Gospodin Polkovnik, welcome to Korea. Following the breakdown of negotiations, the Japanese Empire has declared war and has begun preparations for landing her army in Korea. The Russian Empire's sphere of influence in the region rests on Port Arthur: a fortress on the western coast of northern Korea. It will be the aim of Japan's army to capture this fortress and expell our presence from the region.

The Japanese 1st Army landed on the western coast of northern Korea with the aim of isolating and besieging Port Arthur. The Yalu River is our first line of defense. Your regiment will be part of General Zasulich's force of 6 Siberian regiments and a Cossack squadron. Your task is to fight a delaying action. You will be reinforced by units posessing a new weapon: the machine gun. Perhaps you can utilize this device to your advantage on the battlefield.

A note about unit scale: during the Russo-Japanese War, you will be able to purchase units of 7 strength. The scale itself will vary from batallion to regiment. In 1914 you will be able to purchase full-strength units.

Gospodin Polkovnik, After crossing the Yalu, the Japanese are unloading two more armies from their transports: each army landing successively closer to Port Arthur.

The Russian command resolved to prepare Port Arthur for a siege and to relieve the encirclement the following winter with an army being transported by railroad across Siberia. You will participate in the last rearguard action before the ring closes around Port Arthur here at Nanshan. Use flexible defensive tactics around the prepared defensive positions you have at your disposal.

Note: it is not possible to win this scenario. Strategically, no victory at the tactical level can prevent the siege.

Gospodin General-Major, you will take part in General Kuropatkin's attempt to break the siege of Port Arthur. Fresh troops are arriving by rail through Siberia.

The first stage of our offensive on the Shakhe River will be a flank action by the Dembovsky recon group, followed by the engagement of the whole of the Western Group (Bilderling) against the Japanese 2nd Army (Oyama).

Note: the unit scale has switched to regimental scale, so you are now in command of a division. A 7-str unit in PG2 is equivalent to 1 regiment.

OK, so far this is all not to my liking, but I will try to bring it to a good end somehow.

HQ: I would like to upgrade my ATY to a Range-3 model, but it lacks prestige. Alternatively, I could upgrade an INF. In between I bought two units to secure a VH. But I don't really want to play with 7/7 units, they are completely powerless :doh .

Gospodin General-Major, having made contact with Japanese forces, the bulk of our army continues south toward the town of Lyaoyan.

The Japanese are attempting to regain the initiative and are advancing forward, intentsifying the battle in the center. General Kuropatkin plans to outflank the advancing Japanese with the 1st Siberian Cossack Division (Samsonov) and the Zabaikal Cossack Division (Rennenkampf). You are advised to maintain a defensive stance in the center, while strengthening your left (south-east) flank to assist Samsonov and Rennenkampf.

Do not plan on receiving many reinforcements for this battle: Kuropatkin has refused to commit all of his troops, fearing a sudden break-through by the Japanese against one of his flanks.

Gospodin General-Major, August of 1914 brings the nations of Europe into a great conflict. You must choose which campaign you would like to take part in for the duration of 1914.

Victory: East Prussia. You will take part in the battles of the 1st Army as you attempt to invade East Prussia with the aim of capturing Koenigsberg and opening the way into Germany. The front-line troops have been mobilized more rapidly than anticipated by the enemy, and the Russian Steamroller can be unleashed to honor our alliance with France.

Tactical Victory: Galicia. Preserving our Slavic bond with Serbia, our armies will defend the frontier against an Austro-Hungarian aggression on the South-Western Front. "Slavic bond" just noticed it in text you quoted... more likely it was "Eastern othodox bond" (religion) than Slavic ; while it was usual "leitmotiv" in those days would be funny if would there be "Slavic bond" if Serbs were by pure historical chance (and in one period of history it wasn't far from possibility) catholics... ;) more "orthodox bond" like it was case with Bulgaria in times when Russia supported big "Bulgaria on 2 seas" (Sanstefano) in XIX c etc. than "Slavic bond". (Poles and Ukrainians are 2 most Slavic nations/tribes genetically and maybe linguistically, btw)

funny they did not have DNA tests then, would be surprised to know that "Slavic bond" was actually very weak and fewer than non-Slavic Hungary or Romanian lands among south Slavic nations :lol Not so important but it was something funny to say. Did not play camp but i believe it was texts by Toliy (Russian living across the Atlantic, iirc) so he used proper term used in Russia of the times but funny in genetic way today... have fun Para as ever with game, just put it btw for fun in today perspective when we know DNA structure also, but yes in XIX c they talked about it a lot I guess... :)

Gospodin General-Major, your division is now part of the VIII Corps, 8th Army (Brusilov). The opening engagement of the war with Austria-Hungary had occured at the Zlota Lipa river, where the Austrian 3rd Army (Brudermann) has been repulsed. The Austrian armies have launched an offensive along the entire frontier, and their center 4th Army has gained some ground. Generals Ruzsky (3rd) and Brusilov (8th) hope to collapse the Austrian right flank and threaten their center.

You will participate in the counterattack with the objective of forcing the Gnila Lipa river and opening the way to capture the Austrian fortress of Lemberg. The Kiev military district is designated as the primary mobilization district, and you can plan on receiving ample reinforcements for this battle. You should also be aware that the Austrians have begun redeploying one of their Balkan armies (2nd) to assist in their offensive.
HQ: I improved the INF slightly, bought a tank (cavalry) and a SPATY :lol . The prestige cap is close.

The battle: ... is tough again. Many turns it goes through mountains and all units advance only one hex. The tsar sends reinforcements several turns in a row, but many do not reach the battle line (too slow). A lot of patience is necessary ... :phew

Gospodin General-Major, the Austrian 4th Army - in the center of the enemy's advance into Galicia - has captured the town of Komarov and is threatening to break through toward Kowel, a vital railroad junction. Having eliminated the Austrian threat on our southern flank, Brusilov (8th Army) is pushing toward the Carpathian mountains. This development places the Austrians here at Komarov in a vulnerable position: their flanks are nearly exposed.

Our 5th Army (Pleve), having regrouped after the inital setbacks, is ready to check the enemy advance. You must recapture the lost ground and seize the initiative! Your division will be deployed with the XXI Corps of the 5th Army.
HQ: I improved the Recon and gave the free core ATY OS. With the remaining prestige I commandeered a cavalry.

Gospodin General-Major, as the Galician battle of maneuver unfolded, the Austrian 4th Army found itself in a corner. With our 5th Army (V,XVII, and XII Corps) marching through Tomashov, the threat concentrated to the north. Our 3rd Army (XI, IX, and X) began preparations for an attack from the east against the town of Rava Russka.

It appears that the Austrians are cut off from their neighbors with only a line of communication to the rear. They are attempting to concentrate their forces against one flank and then the other. You must press on with exhausted troops to foil the Austrian maneuver. Expect the arrival of the 3rd Army to assault Rava Russka within days.
HQ: the prestige cap is very close. That's why I upgraded the free ATY to a more powerful cannon. From the remaining prestige, I first bought an AT. After a restart I decided to buy a third ATY instead of the AT.

The battle: ... was OK. There are enough clearances to bypass enemy positions with cavalry and attack the enemy ATY in the rear.
The trailing reinforcements can capture the VH in the south without help, but with heavy losses.

Gospodin General-Major, following our swift action at Rava Russka, the Austro-Hungarian armies in Galicia face utter collapse. Pursued by our cavalry, Austrian forces abandoned one of their key fortifications at Lemberg. The retreat has turned into a rout. Now the Austrians hope to hold their right wing at the great fortress of Przemysl. With its ring of modernized fortifications and fielding the mighty 305mm Skoda howitzers, the fortress presents a formidable defensive position.

Three armies are converging on Przemysl: the 5th from the north, the 3rd from the east, and the 8th from the south. Our troops have exhausted themselves, and the supply lines have grown thin. Our objectives are to first place a cavalry screen around the city and then to completely encircle the fortress, preparing it for a prolonged siege.

Your orders are to capture the objectives around the city. A Brilliant Victory here will allow you to replace your troops for second-line siege troops and to participate in the winter campaign. Should you choose to conquer Przemysl outright, substantial prestige will be awarded to you from captured stock, but your forces will be given rest during winter.
HQ: I improved the weak proto-INF from the last scenario (and then forgot to deploy :doh ) and bought a second SPATY.

The battle: ... very difficult. I started twice because I advised the wrong targets in the first attempt. There are no VH's in Przemysl, just lots of flags with lots of prestige. But I didn't get that far because there were already quadruple stacked defenders waiting for me at the edge of the city and didn't let myself pass.

The VH's in the north, center and south are easily reachable in the turn limit. I had much more difficulties with the VH's in the west and south-west. Here only a few aux units are available. I had already conquered the western VH, secured it and marched on, when it was overrun by the enemy a few turns before BV and my defenders were destroyed. Only with a bit of luck I could lead two of my own units to attack there in the last turn and recapture the VH.

Gospodin General-Major, after a period of rest, your troops are once again ready to fight on the Austro-Hungarian front. Following the unsuccessful October-November offensives by the Germans (Lodz) and the Austrians (to relieve Przemysl), our South-Western Front resumed its offensive with the goal of capturing Krakau and launching an offensive into Silesia.

Our 3rd Army under Radko Dmitriev launched the offensive but was not able to break the front of the Austrian 4th Army (Archduke Josef Fredinand). Stavka has resolved to pull the Carpathian Corps from Brusilov's 8th Army to achive a breakthrough at Limanowa.

The battle: ... the BV was out of reach for me. Many turns passed, during which my units could only defend themselves because the AI attacked vehemently with many strong units. Most of the VH's could be held, but Zakopane in the south-west had to be captured by me, which I did not succeed in the BV limit.

WWI: 1915 Campaign Path Choice

Gospodin General-Leitenant, please accept the congratulations on your promotion. Your command has increased to an Army Corps: you should receive sufficient resources to requisition troops once operations for 1915 commense.

Brilliant Victory: Should you choose a Brilliant Victory in this choice scenario, you will command your corps on the North-Western Front. Stavka has begun drafting plans for a winter offensive from the Polish Salient into Eastern Prussia.

Victory: Taking a Victory here will lead your corps into the South-Western Front for Galician operations. The Winter Battle of the Carpathians has already begun, and your corps will join this action as soon as possible.

Tactical Victory: Tactical Victory in this scenario will transferr your troops to the Caucasus Front to join operations against Turkey. [currently only 1 scenario is complete for this path].

Gospodin General-Leitenant, the situation on the North-Western Front is becoming critical! It appears that Stavka's offensive plans may be abandoned: following the defeat of our 2nd Army at Tannenberg, the German 8th and the newly formed 10th Armies have begun the campaign to recapture lost territory in Prussia and Masuria.

The Germans have captured the initiative and have forced our 10th Army to slowly retreat through the Augustow Forest. This has created a dangerous gap of 50 km on the north flank. Von Hindenburg, sensing another opportunity to encircle large numbers of our forces, has rushed the XXXVIII and XXXIX Reserve Corps to exploit the gap.

It appears that the XL Reserve Corps from the 8th Army was sent along the Bobr River to meet the forward elements of the 10th with the goal of trapping the majority of the 10th (III, XX, and III Siberian Corps) in a cauldron. You will be deployed as the XX Corps, charged with the task of holding the German onlaught in the Augustow Forest. The fortress of Osowiec will serve as the hinge of your left flank.

Gospodin General-Leitenant, do not allow another Tannenberg to be repeated!
HQ: I bought two INF and one ATY.

The battle: ... was the first against the forces of the German Empire and I had a lot of respect for it.
In the north, I deployed a lot of ATY and was able to quickly gain an advantage here and capture the VH. On all other front sections I defended with heavy losses and tactical retreats.
I repaired two core INF. It was exciting to the end, well balanced.

Now it would finally be time for more leaders :irate

Gospodin General-Leitenant, following the Augustow offensive, the Germans continue to press our positions along the North-Western Front. Stavka has begun forming a new 12th Army (Pleve), which will now be employed defensively by the front. The 1st Army (Litvinov) is in the midst of launching a supporting local offensive to relieve the situation around Warsaw on his left flank.

The German Army Group Gallwitz has attacked Litvinov's right flank at Przasnysz and have defeated the 63rd division, while pushing back the right flank of the I Turkestan Corps (Scheideman). Without throwing the Germans back to their positions at Mlawa, we have no hope of maintaining this flank of the whole Polish Salient.

North-Western Front (Ruszky) has directed the I and II Siberian Corps to attack the city from eastern and southern directions. The front must hold, Gospodin General-Leitenant!
HQ: I bought my third tank, an AT and an ATY.

The battle: although the AI is aggressively set, the first turns went calmly and without problems. Only cavalry reinforcements from NW attacked in the middle of the scenario to prevent the capture of the central VH. Two VH's were defended by stacked units.

Your corps has been called in to capture both German lines of trenches in the vicinity of the town of Jednorozec, just NE of Przasnysz.
HQ: I bought a Recon. New units have 50exp.

The battle: The AI is less aggressive than expected. Again, there are stacked units in most VH's. Conquest is difficult and lossy. Also the weather is against me - it rains many turns and I cannot use my air superiority effectively - only spy and prevent resupply.

Libau Raid May (7) 20, 1915

Gospodin General-Leitenant, the focus of this war has shifted to the Eastern Front. On May 1st, Germano-Austrian forces have broken through at Gorlice and Tarnow, dismantling our line of denfese within days and breaching the front. The South-Western Front is desperately trying to stop the offensive by vicious counter-attacks against the Central Powers' spearhead.

Due to our actions at Przasnyz, the German plans for a coordinated spring offensive against the North-Western Front have been denied. Having spent the strength of their divisions on the fighting, the German northern group of armies cannot undertake a strategic offensive without reinforcements from the West. In the meanwhile, the German navy has assisted the German I Cavalry Corps in a raid against the Lithuanian port of Libau (Liepaja). The port commander has over-reacted and ordered a full retreat in haste.

You must mobilize whatever mobile forces you can and perform a mission of utmost importance: large quantities of supplies for the Baltic Fleet and our ground armies have been left at Libau and must be destroyed before they fall into German hands. A small group of your forces can be deployed, and they must destroy any ONE of the supply stocks and temporarily recapture its location.
HQ: during the scenario I bought a fighter/bomber (the two Farman MF.11 can't do AA). Aircraft have Range-4 in this Efile!

The battle: ... tricky (eight own units can be used). In my first attempt, I used the wrong strategy. I tried to use the only Russian VH (Grobina), which did not fall into the hands of the Imperial German troops in the first turns, as a starting point for my counterattack. But the Germans surrounded it and I successfully defended until turn 16 without getting the chance to counterattack. That's when I broke off and restarted.

In the second attempt, the focus was again on defending Grobina, but I saved three aux units from the landing German troops, hid them, and waited until all the Germans had moved on toward Grobina. With the help of the bombers and the three aux units, I was then able to recapture Libau. I had already destroyed one of the Suppley Stocks.

Gospodin General-Leitenant, having received reinforcements from the West, the German northern group of armies have joined the massive offensive against us. The German summer offensive in Poland has focused on trapping our forces in the Polish cauldron: the heaviest blow has fallen on the Przasnysz-Novogeorgievsk front. You must take control of the situation and delay the German advance so that our supply and communication lines can retreat from Warsaw!

Amassing artillery, the Germans have destroyed railways and our trench lines. As you retreat into the fortress of Novogeorgievsk, you should gather the rail-transported supplies and use them to increase the fighting capabilities of your troops. As soon as you receive the evacuation order, you can begin the retreat with your troops in rear-guard, but you must hold the Novogeorgievsk fortress in its entirety!
HQ: I sold the Morane-Saulnier L, then bought the same model again - with 50 exp.

The battle: ... a real cauldron battle. Theoretically you can end the scenario via an escape hex in the first turn, but that's not the point. So I put my units, as far as possible, in the front line and tried to resist the German attack.
In the south-west I could concentrate some strong units and push back the attack. At all other front sections I had to retreat step by step and leave many VH's to the overpowering enemy.

Very well designed scenario, like the campaign as a whole so far.

Gospodin General-Leitenant, with all hopes of retaining Poland disappearing, the North-Western Front is fighting rear-guard action as the armies retreat eastward. Here at Panevezys we must delay the German attack while our forces take positions in the Kowno and Wilna fortresses.

The production of armored trains has visibly increased since their introduction in the fall of 1914, with 15 operational detachments from Finland to Galicia. With action around major railroad hubs, you may consider the deployment of armored trains a viable option for the remainder of the campaign in 1915.
HQ: no activities.

The battle: ... was again an excellent defensive scenario. All VH's could be defended for 8 turns with great efforts. Then the Imperial Germans ran out of steam and I was able to counterattack.
My total air superiority was very helpful. However, the player must watch out for enemy AT-MG's with flak-function.

Kovno, Aug (8) 21, 1915

Gospodin General-Leitenant, the German Niemen Offensive against the northern wing of NW Front (5th and 10th Armies) has attained rapid success, and our positions at Kovno are threatened from the flanks. Front command has chosen to abandon the city and to retreat to Wilna, where the Germans must be stopped.

German cavalry has occupied Kovno on the heels of our retreating troops, and the I Landwehr Corps has crossed the Niemen in the region of Alytus. You must destabilize the German offensive here by striking at your objectives quickly. We cannot hold the attackers along the Niemen, but we can distrupt the German plan of an assault on Wilna by forcing the deployment of their second echelon against us here at Kovno.

The manpower and ammunition shortage has become a problem of critical proportions: none of the divisions on NW Front are at full strength of 12,000 rifles. The 2nd Finnish counts a mere 6571, and the 104th 2582 - the size of just one pre-war regiment!
HQ: I bought one tank each, an AT and an ATY. They have 50exp.

The Battle: After a short and fierce German attack, I was able to quickly take the initiative and successfully launch the counterattack. After i gaining some ground, the Germans received cavalry reinforcements and the situation escalated briefly. Thanks to continued air superiority, I was able to intervene in a regulating manner at these hot spots.

Wilna, Sept 13, 1915

Gospodin General-Leitenant, the German VI Cavalry and XXI Army Corps have poured into a breach between our 10th and 5th Armies to the north of Wilna and are threatening to envelop the bulk of the 10th Army! You must stop this maneuver and hold Wilna. The forces under your command include the elite Guard Corps and the I Cavalry Corps. General Smirnov (2nd Army) has sent the XXXVI Corps to your aid as well.

While the numbers of experienced troops - formed before the war - diminishes daily at an alarming rate, the fresh 2nd and 3rd line divisions lack sufficient training to be as dependable in the field. The ammunition shortage has compounded the problem. Only your skillful leadership can hold the front together, Gospodin General!
HQ: I bought a TB.

The battle: ... was extremely exciting until the end. Again, an excellent defense scenario that demands the utmost concentration. Despite great efforts, I had to abandon Vilnius in the middle of the scenario - the enemy pressure was too great and the danger of losing core units as well. With a lot of skill I managed to keep one VH on the map at all times in order not to lose the scenario. All VHs were fought for fiercely.
I believe that my air superiority was the deciding factor in the victory.

Narotch, Sept 26, 1915

Gospodin General-Leitenant, having penetrated deep into our territory the enemy can finally be stopped. After capturing Wilna, the German VI (Brecht) and III (von Frommel) Cavalry Corps launched into the widening gap between the 10th (Radkevich) and 5th (Pleve) Armies. However, with the length of our front shortening, the 2nd Army (Smirnov) maneuvered behind the 10th to counter the German advance east of Lake Narotch. In an effort to coordinate the efforts of cavalry from both 5th and 10th Armies, a single cavalry army was formed during the battle under General Kozakov, which included the I and Svodny Cavalry corps, several cavalry divisions, and the elite Guard Cavalry division.

You must neutralize all German cavalry rear-guards and drive toward Lake Narotch. German engineers have begun building a trench system to hold onto their gains. You must capture these trenches in an effort to enable a counter-stroke against the German 10th Army. Time is of essense here: as the front solidifies along lines of entrenchment, our chances of a rapid counter-attack diminish.
HQ: during the scenario I bought a TB but forgot to set it up :o .

The battle: ... similar to the previous scenarios, but this time I have to attack. This is sometimes harder than building a good defense.
Turn by turn I get low reinforcements again. It takes some getting used to that she always starts with less ammo than the default is. By the way, this is true for almost all aux units in every scenario.

At the end of the scenario I was surprised that the campaign was suddenly over. I had expected it to play out to 1917. Strange :huh .

Gospodin General-Leitenant, so ends the year of 1915 on our North-Western Front. The Front has failed to accomplish any strategic offensive plans and has stablized along a line deep within our territory. The massive Germano-Austrian offensive during the second half of the year has shattered morale but failed to rout us. Your participation in the action in North Poland during our retreat has played a major role in delaying the German advance: from Novogeorgievsk to Narotch you stood between German staff expectations and reality. The massive cavalry engagement at Narotch may well be the last we have seen in this war. The elan of our Guard Cavalry Division will resonate through German divisional histories, but at a heavy price..

The Army has regrouped and re-equipped. Our Prussian enemy has been cornered into a two-front war of attrition on a massive scale. The year of 1916 will see a more co-ordinated effort by the Entente to bring this war to an end.
