CC#32 - No Price to High (from Darek's PG2 archives)

Post by panzerdarek » 2021-11-12 20:32, Friday

I'll keep publishing my old archived reports until the last one, and then have to start finally some new CCs :lol
Para have to move my reports to the archives at a good pace, to avoid flooding this forum with spam... ;)

Darek’s CC#32 at 100
No Price to High (by MG) - played with Composite efile v.7.0 and PG2 2.20 exe - completed in Dec'2009

1. Operation Gauntlet

Small puzzle mission scenario. My units barely fought – only Hurricanes gained their bars and one of them even a leader. Missed BV by one turn.

Result: V

2. Fire in the Sky

Before the battle:
Did nothing with empty bank.

Another training scenario with mission to complete and real fight only on the air. Big amount enemy planes occurred, so your units may be surprised. One of Hurricanec was reduced to 1 str. pt. After triple attack of enemy fighters. Last turn BV, but no proto.

Result: BV

3. The Darkest Hour

Before the battle:
Purchased 2 strange looking tanks.

First important thing, I have added the special ability letters to the efile, as have noted that many units have some unexpected skills. If I did it at the beginning, perhaps could take BV in the very first battle, using AD gun for hex capturing and advancing with my infantry faster.

Before the battle decided to try cheap Churchill tanks (with E ability) hoping they may be useful against some fortifications that were expected on the shore.
It's another training scenario, but of course with real battle this time. I was able to take all three VHs temporarily, but they were retaken quickly by strong German counterattacks supported with massive artillery fire. I tried to keep position as long as possible and gain some experience for my troops, but was forced to retreat one turn before TV limit to avoid core losses.
I'm little disappointed, as only one fighter passed next bar here, the rest of units didn't achieve much.

4. Operation Spartan

I've played this training battle twice.
For the first attempt I purchased Priest, 1.5 inch truck AT and upgraded Infantry transport. Took objective one turn after BV limit with auxiliary units, but nothing happened. I supposed that hidden VH may appear later, so fought for experience and waited for it. Unfortunately nothing happened and I lost the battle.
I decided to make some intel research, what I have missed, and try it once again. Purchased: Motorcycle for Infantry and Sherman III. Started with my core units faster, directing to the bridge with hidden VH. Reinforcement auxiliaries tried to repeat previous achievement. Unfortunately I wasn't lucky enough this time. Auxiliary units have been decimated and weren't able to capture enemy HQ objective, when my units have been badly damaged on the bridge perimeter. So I lost the battle again. Anyway, considering big amount of experience collected by all my units (excepting useless AD and undeployed planes) with two nice leaders for infantries, I accept this result and go further. Perhaps in real battle my troops can perform better.

5. Operation Husky

This campaign is going to be harder and harder to me with each battle. This one I have played three time, first two attempts have been played to the end but lost, and the third one was finished with last turn TV.
Perhaps my core is to small and unit composition is not efficient? After both unsuccessful attempts I decided to remove slow Churchill/Crocodile tanks, seeing that Sherman is quite powerful in this efile. So, finally I sold core AD, which was completely useless, as well as 2-bar Churchill. The money collected allowed me to upgrade remaining Churchill to Sherman and purchase my first arty, self-propelled Priest. That way my army consist of 5 land units now.
The battle went very slowly, but after previous recon I knew which way to go, at least. Auxiliaries which landed in the north, captured all three VHs in that area, and Paratroopers helped to take the last objective by the way, flying from captured airfield to the German HQ bunker. Most important unit was auxiliary Typhoon here, as without it I have never go through this battle (I want one in my core). My core supported by auxiliary planes and paratroopers managed to take both German VHs in the mountain, but it was hard task to complete and the last turn TV was the best I could do.

Now I will save the Choice scenario as starting point to both alternative legs (Italian and Normandy). I plan to do both, but I'm not sure if it will be possible in present situation to complete even single one. If I find some battles impassable for me with current army setup, then perhaps I'll replay the CC form the beginning, to avoid some mistakes which I did.

BTW: I have noted strange issues with some units here (before somebody will ask: I have newest Composite 7.0 efile from MG's site, campaign downloaded from CC link and newest Datup form Jul 2009).
1. On my side in first reinforcements group was unit named 44th Tank Reg., but in the boat I found Soviet tractor S-2 (transport class). I used it later as hex keeper.
2. In my landing zone on the shore, enemy had another strange unit, called 16th AT Batt., which was Russian SU-76M (ATY class). It was killed quickly and didn't any troubles.

6a. Operation Baytown

At HQ I decided extend finally my forces, so added new units: 2x Infantry and Lynx recon. Upgraded Infantry to Flamethrower.
The battle went flawless, without bigger troubles. Main problem were obstacles and rough terrain on the way to southeastern VH, which was hardest to reach on time. Just after landing lost recon, so purchased another two the same type, to assist 2 task forces formed of my core. Just before final assault lost the second recon on southeastern VH perimeter. Due to heavy traffic got TV two turns before limit. All units gained some valuable experience, and two new leaders for tank and arty.

7a. Towards Ortona

Before the battle sold Lynx recon. Upgraded one infantry to Flamethrower. Purchased 25Pdr.
I noted that 1-bar units are available now for buying, so is very nice as you can replace lost unit or add some new one easier. With completely green units it's very problematic, so you must maintain your experienced core units carefully avoiding loses for each price. When new units with some experience are available it's easier to accept casualties among your core.

The battle wasn't particularly difficult. My forces drove all the way along seashore from the south towards main northern objective, Ortona town. Australian auxiliaries captured both mountain VHs, on the wast and in the center.
Watch hidden VH on the main route! Finally, with some support given by battleship, arrived to Ortona and captured it exactly in regular victory limit. New arty got leader. BTW, I don't understand some strange leader names here, as “Withering Fire” or “Field Intelligence” – I must read descriptions to figure out who is who. Why to mess with standard SSI names which everybody knows?

I must say that Sherman III is quite good in this efile, almost equal with Tiger. I knocked down some PzIVs on the way easily. Towed AT, as 17Pdr is not so efficient as in AK, as it has not organic movement at all. An auxiliary 17Pdr proved to be useless, so I will stay with Sherman III/Firefly tanks and perhaps some SPAT, as Archer.

Note: When looked at the next battle map I have noted that S-2 Russian tractor again in my forces. The unit was called 6th Armored Div. of UK. After opening the save game in Suite occurred, that S-2 unit occupy slot #573 in the efile, when #574 is occupied by UK Churchill tank. I changed that tractor to tank then.

I DECIDED TO REPLAY MY CC32 RUN FROM THE BEGINNING!

1. Operation Gauntlet

OK, knowing what to do from my previous try I've got BV in last turn and very nice Spitfire proto.
I think this is an optimal result for this battle and it can not be done even single turn faster.

Result: BV / Proto: Spitfire IXB

2. Fire in the Sky

I thought it will be easier this time due an extra fighter, but it wasn't possible to deploy it on the carrier, so must stay at HQ.
Anyway battle went smoothly and without single moment of scare, as all enemy planes have been eliminated one by one without loses and the sky was clear 2 turns before BV limit. The battle ended one turn later. My Hurricane got the same useless leader as in previous run.

Result: BV (-1T)

3. The Darkest Hour

Before the battle purchased Grant and 25Pdr.
Standard fight to survive battle. I decided to leave northern VH and sent Rangers to the center, hoping that reinforcement allow to keep VH in the middle a little longer. My core forces were grouped next to airfield VH trying to keep it as long as possible.
This time I was forced to retreat faster (just like DB) heaving single tank only. Took TV 2 turns before limit.

At HQ before the next battle I have hard decision to make. This is the only opportunity to purchase Typhoon TB, but it will be useless during the battle, as air forces can not be deployed there. Spending big money on Typhoon may be profitable later, but may cost me a loss in Spartan. Anyway, taking a loss you can still go further and gain the same money as with another results, so ...

4. Operation Spartan

After couple of restarts with different unit composition I finally did it – BV with one turn in spare.
I hardly tried to buy Typhoon and find such a unit combo that allow to score decent result here. Must sold one of Hurricanes (I thing 2 core fighters should be enough, with Typhoon which may help a little as well) to have prestige for additional 25Pdr. Purchased Scots during battle to help in HQ defense. Previously I have never captured the bridge, as advanced too fast and without proper artillery cover, so caused big loses when enemy counterattacked. This time with two arties I did it. Lost core Infantry, but both objectives were captured in the same turn, one before limit.

5. Operation Husky

I was afraid a little before this try, as my forces composition looked suspicious, but all things went better than expected.
Before the battle sold, as previously, useless AD gun and spent all money on upgrading Infantry to Engineer.
Probably this is most played scenario in this campaign for me. Previously played it three times to get last turn TV finally. This time got regular Victory, so I'm learning. Both Typhoons again did good job, reducing tanks, bunkers and entrenched units by 3 to 5 points with each strike. German northern VH with HQ bunker was cleared twice by them (wiped out bunker and MG then), so Paratrooper could take it comfortably landing directly into it.

So it's time to make choice again. Now I will check Normandy path for a change.

6. Juno Beach

Before the battle purchased Wolverine and Scots. That's all what I could afford.

I played this battle extremely slow and careful, knowing (from my previous experience at Juno) that aggressive tactic with rather weak forces won't be successful, causing costly strength or even units losses, which is hard to compensate with very limited resources. This approach allowed me to won the battle, but it took all available time for TV, when the last remaining objective (SS VH in the middle) was captured.
The battle was intensive, so my units gained a lot of experience and two leaders (Scots and Spitfire). New Wolverine collected 218 and 3rd Scots even more, 251 experience points. Green Scots were badly damage at the beginning and must be kept behind the lines. My Typhoon performs good, having 347 experience just after 2 battles. It is very efficient in bunker killing with HA 11 and (E) ability.
I hope the next battle will be passable, as I have only 288 in my bank.

I noted, that MG have priced new Infantry types very high. They are better just by couple of points in some stats, but cost twice. Luckily, probably by mistake, he left both type of Scots available, so I can still purchase the cheaper version of it.

7. Fall of Caen

Before the battle sold green Scots and purchased Wolverine.

So, referring to previous battlefield's news, I started the game from the save made couple turns earlier, after receiving a leader, and repeated the approach to airfield carefully, knowing what is waiting behind the horizon. Sent three weakened planes to avoid resupplying the monster gun, so worked good and it can not shoot any more. After capturing the airfield VH the rest was very easy – so looked almost like all movable German units were thrown on me in furious attack before VH capturing, and only some static units remained. I was surprised, when game was ended after taking only Caen VH, when the last one behind the river was still in German hands.
Must say that this battle was very intensive, even if started and ended slowly. I've got 3 new leaders on Grant, Engineer and Typhoon. Perhaps two of them are not so great, but now my bomber should be real killing machine.

8. Closing the Gap

Before the battle purchased Scots.

Having usual amount of prestige, what means less than 300, your options at HQ are rather limited. The only possible purchase was cheaper Scots Infantry (thanks MG for your mistake).
This battle was definitely easiest of Normandy path, just like holiday after Juno and Caen. I'm very impressed with my bomber performance, as it can kill 7 sp. Tiger or bunker with single shot now. Got BV two turns before limit easily.
New leaders are coming like rain now – got another three for both ATs and one arty. All things looks much better, when Wolverines are very efficient against bunkers and armor with good experience and leaders.

9. Water Rats

Before the battle upgraded Scots to Bridging and transport for Engineer.

Not very scaring, but time demanding battle. Difficult terrain (rivers and swamps – so one bridging unit was very helpful) is the main opponent here excepting some elite German units, represented mainly by paratroopers. Armored units were presented rarely and eliminated easily. Some artillery bunkers and coastal batteries made some damage to my units, but were killed gradually.
After about half way to BV it looked quite easy and I was hoping for that result of course, but at the end my advance was slowed down by terrain, obstacles and defenders, so I managed to achieve only TV, and it was done in the last turn for it, with big dose of luck, as auxiliary level bomber cleared furthest VH, which was taken by Bishop – the single unit which survived landing operation on the northern shore.

10. The Rhineland

Before the battle: sold Bridging, purchased 25Pdr, upgraded Scots to Engineer and OS'ed arties.

Again long battle on difficult terrain. This is annoying when your wheeled units barely move , even if you are on the road theoretically. There must be some unpleasant terrain settings prepared.
So, battle went slowly in three theaters. Northwestern auxiliaries took both objectives on their side before BV limit. My core units started in the northern area and directed to the east and then to the south along the Rhine river. They captured three objectives on their way before BV limit as well. Another auxiliary group, which appeared late on the south, attacked remaining VH closest to them. It was taken at the end, unfortunately one turn after BV limit. Perhaps with better weather (it was couple of snowy turns) BV could be possible with more efficient use of Typhoon.
I don't remember when I was not able to win battle in the air, but this time I couldn't eliminate nasty Me410, which was always capable to retreat with couple strength points and came back repaired at full strength. My fighters weakened by duels with enemy planes and softened accidentally by flaks, couldn't be refitted of course.

So I have passed all obstacles practically, as the last battle may be even lost to win the campaign.

11. Liberators

Before the battle: spent all prestige for OS'ing some units.

The last a little tricky scenario was nice and easy, to have good memories of camp probably. I haven't pushed extremely so got comfortable regular Victory only (2 turns after BV limit). I'm sure BV was fairly possible with more active approach. MG use his trick with briefing again (remember Spartan), so be prepared.
The third arty got its leader here, completing nice self-supporting combo. My brave old Hurricane shot down mighty Me262, when was attacked by that jet plane (not very important that it was 1 sp. then).
