aberdeen”
25 Pdr ART --- “Operation Aberdeen”

17. Operation Pugilist-Gallop

Before battle
* Upgrade: None
* Purchase: 1x 25 Pdr with TR, 2x Ghurka
* Sell out: None

Action:
I split my core in two parts:
- Group West: 2x Ghurka, 2x Sherman V, 2x 25 Pdr, 3,7” AD and same of auxiliaries – directed to Foum Tataouine (across the mountains),
- Group East: the rest of my core – directed to Mareth Line (along the coast).
In my second turn a half of 6 attacking enemy bombers was destroyed. In next one the rest. Unfortunately my last experienced recon was killed few moments later by 88mm AT with Devastating Fire leader. It went too far as was finishing one of 75mm arties.
All my forces and Free French advanced slowly on the whole map width. Meanwhile another of my units was smashed – inexperienced Ghurka. They didn’t prepared to such a hard battle.
I took all VHs several turns before BV, excepting the northwestern one. Advancing to Matmata was to slow and I finally got only V.
In this very hard scenario I lost two units. I’m especially sorry about losing my last recon with leader.

Result:

Core lost:

18. Operation Supercharge II (3rd attempt)

Before battle
* Sell out: Ghurka
* Upgrade: 2x Australian to Ghurka
* Purchase: 1x Daimler Scout

Action:
On the scenario’s beginning I had only 408 of prestige. I sold inexperienced Ghurka and upgraded my Australian to Ghurka. Of course bought new recon, Daimler Scout again. After this left exactly 0.

As in previous battle I split my core in two main parts:
- Group West: Daimler Scout, Ghurka, Sherman III, Valentine VIII, 4x 25 Pdr, 3,7” AD – directed along the line Matmata >>> El Hamma (+ a little group in this area to defending my only one VH – Valentine VIII, 17 Pdr and Ghurka),
- Group East: the rest of my core – directed along the line Mareth >>> Gabes.

I changed my tactic a little. This time deployed more artillery on the west and at the beginning I eliminated FlaKs, thus my airforce was more useful. Next I directed fire of my arties on combo of four 88 ATs and eliminated one by one. At the same time my Engineers supported by Shermans and artillery captured Gabes. Several moments later my forces joined and directed to the mountains in north end of map. On the way to the last two of VHs I stupidly attacked Marder with my Valentine and was decreased from 8 to 1 points. I thought that this tank must be smashed in the next AI turn, but arties saved it by suppressing enemy and didn’t allow shooting. Before final assault I placed two good arties on the north bank of the lake (in swamp) and hovered bunch of my auxiliary airplanes over enemy to make resupplying more difficult.
I’m under impression of my experienced Ghurka performance. The last act of the show belongs to them. Earlier they did good job too, equally against bunkers, tanks, infantry or artillery.

For me rather hard scenario but after a lot of practice I got finally good result. No loses, no leaders, no proto.

Result:

19. Operation Vulcan

Before battle
* Sell out: None
* Upgrade: None
* Purchase: None

Action:
I deployed all Shermans, 17 Pdr, all arties with UC, recon, all of infantry and fighters.
With support of arties and my CS leader Sherman advancing wasn’t hard. Unfortunately my old Hurricane was KIA after double attack of Me109. As a little recompense for that loss I got Overwhelming Attack leader for 17 Pdr. No proto again.

20. Operation Strike

Before battle
* Sell out: Daimler Scout
* Upgrade: None
* Purchase: 2x Daimler, 3x Mortar and Paratrooper

Action:
I bought Paratrooper only for defending Gafour. Airfield was clearly too far. Mortars bought during the game for supporting approach to Pont du Fahs.
Auxiliary Americans captured Bizerte before BV limit (in turn 9). They chose the way through Mateur. It wasn’t very hard task (with exception of 2 PzII tanks with leaders, which landed on the shore near Bizerte and brawled).
Much more troubles had British auxiliaries supported by part of my core on the line Medjez el Bab – Massicault – Tunis. Medjez el Bab was captured first – in turn 4. Arties and 88s around Massicault needed more care – taken in turn 6 – and finally Tunis in turn 9 (as Bizerte). After this part of forces joined eastern group to capture last VH.
Free French directed Pont du Fahs but was stopped by artillery. Indian reinforcement appeared just in time to get that VH in turn 9 (exactly as Bizerte and Tunis). One unit of mortar boys was KIA – smashed by artillery.
Eastern battle group (my core 2 TK, 2 IN, RC, 2 AR and 3 auxiliary guns) attacked Zaghouan on the south side of mountains, captured it in turn 2 and swept away all enemy around one turn later. Next hold position and repulsed German counterattack (with Tiger) form the north. After that little contingent directed Pont du Fahs to help French, the rest directed northern VH and airfield. Unfortunately another counterattack (with the second Tiger) slowing down my advance in this direction. Only thanks my CS leader tank I got last turn BV (turn 11).
No leaders and no proto, as usually.

29. Cape Bon

Before battle
* Sell out: 2x Mortar, Paratrooper
* Upgrade: Engineer with TR to Commando
* Purchase: Engineer and Ghurka (both with TR)

Action:
I sold inexperienced units that were buying temporarily in previous scenario. Knowing after reading AARs that Commando may by useful in near future I decided to upgrade one of my experienced Engineer (lost truck, but I think buying new inexperienced Commando can’t be so effective). Bought two additional infantry units. I hope they gain some experience quickly (if survive). Rest of prestige spent for OS some arties.
I split my forces on two groups: greater on the north and smaller on the south. Commando got the important task to capture northernmost VH.
Following Pzmaniac’s tactic Commando landed 4 hexes from El Haouaria VH and after quick advance smashed 88 mm FlaK that defended it by one shot in turn 4. Captured VH in next turn under fire of big gun that Steve located smartly on little island. I think it’s impossible to get BV in this scenario without dropping Paratrooper or Commando. Thanks for good tip Pzmaniac.
The northern group directed Menzel Bou Zelfa with small detachment directed in south VH. Menzel Bou Zelfa was captured easy in turn 3. At the same time detached forces were in real trouble with German arties. New Ghurka unit after reducing to 2 points retreated. That VH was taken in turn 6. At the same time main group faced Menzel El Heurr that was defending by Italian contingent and some Germans in mountain. CS tank broke through the enemy by two overruns and luckily took VH in turn 6.
The southern group directed along the coast slowly and captured Hammamet in turn 7.
No leaders but got a proto.

21. Operation Fustian-Marston (2nd attempt)

Well, well, well. A flood of nasty German tourists spoiled fully deserved Italian holidays for my boys.
We must temporarily retreat and reorganize but surely be back very soon.

Before battle
* Sell out: Cromwell IV, Ghurka and Daimler
* Upgrade: 2x Valentine VIII to Churchill Crocodile
* Purchase: 17Pdr with TR, Humber II

Action:
I made big rearmament before start of scenario. Upgraded both Valentines to Crocodiles – they have the same movement, only point fewer HA but much higher SA and GD – and bought another 17Pdr and cheaper recon. Probably new units bought at late stage of campaign didn’t survive – but who knows.

After lesson from my first attempt I decided to go much slower (not trying to get BV) and with my forces more compacted. Battle was hard and I advanced slow, very slow, almost too slow. Unfortunately I was right about survivability of my rookies – both were KIA. Luckily I got last turn TV. No leaders again.

I hope next scenarios are not much harder than last one. If not, I must prepare for real troubles.

24. Operation Baytown

I got loss in my first attempt. I captured all of VHs except the northernmost. The forces located at first in Bagnara (Crocodile, Engineer and 25 Pdr) were too weak for successful advance. Reinforcements were sent too late and didn’t help. I must restart and split my forces more clever the second time.

Before battle
* Sell out: None
* Upgrade: None
* Purchase: Paratrooper

Action:
2nd attempt.
After lesson from my first attempt I sent to Bagnara stronger contingent: Combat Support Sherman, Determined Defense Engineer with experienced 25 Pdr gun (last two OS to 15). One turn later the new Paratrooper landed near tank. I hoped they can hold defensive position with support of CS leader.
In the second British VH settled Crocodile, another Engineer and 25 Pdr.
At the last British VH (which were empty at the start) landed OS to 15 Commando in turn 2. Spitfire was put into action in turn 4 after airfield capturing.
Successfully captured both northernmost and southernmost VHs in turn 8 this time and a little later the rest. BV was so close.
Commando did very good job in this scenario, held its VH and killed 5 enemy units (tank, StuH, sIG Bison and 2 infantry). My younger Engineer unit gained 265 experience points without killing any enemy!
I don’t know why Steve put two Tribal destroyers as reinforcement. They were completely useless in this scenario.

26. Operation Honker

Before battle
* Sell out: Sexton
* Upgrade: 2x Sherman V to Firefly IIC, 17 Pdr to Archer
* Purchase: None

Action:
I started quickly this time. Crocodile captured central VH in the mountain in turn 4. During the couple of turns infantry cleared all enemy around that VH.
In AI turn 5 the first Panther G appeared north of Monte Cassino. Only one turn later strong German forces (with Tiger and Panther D) attacked my contingent from the west - along Liri Valley.
In my turn 7 auxiliary Paratrooper smashed bunker that guarded northernmost VH by one lucky shot and my OS to 15 Commando captured it without any fight. It was really surprising and too easy. At the same turn Poles captured first of VH in Monte Cassino and German counterattack in the valley totally failed (they lost all of armor: Tiger, Panther, StuG and recon). The second Monte Cassino VH was taken in the next turn and only both western airfields left to conquer. In meantime Gebirgsjaeger badly damaged in the forest one of my Fireflies (was reduced to 2 and must retreat) and FW-190 did the same with my Spitfire (was reduced to 1 when got out of ammo).
I took southwestern VH in turn 10 and tried to clear the way through bunkers to the last one. That VH fell in turn 12 and I won.
My OS Archer did very good job there and auxiliary bombers were very important. No loses, no proto and I did it in the first attempt.

Result:

27. Assaulting the Gothic Line

I was very busy this week but finally I’m back on the battlefield.

Before battle
* Sell out: None
* Upgrade: Sherman III to Firefly VC, 2x Ghurka to Commando
* Purchase: None

Action:
It was easy scenario for me. My three OS to 15 Commando units captured all three VHs one by one – last in turn 7. It took so many of time because only one air transport was available. Rest of my army did some simulated fight along the mountain to keep busy German forces.
No loses and nice proto – Centurion tank.

28. Breakthrough

I don’t know if the new Centurion without any experience may be useful, but I keep it and try to gain 1 or 2 bars in this scenario (I hope). I always can sell it if fails (and survives).

Before battle
* Sell out: None
* Upgrade: OQF 3.7 inch (DevaFire) to Crusader AA I
* Purchase: None

Action:
I split my forces in four groups: the southeastern (Firefly, Crocodile, Archer, 2x 25Pdr, 3.7 inch AD, Engineer and auxiliaries), the southwestern (Firefly, Crocodile, 2x 25Pdr and Polish auxiliaries), the marine corps (Firefly, Centurion, 2x 25Pdr, Daimler, Crusader AA, Engineer and auxiliary 17Pdr) and the airborne (3x Commando – deployed over the ocean).
Knowing from AARs that AI is very aggressive in this scenario I decided play careful and rather slow (BV isn’t necessary on that campaign’s stage and practically haven’t a chance for another proto). Thinking about the next scenario I would limit losses to the minimum.
Airborne group crossed the map, captured southwestern VH (on the river’s fork) in turn 4 and held it under the fire of StuGs and Panther G.
At the same time marine group captured little airfield in the north tip of island. Unfortunately it was occupied by damaged FW-190 and I couldn’t deploy my Spitfire before the next turn when my Crusader destroyed that plane.
The SE group advanced along the shore and took Argenta VH in turn 6. One turn later the SW group joined it and captured airfield VH near Argenta.
In turn 7 strong German reinforcements appeared near the VH what my 3 Commando units defended. Now 2 Panthers, 2 StuGs, 2 Hetzers and 3 SS Infanterie attacked my airborne contingent. I sent them some air support and hoped that they prevail - and they did it.
At the same time my marine corps had a hard time with the northeastern VH (especially with one big 21K38 gun). When enemy panzer group came from the west - troubles increased. Finally in turn 10 that VH was taken.
In the turn 11 my weakened to 4 points Spitfire was shoot down by Me-262 jet. Such a poor end of long and brilliant career.
After that the race against turn counter started. Besides I had trouble with lack of fuel but fortunately in turn 13 my 3,7 inch AD in Universal Carrier saved the day. Attacking from the transport smashed artillery bunker in the last VH and opened the door to Victory.
Excepting the loss of Spitfire not so bad performance. I got two of new leaders: Resilience for 25Pdr and Aggressive Maneuver for Daimler.

Result:

30. Thermopylae

Before battle
* Sell out: Centurion (proto)
* Upgrade: 2x Churchill Crocodile to Centurion
* Purchase: None

Action:
First attempt. I sold inexperienced Centurion and upgraded both Crocodiles to Centurions. OS some artillery and infantry units but unfortunately wasn’t enough prestige to do the same with tanks). Prestige left: 0 (exactly).
I deployed Archer and 2x 25Pdr on the southwest (in sea transport) and 3x Commando above them (in C-47). The rest of my core I deployed on the east around the British deployment hex. Not deployed any core units in the north.
First attempt failed. Restart is necessary – wrong deployment and I must play more careful. Perhaps I shouldn’t upgrade to Centurions and OS my tanks instead? Next report after weekend.

BTW: It was two Russian units (Kazaki - Cavalry) under my control. Another strange thing was Stuart tank in C-47 air transport. I’m not sure Steve intended it or it was a bug?

Next attempts

Before battle
* Sell out: Centurion (proto)
* Upgrade: 2x Churchill Crocodile to Firefly IIC
* Purchase: None

Action:
I sold inexperienced Centurion and upgraded both Crocodiles to Fireflies IIC (cost free) this time. OS all tanks and artillery to 15.
I deployed Firefly, Archer, 2x 25Pdr and 3,7 inch AD on the southwest (in sea transport) and 3x Commando above them (in C-47). The rest of my core I deployed on the east around the British deployment hex. Not deployed any core units in the north.
2nd attempt
In turn 1 I retreated Greek units from southwestern VH and auxiliaries from airfield VH with a little hope that they survive longer. Three Commando units reinforced southeastern VH defended by Greeks.
In turn 4 southwestern VH was recaptured, and both of central VHs in turns 10 and 12. All of four auxiliaries what landed on the north were smashed by only one T-34 tank. Not able to reach last one located on the airfield I got loss. An advance with my all forces around south end of mountain and then along the valley was too slow. I must change my tactic.
3rd attempt
I deployed my forces as previously and played the same at the beginning, but later changed my plan. I sent only small group consisting Firefly, 25Pdr and Engineer for stiffening defense of southeastern VH. I didn’t plan to advance along the valley this time. The rest of my forces directed along the shore after landing.
This time southwestern VH was recaptured in turn 5. My forces on the shore were split in two groups: first directed two central VHs and second directed airfield VH. Group in the valley after defending their VH started to advance slowly.
First of central VHs was taken in turn 8. I bought additional Commando unit and landed it north from airfield in mountain. In spotted that VH is guarded only by one ISU-152 AT unit. In turn 11 I took last two VHs and got BV. No core loses in this attempt.

Result:

Thanks for all people supporting me on that hard way through desert and mountains and who wrote very detailed and helpful AARs, especially for Programmer, Helmic, Pzmaniac – and of course Steve, who did so good piece of excellent work making his BWD&I campaign.

That's all for CC#09 - thread may be archived. Results summary: BV-19 / V-5 / TV-3 / L-1

BTW, I have forgotten those times, when we have to write full reports manually, collecting units stats (like experience level, etc.) directly from the game. :thud Luckily "Thunderbolt's campaign report tool" appeared at the late stage of this CC making that easy. :phew

Image, I have never seen an AAR like this before. It used to be really time-consuming - not comparable to today's possibilities in OG.
