Maps

What map files are used by the game? I can see maps in the editor and the editor and the game say that all the maps are there but when I try to play some scenarios the game says there is no map and wants to use those crappy tiled maps.

It appears that only png and jpg files are recognised by the exe game file. Mapx and shp files are being ignored.

Hello Brian!

Yes only png and jpg files are accepted with the sdl version, but OG should have downloaded the missing map as jpg automatically before trying to set up a tiled map. Don't you have internet connection ?

Hi Luis
No I don't have internet connection on my game pc, that is why i download a copy to my work pc and i thought by running the editor and the game and letting them check for missing files it would download all png/jpg files and I would have an updated game to put back on my PC.
But they both say no files are missing and then i am stuck using crappy tiled maps.

Can you tell me which scenarios try to use tiled map in game, after being checked by the d¡game with internet connection ?
Suite doesn't use sdl and thus won't report a map made by .shp tile as missing.

Hi Luis
There is a misunderstanding here :huh
The game loads the tiled map because there is no internet connection.
When I use the game to check if any files are missing it says all files required are available but if it needs png or jpg files it should identify them.
If the gam or editor identified the missing files I could update the files from a different computer with internet connection and this could be done in one download.
Because the game only identifies the missing files when I try to play the scenario it means I can only DL the files individually. :thud
I have no interest in using tiled maps and would like to DL all jpg/png map files in one hit.

Hi Brian :howdy

The Polish generals offer all maps (up to 26. June 2019) for download:
http://opengeneral.pl/files/OG_map_5.04.exe
The file is about 1GB in size.

when you select an efile, there is a button named "check campaigns and dl missing maps". while it can't dl the missing maps w/o net connection, it creates a log wich files (not only maps, but maps too) are missing, so you can collect which maps are missing

+1 i hope you feel that your very special problem (playing with a pc w/o internet connection) is very atypical in the 21th centruy, and opengen wasn't designed to use w/o internet connections, just like zillion other games. at least you should dl the full installer once, and the updates regularly. and if somebody would provide a "full installer of the maps"* you should have dl it again and again, as the newer maps wouldn't be part of te older "full installer", obviously

* when og project had a full map package on sourceforge, the frequent dl of this package caused the sf site blocked our project for a while because of overuse of the bandwith. as a full map package would be larger than 1gb even containing only jpg files, this would easily happen on the new server too, so there will be no full map installer there, sorry

except for those (around) 100 countries where less than 30% of population is connected ) while they probably do not play OG nor many games, there is statistical chance that they do have some comp at home and play some games :p

just saying as chance, nothing related to Puma and question, nor i need map bundle...

Let's be clear, this is not an internet problem.
For those atypical minds out there that know everything, tell me why the game says all files are in the game when I click on the button Csaba mentions and the computer is connected to the internet, and there is nothing to download, but when I try to play the scenario the game says the map is missing and will then download it?

I can tell you why, it is because the game only uses png and jpg map files but if a shp file is there it says "no problem" when clearly there is a problem because it won't use the shp file.

if the game can't use the shp file then it should download the png/jpg when it checks for missing files when an equipment file is chosen.

Why don't you use your atypical mind and remove a jpg/png file and replace it with a shp file and then try the magic button that you think dumb players haven't already tried!!

sorry, i misunderstood your problem :-o

yes, that's true, the current sdl2-based opengen doesn't support shp, and you are also right, that when checking map, an old subrutine may survived the code cleaning, and og thinks you have the map, because shp exists, but the game can't use it

nice catch!

***

@ Ale: it doesn't change the fact, that most (and more and more) games are designed to use internet connection. actually, once you installed opengen, you can play the existing stuffs w/o internet: opengen allows to use tiled maps when a map image is missing and can't be dl-ed. of course, lots of people don't prefer tiled maps, it's only an option if you are on a safari trip in a sparsely habitated area or you are deported to a gulag in siberia, etc. where no internet connection is available AND you desperately want to play, you can do that. but still: updates and dl-ing missing maps makes internet connection important. like it or not

Hi Brian,
OG decodes the map number when the scenario define a .shp in standard format, to check availability and to try to download the jpg/png if missing.
Obviously there is something wrong, and thus I asked for a sample in order to test and fix.

I didn't ask to send the scenario, I only need to know which scenario can I use as a sample of the problem.

I don't like pushing for a reply, because sometimes a lack of response means that the problem is magically over. :)

Hi Luis
The maps download when you try to play the scenario but they are downloading when you check for missing files. This would be for any jpg or png file if a shp is present.
Here are a few examples from the “we search for ways “ campaign
Shp files
42300
30500
3600
50000

Why do you use * .shp files?
Do you play PG2?
Newer maps have never had * .shp files -> only * .png and * .jpg ...

I don't know which version of LXF's" we search for ways you have", because the one I can test has all maps defined with numbers, nome define "map###00" :huh

For example: BN10S23.xscn has defined the map as "36" not as "map3600" ... thus I'd need your "BN10S23.xscn" file to replicate the issue.

Luis, it's not efile or scenario specific. the bug is that when an shp file exists, then opengen doesn't recognize the jpg file as a missing file, and doesn't dl it at all

here you are my chechk:

1. renamed the main "map" folder ("map.back" or anything you wish)

2. checked the current cc76 (it has only 12 scenarios, so a good testing material) with suite, and it says 10 map files are missing:
Image

3. dl-ed 436, 437 and 439 shp files from Gilestiel's site and put into my temporal "map" folder (the original one is still renamed)
Image

4. launched the efile selector in opengen
Image

5. pressed the "check..." button, and voilà, 436, 437 and 439 maps seem to be present, despite they are shp files, not jpg
Image

of course, we can say, people should delete all shp files manually and let the suite, game to dl the missing jpg files from the servers, but imo the checking process should also ignore the still existing shp files when it creates a log file about the missing maps :2cents

Anyway do you remember of any scenario (old CC perhaps") defining maps as "map##00" yet ?

first i thought all old ccs defined maps in the "map##00" format, but i checked the earliest cc01 with suite pg2 4.301, and e.g. the "invasion salerno" scenario says this for the map file: "salerno.map (#5) < .png", then i realized that old scn files don't define the map numbers, only the external map description files do that, so i tried to open salerno.map with the old suite pg2, but it crashed (i have no shp files). the current opensuite shows "salerno.map (#5)" too. i checked salerno.map with a hex viewer too, but can't find the "map" or "shp" strings, so i'm not sure, sorry

Yes, the "map###" string was stored by SuiteP2 before the current SuiteOpen was created, surely because at that time, automatic downloaded was implemented using MapFinder's, by ftp (as ###.zip) because it only stored .shp files at that time.

Thanks a lot for the list :bow I can now to test that everything is handled properly by Suite and OG.

Btw: I am restoring the possibility to download missing map files from the Suite.

I conducted a test
I changed map number 21.jpg to MAP2100.shp
I disconnected the internet
I changed in the campaign G05_gb (Blitzkrieg by Gustlik) - the first scenario G05_gb00.xscn
I assigned MAP2100.shp - instead of the map 21.jpg
Image
Image

I used OpenGenDD -> the campaign loads on the map (shp file)
Image
Image

I used OpenGenRC1 -> the campaign wants to download map 21 (no internet) -> loads a tiled map
