To get back to business: As I said further up, I noticed healing units don't work anymore. But it's even more complicated: Healing unit do work just fine on old campaigns, but on the one I just created yesterday it doesn't.

Here is a test scenario.
It's a tiny map with 2 damaged infantry units, and a hospital which should heal them 4 points/round, but it doesn't. At least not on my version (Pretends to be 0.93.5.0, July 22).

What gives? :huh

:doh It doesn't have any ammo? Oh my. Yes, at some point I must have thought hospitals don't really need ammo... :doh

Thank you, you saved my day! I'm off finishing that scenario...

Not really a bug, and I can see the rationale behind it*, but it's really annoying when a towed heavy artillery gets a "Reconnaissance Movement : Phased Movement" leader... :doh

It's already sad there are only 15 leaders** for a ~100 units core army, but at least each of them should be really useful.

* I guess self-propelled artillery could use this, although artillery isn't really into movement, isn't it: They just move into range, that's about all they need to do. :dunno

** OG has outgrown its ancestor. With huge maps and the corresponding big armies (no way you can handle an XXL map with 20 units!) those limits should be increased correspondingly. What was plentiful for 1997 PGII is not nearly enough for 2023 OG (yes, this is officially a plea for increasing limits. Yes, I know, development has apparently ended, but one can still hope, no?...).

--Edited to add:

Tried again, this time it got a "Combat Support : Lends exp. bars to adjacent friendly units". Hardly better... :(

It's one of the best leaders for a towed artillery unit imo :dunno Combat support is also very good. I'd take both :cool

:fused
Care to explain? Especially the recon movement for heavy mortars?

--Edited to add (because I'm impatient, as always...):
I guess to cater for all tastes the best solution might be letting the user pick, if not from the whole list of possibilities (else most people would always pick the same 2-3), but at least from 3-4 choices. So randowe can have his walking mortar and I can avoid it... :winkgrin
(Still want to know why recon movement is such a good choice for heavy artillery though)

The artillery can embark, move, disembark and fire in the same turn (when it has a transport with some movement points).

If the associated transport has a lot of movement (SdKfz. 251, for example, has 7 hex), then this is the ideal combination to combine movement and long-range firing or ammunition supply.
Under PG this combination did not work, but under OG I appreciate it very much, like randowe.

I see. But that is even worse! I'm thinking about some artillery pieces which took a whole day to set up (for instance the Gamma howitzer (Kurze Marine-Kanone 12 L/16))... If I could I would configure them so that after moving they would need 3-4 turns before being able to fire! (Yes, I know, players would hate me...)

or ammunition supply.
In my campaigns this is solved by using supply trucks, so no need to have action points left, just park a supply truck nearby (essential for that kind of artillery).

But we're going OT.
As I said in my edit further up, the best solution would be to give the player a choice between a couple options.
Or to have so many leaders, a couple useless (for you) don't matter more than that. (Nudge nudge, wink wink!...) :winkgrin

It doesent work because it didnt find a map.

The problem already existed last year. Please see if you can find a solution in this thread.

:(

The "sub_ex=1" option apparently doesn't work anymore (don't know since when): Apparently now recons can spot (classic, single-unit) submarines even if those recons do not have the ASW special.

Here is a test scenario (just drop into my old EFile Scenario folder).
IIRC the Do 215 recon plane should not see the enemy submarines, the He 115 recon seaplane should (there are several subs around). The map is big because I first used it to test Radar units (that's how I spotted the problem, radar was seeing submarines!... :doh).

Sorry for missing this issue :doh

I've tested the scenario and found that there are no subs submerged, so they can be spotted by any unit either naval or air.
sub_ex:0..1 Extended rules for submarines (are hidden while submerged and can be spotted only by DD,TB or units with ASW special)

And everything works when you submerge them?
(It's been a while so I don't remember exactly what and how it went (and I don't have access to OG right now), but it is well possible I had a :doh moment. Getting old...)
Sorry...

Hope so, but I had no time to check in game, I just looked into code with a text editor as I am at bed fighting the nasty flu I am hosting :(

Do not worry it happens the same to me ;) actually I do not remember exactly how submarines can change between submerged/surfaced :huh

Hello

During my few days of OG adventure in two different campaigns (blitz from efile_pg2 and blitz from efile_atomic) I had multiple crashes during AI turn. Here's some info I managed to gather (prepared immediately after last application freeze, I had to kill the application): https://drive.google.com/file/d/1-hVs2r ... sp=sharing

Hopefully it's at least slightly helpful.

After reloading the game can be continued.

The freezes mentioned in previous post are everyday thing for me. This crash is something else and new, it happened only once during AI turn:

That windows report doesn't help, sorry.

The best method to find and eventually fig, any bug in AI is to send the files suggested by the Report Bug tool (Ctrl+B) adding any comment you can have noticed before crashing.

Do not forget to add your nickname in the mail and your one email to answer if you want a private answer.

Thanks, I didn't know about the report bug tool. I'll try (as I got another crash few minutes ago).

I'll try to attach it next time.
But I'm afraid it won't help - you won't replicate the issue using this save (in both cases I'm reporting - freeze and a crash); it cannot be repeated using the last save (otherwise I would be stuck with repetitive freeze or crash scenario, which is not the case) - after I reload and use this save (which is the autosave before AI turn), the game continues.

I was experimenting in various ways trying to work around the freeze during AI turn which I see everyday. Wondering if it is something about threads I changed the affinity to 1 "cpu" for OG, as dumb as the idea could look - didn't help. I also tried to run it in various compatibility modes - didn't help.

My system is otherwise rock solid, but maybe it's too "new", leading to some kind of a hard to debug exotic issue in OG.
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D
Motherboard: ROG Crosshair VIII Dark Hero
System: Windows 10
GPU: Geforce RTX 4080

Btw. I changed some OG screen settings, like refresh rate (to 10), and all the movement speeds to slowest. I also run in 1920x1080 using integer scaling (as the monitor is 4k).

The ai_turn.log file you sent me is complete, so it didn't hanged during ai turn

Code: Select all

---------------- End Turn ---------------------
...Start and set up: 0 ... 0 secs
...Recons and guns : 1 ... 1 secs
...Moving units M1 : 1 ... 2 secs
...Purchase/deploy.: 0 ... 2 secs
...Moving units M2 : 4 ... 6 secs total

---------------- Ending ai thread------------------
...Cleaning AI data
...Removing AI-Mode
...Saving working log:ai_turn.log as: D:\Gry\Open General\efile_atomic\OPENLOG\ai_p2_turn18.log
...Returning from ThreadProc(): AI status=ST_AI_ENDOFTURN
So it is more difficult to know where/why if hangs
Anyway it would be good if you could save in a "before_bug.xcsv" save game, at the end of player turn (not the autosave), so if the ai hangs I could have a look step by step the full ai_turn and its after-ai-actions in order to replicate and caught.

I'm sorry, I sent the bug reports forgetting that I disabled the debug logs a day ago (to check if this impacts the problem)... :bonk
Also I didn't think logically in my previous message, as I cannot repeat the issue after reloading as the AI turn is different, steps are different - but having the logs maybe you can repeat same steps as you said and this eventually will lead to the same issue.

There is a shadow of hope in my heart! :)

I finally managed to send a proper report from OG with the freeze issue, save before turn end and all the logs. I hope it's helpful.

BTW. on 2024-01-27 18:04, Saturday, I sent my first logs for this freeze issue here on forum in this thread - can be helpful for comparison (although there's no save in this old zip). Here are the old logs: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1-hVs2r ... sp=sharing

Comparing the last entries in old logs and new (both related to a freeze), they look similar:

Old ai_turn:

Code: Select all

*** Moving U:36 to (33,17) Best V.Tot=11
New ai_turn:

Code: Select all

*** Moving U:43 (36,7) Infantry Strelkovy to (35, 7) to block VH(35,7)
Old debug.log:

Code: Select all

-- Moving U:36 (no name) Piechota 38 [INF] from Hex(30,18) CLEAR to (33,17)
New debug.log:

Code: Select all

-- Moving U:43 (no name) Strelkovy [INF] from Hex(36,7) CLEAR to (35,7)

When playing PBEM with the new leader options i get asked to accept leaders for the other player. Happens when it is my turn but the enemy unit gets a leader in a defensive action.

Unluckily I cannot replicate the issue and don't see any reason for a dead-loop :dunno
I'll keep trying but with a single instance (only GRN01_t13e.xcsv file) it will be difficult even using the .xlog
Does it happen again with other scenario ?

One more Luis, if you remember, i asked this many times, leaders to be more than 15. Ok i know maybe is hard, but i play many times with "cheat" and had many many leaders, without problems at game. But from the other, i think 15 leaders are ok for a 50-60 units core. So if you could, add 1 leader every 15 units more.
On the other hand, I might be asking too much.
Anyway, I am so pleased with all that you have done and are doing for OG.

muchas gracias :howdy

Well, effectively it is possible to have more than 15 units with a leader regardless it is not possible to have more than 15 leaders' slots
That is several units can share the same leader with no problem; you can do using the Suite.

The point is that allowing to increase current 15 leaders' slots is difficult to implement cause that requires a lot of changes in OG and Suite which could turn very unstable both programs (at least for a while), thus I am strongly against that.

Another different thing is that you wanted to allow assigning an already existing leader to a unit matching the conditions to raise a leader, once all 15 leader's slots are already used.
But from the other, i think 15 leaders are ok for a 50-60 units core. So if you could, add 1 leader every 15 units more.
Once this second way would be accepted, additional conditions could be implemented, yes.
Anyway, I am so pleased with all that you have done and are doing for OG.

Yes, it happened for me almost everyday with basically every campaign I tried. There are two different (if I remember correctly) campaign logs related to this issue posted here and sent to email:
1. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1-hVs2r ... sp=sharing - this one unfortunately without a save
2. "Freeze report" sent to email on 6.02.2024, 16:56 - this one with a save

Nevermind, thanks for taking the time.

*Raises ears*
Would that be possible? The issue is that in long campaigns (mine tend to be long) all leaders will be assigned in the first 3-4 scenarios, and that's all: No new leader for the next 10-15 scenarios...

Of course now, with the new feature allowing you to vet new leaders, you can control how many leaders you'll have at any point, and thus keep some free slots for later units. :clap

But still, I'd be quite happy with the opportunity of adding an already existing leader to a new unit. After all, if you kept that leader the first time around, chances are you considered it as "useful", and wouldn't mind having a couple more of those... :nods

Bug report: Submarines create shadows! :eek
Latest OG (09/01/24)

Old-style (not composite!) submarines, while under water, create a telltale shadow on the surface.

Test Scenario: Just put it in my old E-File and load it, the coastal city on the left has a radar, and you'll see an arrow-shaped shadow in the middle of the sea. That shadow is created by submarines ("sea mines")... You can fly the two recon planes over there to see them (the planes can detect submarines, while the radar can't).

Not only do the submerged submarines create shadows, they also hide what's behind them (despite not having a "Cut LOS" special...)!
Now are they really submerged? I think they are supposed to be, IIRC old-style "simple" submarines were supposed to be submerged all the time (else you could just sink them with any ship), also because else the radar would see them, and the ASW recon planes would see the whole pattern, and not only just the units immediately around them. I think something got broken at some point, since I've been using those submarine-class mines quite often. :huh

I can't exactly pinpoint since when this started happening since I don't have archives of all the OG executable versions. I know that an old executable I have (file date 17/07/22, in game it says "0.93.5.0") works as expected (no shadows, no LOS issues).
In what I assume to be the latest executable (file date 09/01/24, in game it says "0.93.5.RC1.e") submarines shadow the hex they're under, and somehow hide what's behind them (like if they had the "cut LOS" special). :dunno

I wanted to ask about tile maps
Specifically, the hex_tiledecors.png files
I understand that there are terrain in the rows x3 (for dry, frozen, muddy)
What is in columns 2 through 15?
How it's working?
Why are there 22 such files (tiledecors)?

There are 22 latitudes you can choose for a scenario. Like Central Europe, Middle East, etc. Every latitude has its own set of hex tiles. The colums are there to have some variation within one latitude, so not all hex tiles look the same.
For example the clear terrain, can have two fields, or one cow and a field, two cows, or be completely clear.

Can read about tiled maps at http://www.luis-guzman.com/OpenGen_Maps.html

Tiled maps are made by using these files:

Hex_tiledecors.cfg:
A text file including options to configure how the tiled-map should be painted. See Config Tiles 2.0 for details
This file can define two new concepts:
'Adjacency': when a terrain (say a city) is adjacent to other cities, the image to paint will be selected depending how many similar terrain is adjacent: if none; if 1-3; or if 4-6;
'Random decorations': instead of using same image for all hexes having a terrain, images will be randomly picked among a set defined for that terrain.

Hex_tiledecors.png:
Has 57 rows x 15 columns by default, although can be made with only 12 columns or with more than 15.
Each terrain will pick the image from 1 of 3 consecutive rows (one for each ground condition) using one column depending settings defined.
This is the layout of columns in file and a short reference about how they are used:
  • Col#1 (T0) will be used as default tile for every terrain/ground (same than current terrain-tile in current hex_tiles.png).
  • Col#4,5,6 (S01,S02,S03) will be used to paint 'sides' if Col#1 is used to paint terrain. (replace Tiles 1.0 'sides', but using a different tile for each side).
If 'adjacency' is defined in .CFG file:
    • Col#1,2,3 (T0,T1,T2) will be used to paint terrain according how many adjacent hexes of same terrain type
    • Col#4,5,6 (S01,S02,S03) will be used to paint 'sides' if Col#1 is used
    • Col#7,8,9 (S11,S12,S13) will be used to paint sides if Col#2
    • Col#10,11,12 (S21,S22,S23) will be used to paint sides if Col#3
  • If 'random decorations' is defined in .CFG file and 'adjacency' is not, then
Col#7..last (R1..Last) will be used to paint randomly selected image for terrain
  • If both 'random decorations' and 'adjacency' are defined then
Col#13..last (R7..Last) will be used to paint randomly selected image for terrain
Hex_layers.png:
This file is used to paint 'Sides'
It has 7 rows and 6/18 columns, with images 60x50 pixels (width x height). Can include 12 additional columns, to make different layers for different ground condition

Png files can add a number (i.e Hex_tiledecors3.png + Hex_layers3.png for latitude 3 scenarios) to be used only for scenarios using that number latitude (both versions)

Hope that helps :howdy

See this: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=145#p17827
* New option to remove a leader for a given unit. Must select the unit and press <Ctrl><X>
* Option to decline unwanted leaders before raising it when active player is not AI.
* Both requiere new $rem_leader=1

There are 2 different options
1, Remove an existing leader. Select unit with leader and press Ctrl-X to remove it
2. Avoid raising a new leader when increasing unit's bars. You must decline when asking to

Both require to define $rem_leader to be 1
Is that code I need to put into something before starting a campaign?
As any $Var, a line having;

rem_leader=1

must be included in any of the .CFG files affecting the game you play: equip.CFG, "CampFileName".CFG or "ScenFileName".CFG
