Technique's LSSAH v.2.0 with AK efile v.0.79 - played with PG2 2.20 exe / completed in Dec'2009

1. Prosna River

Before the battle purchased all my army, that means obligatory 3 SS Infantry units.
The battle wasn't hard, but I sent not enough forces to capture farther Wieruszów objective, so missed BV clearly by 2 turns. Closer VHs in Bolesławiec and Opatów have been taken easily and defended against Polish infantry and cavalry counterattacks. One of my units got nice leader when fighting in Opatów.
I must confess that I actually live about 25 km of closest VH mentioned here, so don't be surprised that I was able to remember and spell all those names easily. :)

2. Warta Crossing

When you play with rules that limits your army growing, the aspect of decision making at HQ is practically missing.

I must restart scenario quickly, when deployment mistake was obvious. The map is divided on two by line of 'impassable river' hexes, which is not visible at first sight without terrain analysis. So, having 3 deployment at the beginning you may use only 2 of them, on the south of that border line. If you settle your unit into single northern deployment hex, it will be cut of action to the end of battle.

So, after restart I put my units into deployment hex one by one. Strong auxiliary forces were sent directly to the easternmost VH crossing the river. My core units with the rest of auxiliaries directed SE firstly and then to the east. The Bridging unit helped to cross the river where the bridge was destroyed. Both VHs on the northern line of advance were captured without trouble inside the BV limit. The farthermost VH on the southern line had more obstacles on the way, so I missed BV by two turns when captured it finally.
BV was not easy to achieve, as majority of units went on foot here, but perhaps if I sent my quick core units with northern group first (they were not critical on the south, as some reinforcements appeared later in that area), and then made flanking maneuver attacking that last VH from behind (which was fairly possible, as even slower units after NE VH capturing were able to be on time and helped with the last VH capturing) I could succeed.
Luckily BVs are not very important in this campaign, as use of prototypes will be probably very limited, only if they fit to core composition pattern.

3. Bzura Pocket

It was very intensive, but interesting battle. Polish forces attacked crazy, so for some time played rather defensively after capturing northeastern VH and a while later Sochaczew VH as well. In the meantime reinforcements arrived gradually. Most of them were sent to Sochaczew area. When another northern VH, just behind the river, has been captured, I sent strong artillery contingent with one PzII tank and couple of infantry units from Sochaczew behind the river, towards the last VH. After heavy artillery bombardment small tank overran defenders and I've got last turn BV.

4. Holland

Before the battle, according to briefing, added one artillery unit to my forces. The most expensive I could afford, 15 sFH37.

This small battle was just like holiday comparing to previous one. Easy walk across well known (from previously played CC) map. Dutch forces were not able to make any serious troubles for my experienced units supported by massive artillery contingent. Got BV with one turn in spare.
No leaders again, and protos are probably disabled, but it's not very annoying when you must keep your army composition strictly defined by rules.

5. Advance to Dunkirk

Before the battle sold new 15 sFH37 and purchased the same unit, but with 1-bar of experience.

Another very small scale battle, but funny. I was surprised seeing, that will start it with 5 units only. The things went smoothly from the beginning and 3 VHs on the hills were captured easily, as well as the next one on the road to British VH behind the river. Unfortunately my advance have been stopped then by entrenched defenders, just before that last VH. Rainy weather together with some supply problems cost me enough time to miss the BV by two turns (VH was cleared one turn earlier, but only arties were able to drive into it). One of infantries passed 5th bar without leader.

6. Skopje

Before the battle big rearmament was ordered, to expand my forces according to briefing to total amount of 10 units (3xInf/1xPio/2xAT/2xArt/1xRec/1xAD). I sold expensive 15 sFH37 and purchased two cheaper 10,5 leFH instead.. Upgraded best infantry to Pioniere and purchased new SS Infanterie. In addition I bought two StuGs, PSW 231 and towed 3,7 Flak for the rest of cash.

The battle plan wasn't complicated, just straight forward advance along the main roads, but I lost some strength of my units on the way, so must play careful to avoid bigger casualties. After breaking through border line defenders I spent some time to capture two cities behind the mountains. My core forces directed Skopje then, but the final assault wasn't easy due obstacles placed on the way. Closer Skopje VH was captured inside BV limit, but further one, secured by roadblocks, needed more attention. My seriously worn infantry units (at strength about 4) were not able to clear the road fast enough, so I missed BV here by two turns again. My newest infantry was killed by artillery on its way when tried to cross the river on Skopje perimeter.

7. Vevi

Due to limited deployment I decided to wait a while with loss replacement.

Tricky small scenario with only six units to play. I deployed all three infantries with both arties and recon. The advance was disturbed at the beginning due to nasty 25Pdr arty with Dev Fire leader, which made some troubles and forced me to restart the battle, when blown out one of my arties with double shot. After learning that lesson I played slower and went through without losses, but missed BV by one turn. Luckily two units got leaders, not particularly exciting, but I'm still content with this result.

8. Metsovon Pass

Having only 200pp I was not able to replace lost infantry, so I sold useless Flak, expecting that new infantry may be more efficient than AD which didn't single shot so far.

Again small scale entertaining battle. The start was slow, when during two first turns I only drove my units, but then action started. The Greeks attacked furiously from the mountains and I spent couple of turns defending and clearing area around captured VH. Then I advanced as quick as possible, removing nasty artillery placements which kept the road under crossfire. When I positioned my Pioniere next to northernmost VH, I was counting on good weather during next turn, and it came. I could use auxiliary Stuka then, which helped in defenders wiping. I got BV one turn before limit.
So, it's time to visit Russia.

9. Dubno

Purchased SS Infanterie and Flak to have full unit roster.

Due to swamp hexes deployment, both arties and Flak must take a rest at HQ.
Just a while after start decided to stop and change my battle plan, seeing that Russians attacked furiously.
I withdrawn all auxiliaries behind the river, forming defensive line there. They fought bravely during several turns wiping enemies which tried to cross the river.
My core units wasted couple of turns on swamp bath, but finally managed to went out. They directed south to deal with Russian task group which occurred there. There were 4 tanks (leaded by KV), recon and arty spotted. My core units with some help of bombers swept them all in couple of turns. Afterward I sent recon and three infantries via southern bridge hoping to approach and attack southern Russian VH from the south.
Main group of auxiliaries and the rest of my units initiated a counterattack, seeing that majority of enemy units were defeated. Some units started to fight directly after crossing the river, as still some Russians were presented, but I detached 3 infantry units supported by 2 arties and went directly to northern VH.
Both task groups reached their objectives exactly in the last BV turn, having some supply problems on the way. Unfortunately direct attack was impossible, so one additional turn was needed to capture them and BV have been missed slightly.

10. Uman Encirclement

Nothing to do at HQ.

I did nothing in my first turn, just settled for good defensive positions and prepared to fight. Next the Russian waves came, as they attacked with all movable units, counting many tanks with KV-1 and KV-2 as well (lowered strength luckily). So, the couple of turns were necessary to clear area, then advance started. The breakthrough operation was hard, as needed entrenchment eliminating under heavy fire of long range artillery, which control area were overlapped.
All obstacles were removed and I reached last northwestern VH in the last BV turn with two units attack, but only softened defending unit. VH was taken one turn later, so means typical almost (B) Victory. My recon got useful leader which should be handy for nasty arties removing.

11. Kherson

Nothing to do at HQ.

Seeing big city map I decided to spent almost all resources on OS of three best infantries and both arties maximally.
The battle went pretty well. Auxiliaries took southwestern VH, the rest of them was taken by my forces.
I tried to play carefully with StuGs, but they were badly damaged anyway and must be hidden of enemy sight for some time, despite of spending major part of gained prestige on units repairs. The star was my Pioniere, which unit being at 15 sp was able to clear VHs with double stacked and entrenched units in single turn.
Active attitude rewarded me with BV one turn before limit. Two units, infantry and arty, got leaders. Finally got my first prototype, Ju87G bomber, but decided to reload till get something I can use according to rules. In the second try got FW190 fighter, but next PzIV tank, which should be usable later, so I will keep it. I know it will be inexperienced, when purchased units may go with one or two bars later, but having free unit in my core should be handy from economical point of view.

12. Melitopol Counter Attack

At HQ purchased half-track for Pioniere.

Much more time demanding battle, which covered large map area and plenty auxiliaries were attached to my forces. They needed to be commanded, but helped a lot.
First Russian line of defenders was hard to pass, secured in front by the river and supported by massive artillery positions (luckily only 76,2mm pieces). Auxiliaries took both southern VHs with big time margin. Northern VH needed more work and time, but was taken 4 turn before BV limit as well. Unexpected hidden VH surprised me when appeared suddenly, so I was seriously concerned what to do with it having very limited forces in that area, but luckily reinforcements were sent in close perimeter of that VH, which solved that problem immediately.
My core forces advanced in the middle of the map, from the west to the east, capturing airfield VH on their way. Then StuGs were sent to help auxiliaries in the north, where couple of light enemy tanks were spotted. The rest of my forces were split on two groups. Very small task group, containing only Pioniere with one arty, directed to northwestern objective and captured it easily (was left empty). The rest directed south first, where took one VH behind the river, and then went to the last remaining VH on the east. I almost forget, that during operation my core forces must deal couple of times with Russian reinforcements appearing (or teleporting) from nothing just among my advancing units.
Firstly I counted on BV with three turns in spare, but that last VH was secured by impassable river, and the only bridge was blocked by 15sp entrenched infantry. Clearing the way through the bridge and capturing objective needed exactly so much time, as I had spared, so BV just on time was achieved.

13. Assault on Rostov

Again 1-bar units are available, so I replaced my great experienced AD gun (was sold) with new, a little bigger one.

It was simple battle with straight advance from the west to the east. One PzDiv with SS Viking went along northern river directing on easternmost VH. My units with another PzDiv directed Rostov with all VHs placed there. The plan was simple and worked good, as Russians tanks and planes did not appear at all. All Rostov VHs were captured one turn before BV limit, and remaining farther VH on the northeast was taken one turn later. Another BV in a row, but in the next scenario TV or loss are only options.

14. Rostov Defence

Desperate defensive operation, with simple plan just retreat as many aux units as possible into Rostov perimeter and form defensive ring around the city with 2 VHs. The rest were given without fight to avoid bigger casualties on overstretched lines. At the end Rostov was secured as well as airfield VH on the west side of map, which was held successively by Slovakian units.
At the beginning of battle one of my fresh infantry units was killed by single shot of 15 sp Russian engineers.

15. Kharkov

General reorganization time, so many decisions was made at HQ. Many options with different economical impact, so new army composition needed couple of simulations and took a lot of time before starting the battle. Finally I decided to sell Flak, which was too expensive and with 1-bar only, when new 2-bar units were available. Purchased 3 new infantries, 2 arties, small Flak and Pz IVG tank. Upgraded green prototype tank to Tiger and both STuGs to better IIIG model.

The battle went smoothly as Russian opposition was not tough and auxiliaries provided to help my units were good quality and quantity. My army advanced from the south to the north, in two columns, Leibstandarte with Totenkopf on the west side, when Das Reich with another Pz Div on the east. Only some supplying problems as well as traffic jam escalated by road obstacles slowed down my attack just enough to miss BV by single turn. My green Tiger won leader when desperate attacked bunker in the last game turn.

16. Operation Zitadelle

Before battle sold 3,7 Flak and 10,5 leFH. Purchased 3,7 SPAD and 21 Nebelwerfer.

Again the battle wasn't hard from the beginning. My forces directed north in three columns, Totenkopf on the west, Das Reich on the east, and my core Leibstandarte in the center. First couple of turns were spent on defensive line on the rivers breaking, then action went faster. My units tried to support both flanks, where auxiliaries were worn after initial breakthrough. I was hoping for BV, as it looked quite possible considering distance to cover and weak enemy opposition at later stage.
Auxiliary Das Reich with some contingent detached from my core reached and surrounded northeastern VH one turn before BV limit, and it was obvious that objective must be taken during next turn. On opposite flank auxiliary Totenkopf was delayed, but the rest of my forces were close enough to prepare final attack on northeastern VH as well. Unfortunately some key units ran out of fuel, and one extra turn must be spent on resupplying them.
Just before last BV turn was started, unexpected and very strong Russian reinforcements appeared close to both final objectives, consisting bunch of tanks. They started to make havoc between units gathered on eastern side, surprising couple of arties in trucks. Luckily my core units were grouped on the left side of VH, when attack hit the right side of formation. Anyway, despite losses, that VH was taken in the last BV turn. Some Russian tanks appeared on the west flank as well, but didn't do any damage, as my units were stopped for resupplying and were not in direct neighborhood of VH yet. They were able to take position for final assault in the last BV turn, but nothing more. That VH was captured one turn later, so BV was missed again by single turn.
My 10,5cm hovitzer got Agr Man leader, so I probably will change it on some unit with organic movement, perhaps the same 21 Nebelwerfer as I purchased here, which makes it walking on 2 hexes and firing on 4.

17. Prochorovka

So, scared by DB, I made some serious preparations at HQ before the battle. Sold 21 Nebelwerfer. Purchased 10,5 leFH. Upgraded 40 Pioniere to new 43 version of it, 10,5 howitzer with AM leader to mortar (the same price, so must pay extra only for better transport), and finally StuGs to Nashorns (OS them max. to 15 sp by the way, hoping they become efficient killing/softening machines).

During first turn I retreated all possible units in NW area of the river, leaving VH behind the river defended by 8.8 FlaK only, but it was obvious that holding it is mission impossible for me. Retreated units reinforced Totenkopf defenders around the second VH and airfield in that area. I was hoping that units will able to survive and hold their positions. My core with Das Reich auxiliaries, located in southern area, did nothing but prepared defensive positions, as crazy Russian attack was expected.
Afterward Russians attacked furiously, with bunch of 15 sp T-34 tanks and 13 sp Guards and other infantry units. The battle odds quickly became disadvantageous in NW sector, where one VH was taken by Russians easily as was predicted, and the number of defenders have being reduced continuously unit by unit, so I was afraid that even second VH may be lost as well.
Luckily my core Leibstandarte with help of Das Reich performed very well, withstanding initial attack and even starting to advance gradually directing east. My new 15 sp Nashorn was able to take 9-10 points of 15 sp T-34 in single shot or even blow out some weaker 10 sp units like Grants, so I didn't regret my choice. When real progress was made in the center, enemy started to withdraw some tanks from NW sending them to the middle, hoping they may slow down my forces, but it was not possible. That way pressure on NW defenders was released, so they started to think about the lost VH recapturing.
All objectives were under my control two turns before the BV limit. One of my core infantry units was killed during operation, but it wasn't big price for BV in such intensive battle. 93 enemy units were killed, and this time my best performer was humble Pz IVG tanks which counted 14 kills, when Tiger scored only 10.

18. Zhitomir

Before the battle purchased one SS Pzgrenadiere and upgraded all SS Infanterie to Pzgrenadiere.

It was time demanding battle, as the map is big and objectives are spread to its farther edges. All areas were patrolled by groups of nasty T-34, so your advance must be directed carefully. I was forced to restart the battle after losing my Pioniere in the first attempt, when tried to push hardly hoping for good result after Prokhorovka. The second attempt was led deliberately (so means slowly), and I missed ordinary Victory by one turn, scoring TV only, but avoided core losses. One infantry unit gained new leader here.

19. Korsun Pocket

Before the battle upgraded some infantry transports to half-tracks and OSed arties and Nashorns.

This battle was extremely hard. There is nothing more than TV possible, as other victories limit went in the first turn.
The northern group of surrounded auxiliary units, which were generally under-strengthen, could only defend their VH's perimeter trying to survive. They succeed and that VH was still in my hand at the end of battle.
My core with auxiliaries started from the south. After slow advance two closer Russian VHs, one (SW) on the river bank, and another (SE) placed more to the east, were taken, but my front units were seriously weakened then. In general there is no prestige for repairs available, so each unit strength must be maintained carefully.
Just after that initial success the real hell started. Hordes of Russian armored units appeared on the whole front line width, making havoc among my worn forces, overrunning big amount of them in very first attack. The SE objective was immediately lost to Russians, and I was only able to withdraw as many units as possible, forming defensive line supported by arties, and trying to withstand furious attacks of enemy tanks and SPATs.
The SW placed VH was kept all the time, but situation was similar and all units were engaged in desperate defensive battle trying to hold the area. One of my core Pzgrenadiers was killed there.
After long time most of strong Russian units were finally dispatched and I tried to start advance again, but it was too late to avoid loss. The SE objective was re-captured but the distance to remaining two, more to the north, was too long to cover it inside the time limit.
In my opinion TV may be still possible here, but it's necessary to catch that ideal moment when to switch from defensive to aggressive mode again. I was missed it and in result was clearly (perhaps 3 or 4 turns) too slow.
The battle was very intensive, which is clearly visible from experience gained as well as from numbers of casualties taken. 45 units were killed on my side, and 78 on Russian's. One of my infantries got the AT leader.

20. Epsom Defence

Before the battle upgraded Tiger to King Tiger. Saved the rest of prestige for later. No reason to replace the lost unit here, as only green troops are purchasable and max. five units may be deployed anyway.

This was small scale battle with limited deployment. Only five core units were used: King Tiger, Pioniere, 2 arties and SPAD. Auxiliaries were presented in limited amount as well.
As the only task is to hold position here till TV limit, I placed my units around Villers Bocage VH and waited there till the end. Only arties and AD fired couple of shots, and tank made some short walk to kill allied foremost units in its range at the end.
Auxiliaries were mainly killed by enemy waves, and the second VH held to the end was that at the west edge of map. When finally reinforcement with evacuation hex appeared, I waited one more turn and took it exactly in the last turn to get TV.

21. Operation Charnwood

At HQ upgraded Pz IVG to Panther G.

Another strictly defensive battle against completely overwhelming allied forces. Only 6 units could be deployed, so I decided to use 3 infantries, 2 arties and AD, which supposed to be better for Caen city defending. I prepared defensive setup in both Caen VHs with my core units, adding two auxiliary arties and two infantries as well.
Auxiliaries behind the Oden River after couple of turns captured Evrecy VH and tried to hold it to the end, but the last defender was killed just one turn before TV limit came.
The rest of auxiliaries entrenched in positions around Caen didn't last long and were eliminated rather fast. Airfield VH was taken by enemy after couple of turns, and big amount of allied forces formed quickly tight ring around Caen, but luckily thanks to my strong artillery placed behind defenders I was able to withstand all offensive attempts and kept both Caen city VHs to the last TV turn, when reinforcements with evacuation hexes appeared. Unfortunately taking both evacuation hexes and holding Caen city VHs were not enough to score TV here, so I got Loss. My arty got nice DF leader during the battle.

Note:
I must say information given in scenario briefing is misleading, as it says hold your position and take evacuation hexes which appear at the end. No information is given, what to hold exactly, but as you can not defend everything, the more natural choice is to keep Caen city. After losing the battle I checked VHs settings and saw that Evrecy VH and airfield VH should be held by Axis, when two Caen city VHs don't matter at all. Now, after reading DB's AAR I see it was Technique's intention, but wasn't underlined in scenario briefing at all. I think Evrecy VH was possible to defend in my run with some sort of luck, but the airfield VH was mission impossible for sure with units I deployed (I see DB's tactic was closer to Technique's intention as he succeed to defend airfield with armored units giving up Caen).
The other thing with VHs setup which could be corrected is that evacuation hexes have been set as objectives for both sides (instead of Axis only), when are placed behind impassable river, so AI can not reach them in any case. That means the player can not loose the battle even if AI manage to capture all VHs on the west of the river, until the time limit passes.

22. Caen

At HQ only OSed arties, saving prestige for later. During the battle some resources were spent on repairs as well.

Another defensive battle where you hardly can avoid loss. I wasn't able to achieve nothing more.
Auxiliaries in southwestern area behind the Orne river fought bravely. They managed to take Evrecy VH quickly, but under massive Allied attack lost it couple of turns later. The VH was recaptured then for a while, but lost again permanently. The presence of enemy infantry and artillery was overwhelming. The second VH there was lost as well and all auxiliary forces which survived were pushed gradually to the east. I tried to evacuate as many units as possible to organize some defensive setup on the bridge, but it was almost impossible. Finally only one infantry unit and two howitzers passed that bridge forming small defensive group. The rest of brave auxiliaries died. Anyway, that bridge was held successfully by survivors to the end of battle.
Another operating areas were bridges in the middle of Caen and the line between the Orne river and east edge of map in the north. The attacks were furious there and continued almost without any break. Northernmost VH was captured by enemies rather fast. Even one of Caen VHs on my side of river, placed north, was taken for a while after entrenched defenders dispatching. Luckily I was able to organize some counterstrike and took it back. British waves which tried to force bridges were under heavy fire of my artillery positioned on the hills, so they were not able to do any serious damage to my defenders. The biggest problem was massive enemy artillery contingent firing on my positions, which forced me to spent some prestige on repairs to keep defenders strength on decent level.
Finally I managed to remove all enemy units on east river bank, recapturing northernmost VH as well. Perhaps 3 turns before TV limit I noted with my recon, that two enemy Caen VHs were defended only with entrenched infantries without bigger support, as most of Allied units were previously killed during furious attacks. Anyway, knowing that the battle is lost, as could not take back Evrecy, I decided avoid risk of attacking city with worn units, and sent only some tanks in fast patrol behind the river, which killed two spotted arties.

23. Wacht Am Rhein

I spent a lot of time before made decision how allocate my cash. Seeing all that snowy terrain I upgraded remaining infantry transports to half-tracks. The most important decision was upgrading my DF arty to Wurfrahmen, which was not easy to take (range shortening from 5 to 3 and ammo load reducing from 7 to 4, but good mobility and SA 24 was tempting to try).

Finally easier battle after long streak of recent struggles. Very straight plan, with 2 columns advance from the east to the west side of map. The northern group consisted of both tanks, Pioniere, one Pzgrenadiere and the most experienced OA arty. The rest went with the southern group. All VHs on the way were taken easily, with great help of 15 sp Wurfrahmen, which practically blown defenders out of the cities, despite their actual entrenchment level. The most important factor was the weather anyway. I took two last westernmost VHs in 13th turn, which gave me nice BV one turn before limit. During those 13 turns only one wasn't snowy, so fat American bomber which patrolled the battle area didn't attack at all and Thunderbolt fighter only once. That allowed me to win the battle without losing even single unit, despite the fact that some were at 1 sp at the end.

24. Gran Bridgehead

Before the battle upgraded best arty to Wespe and OSed Pioniere.

Limited deployment scenario, so I decided to send into action King Tiger, Pioniere and two Pzgrenadiere, SPAD and three arties (Wespe, Mortar and Wurffy). That was small scale breakthrough operation, which occurred to be very easy for my forces setup. Managed to get BV with two turns in spare. Got Kugelblitz proto, which will be sold surely.

25. The Balaton Offensive

Before the battle sold prototype, upgraded 10,5 leFH to Wespe and OSed Pioniere.

This was another simple and small scale scenario. I went through initial Russian defending lines quickly and rolled over the map in southern direction with full speed. All three SE objectives were captured before turn 10 passed. The last remaining objective placed SW must wait one turn longer. Unfortunately one Nashorn was killed next to it by attack of two 20 sp infantries. At the beginning of turn 11 a lot of nasty Russian reinforcements appeared, but it didn't matter as the last VH was taken promptly, so those units didn't participate in the battle at all. Got BV one turn before limit.
So, the challenge is completed now. The start and ending went quite nicely, but the middle part of it was full of struggling. I'm glad I was able to finish it before New Year. Many thanks to all friends for support , especially for DB, which provided great intel reports for me.
