I chose a different composition of my army than everyone can see at Darek - the INF not so strong (no pioneers), but more units across all unit types. The BV was also out of reach for me, but all units could gain a lot of experience.

4 Battle for Nanchang ltbv

I know that a tough battle awaits me here.
In the first turns I try to clear the western bank of the enemy, who outnumber me and can use their air force. Some of my units have significant losses and I feel anxious thinking about the upcoming street fight in Nanchang, which will claim high casualties.
Fortunately, I receive a lot of long-range ATY reinforcements during the scenario. With it, I can lay siege to nanchang. The last move to BV involved a lot of luck.

This scenario is unfortunate designed. In turns 1 and 2, the AI has it in its own hands to end the campaign in its favor.
The Japanese aux units defending the VH's are weak and will be destroyed. It took me 3 tries until one of these units resisted the attacks and gave me the opportunity to capture a VH in the center of the map with my core units to continue the scenario/campaign.
The rest of the battle was not that difficult and the Chinese partisans were eliminated without any problems. It is important to secure the VH's as well, because you don't know if there are still partisans hiding nearby, waiting for a good opportunity to recapture them.

limited deployment again. No air transport is available, so my paratroopers don't get a mission. The enemy is weak and easy to push out of the VH's in the center of the map. Annoying - the long distances to the VH's in the south and many turns without contact with the enemy.

again limited deployment - eight units are possible, the [P] units cannot be deployed over the ocean. So it is best to have only fast units, so that the VH's in the south-west can be reached in the BV limit.

In the meantime, I ask myself whether investing in a wide range of different units in this campaign makes any sense at all :huh .

As I see in my old AAR - probably not. :lol My army composition was very narrow, without use of recons and any kind of guns. :dunno Looks strange, but it worked well. Here, with limited deployment, quality usually is more handy than quantity.
I see you chose different path, but now looks like we are aligned again.

12 Battle of the Tenaru tv (v+1)

again limited lineup - only five units are possible.
I abandoned the first attempt in the middle of the scenario after losing my HQ unit.
Before the second attempt I sold the INF proto and the AT. I invested the prestige in a TB with high NA to fight better against the pesky US Navy.
The scenario gives me the impression that a BV is not planned by the designer. The defenders of the VH's have OS and are heavily entrenched. The terrain is not suitable for fast movement and the USAF is very numerous. Japanese reinforcements do not arrive until the last BV turn. Only with them is it possible to conquer the VH's.

At HQ I upgraded my fighter to a current model.

The USMC is strong - experience over 500 and full OS. Plus many ships with long-range guns.
Most VH's are lost in the first turns. But at least one VH must be held, otherwise the campaign is lost.
In the first attempt I defended the VH in the mountains in the center of the island. After some losses of core units I gave up this attempt and started a second one. This time I concentrated my defense on the southern airfield - that was the better idea. By the time the attackers got near it, I had already sunk a lot of warships and USMC in NT with my two planes or damaged them so badly that they were no longer a threat.

The result is not reproducible. In the first attempt I took back a lost VH, but nothing happened.
In the second attempt, I lost a Teishan Dan and recaptured a small flag near the volcano in the same turn - and suddenly I had a brilliant victory. Because I didn't want to lose the paratrooper I repeated the turn, saved the paratrooper, took the small flag again and - nothing! no BV! I captured a second flag, this time a real VH - nothing! no BV! Sorry, but I don't understand these arbitrary victory conditions.

That happens when one of the sides, player or AI does not control a VH but the victory conditions is to capture VHs.
So if one side does not have control of at least one VH the other side can easily win by taking any flagged hex (any flag, not only VH).
This problems occurs in several old campaigns, because, as far as i know, it was possible to have this scenario setting in PG2 but not in OG!
The easiest way to fix this, is, to assign a VH too both sides.

(In OG with have the victory condition "hold numbers of VHs at end of scenario..." where one side does not have to have control of a VH at scenario start.)

17 Okinawa loss

I don't see any possibility of a win here.

After immediately losing several core units in a first attempt fighting American Shermans with OS, I upgraded both tanks to Range-2 models (comparable to German Panzer IV). These are the only units that can stand up to the USMC.
The US Navy has 30 warships that continuously pound on my positions and damage each of my units. By the end of the scenario, I was able to destroy 22. But I didn't dare counterattack the VH's, which were defended by naval IF with leaders and lots of OS and entrenchment - I just wanted to reach the next (last) scenario.

:eek You are playing Defending the Nippon instead of Japanese Blitzkrieg now. I have never seen these battles.
:-? You should probably try to fight stubbornly for BV in "Battle of the Tenaru", which I found fairly doable in my PG2 run (it is not mission impossible for sure - but the battle may be harder when played with OG). Then you could continue on winning path invading USA. :)

:howdy Darek, thanks for your interest.
I've never played the campaign, so I don't know the different paths. Everything is new to me, even though the campaign is very old.
With the demise of JP's, all the old AAR's have been lost as well, and no player can take their cue from those experiences. For a newbie this is very bitter and even I, who has played many campaigns in the meantime, can hardly compensate for the peculiarities of this campaign.
In the Scroll of Honor there is only one player listed so far who played this campaign with OG - Csaba with 50% ...

I tested the last scenario yesterday (without using my core units). It is an incredible monster. The victory conditions are as follows:
BV: 22 turns
V: 26 turns
TV: 35 turns
The USMC has experience from 500 to 1000 and OS from 12/8 to 15/8. The Japanese defenders have 0 to 200 experience and very little ATY support and were usually completely destroyed after 1 to 3 attacks without the Americans taking any appreciable damage. After 9 turns the Americans had captured all VH's without losing a single unit. In total they have 99 units:

18 Ketsu-Go - The battle for Tokyo tv

So, somehow I managed and ended the scenario with a TV.

I have given up all efforts to prevent the USMC from landing. Instead, I directed all useful units (tanks, ATY) that had fast transport to the VH's of Funabashi and Chiba (northeast of Tokyo Bay). There they united with my core units and defended their position for 20 turns. Then the enemy was weakened enough for me to carefully launch a counterattack. Now I had to recapture the entire map. Each VH was defended by one or more units with OS. In the southeast, the entire US Navy was also waiting, which fired at me during my march to the VH's and inflicted damage.
Fortunately, I had gained air superiority during the scenario and my air force was intact to the extent that my air attacks on the Americans were successful to the end.

Congratulations :yes The second part of your run was real monster. :phew
Comparing to my run, at some point you got derailed from the main path and the consequence was heavy punishment.
It was a real surprise to me, as I remember this CC as walk in the park with most of BVs. You have discovered the other (scary) face of this campaign.
