Benefit of experience points beyond 500

Post by KAASKOP »

Is there any benefit to having a unit accumulate beyond experience level of 500? Overstrengthening is capped at +5 (total of 15 if base strength is 10). If I inspect core units in OpenSuite, some accumulate an enormous amount of 1500 to 2000+ experience points when playing a medium to long campaign.

Does a unit with experience of 2000 perform better than a unit with 500?

No, experience level doesn't matter actually, only bars matter.

There is an option to cap experience in the E-File's "equip.cfg", and that value can be customized in a specific campaign's "campaign.cfg".
Now about when exactly to cap experience ("exp_unit_cap=x")?
There is that option to lose some experience when changing the unit's equipment (to simulate the fact they aren't used to that new equipment): "upgrade_exp=y". So, unless you set that loss to 0, if you cap XP to 500, an elite unit which has been upgraded will immediately cease to be elite. If you cap XP to 600, it will stay elite, unless you change their equipment again. And if you cap it at 1000 or more, you can upgrade them each and every scenario, they will remain elite...

For the record, in my E-File XP is capped to 600, I postulate that an old elite unit is experienced enough to manage some new equipment every now and then. Upgrade loss in my E-File is 15% ("upgrade_exp=85"), so after upgrading, an old elite unit will have 510 XP. Meaning you can't upgrade them again in the next scenario without them losing their elite status.
