For King & Empire (by Immortal Technique) - with AK efile v.0.63 & PG2 2.20 exe - completed in Dec'2009

I think it's good time to play some of new campaigns, as I have my PG2 set working again. I have checked a list of recent challenges and decided to fight for the UK at the beginning. I still remember that my first ever CC was old good Steve's BWDIC (CC9 in 2002), so it will be like a reminiscence from the past. I will go at 100% as usually and suppose it will be just enough challenging for my actual playing skills.
Later I plan to try CC45, to see Doug's modified version of GG campaign. I played it with WK efile long time ago, but was only 12 scenarios long then.

1. Gallabat

Rather easy opening scenario, but things went slowly due to minefields. One infantry was detached to capture the first VH behind escarpment, so was excluded from battle and spent all the time walking around without single shot (Italian arty placed in that VH was blown out by my artillery in advance). Italian air force didn't scare me too much thanks to my AD contingent. Three planes went down during the battle. I missed V limit by one turn (due to heavy entrenched bunker in last VH) and have got safe TV. Didn't lost single unit here.

2. Advance to Agordat

Before the battle:
Replaced 40mm AD with small 20mm Flak and purchased another one Infantry and trucks for all of them.

Not much to do for AD guns in this battle due to air superiority, so perhaps it could be better to sell them and buy more arties.
All advance was very slow due to mines, bunkers and heavy entrenched enemy units. Majority of units that I sent on the south were seriously weakened due to unlucky rugged defenses during engagements with two closer VH defenders, so they were not able to clear the way to the last southeastern VH fast enough. I missed V by one turn (again) and got regular TV. Looks like it may be standard achievement for me in this campaign, but I'm happy with it anyway. It's definitely not Blitz type campaign, but I like it so far, as I prefer smaller scale battles.

3. Keren

Before the battle:
Sold both 20mm Flaks and less experienced Infantry with truck. Purchased Infantry on foot. Upgraded best Infantry to Ghurka and both Mortars to 25Pdr (one with truck).

Very slow battle, mainly with one hex movements. Anyway, with good artillery support it was possible to advance continuously. Couple of times I attacked impatiently loosing several strength points, so I must spent majority of available resources on refitting. Lost new inexperienced Infantry when attacked in the middle along the valley. That HQ bunker was hard to defeat without any engineering units. Finally I got last turn BV, with some sort of luck. The last northern VH was cleared under 2 howitzers and 2 Beaufighters attack, so I could drive into it in truck. If the defending unit survived even with 1 point strength – it wasn't possible in this turn. So I'm very happy with the result, and my achievement surely was very appreciated by HQ, as they sent mighty recon proto as reward.

4. Operation Ironclad

Before the battle:
Upgraded remaining Infantry to Ghurka and Engineer.

Deployed 3 infantry units and 3 guns. Decided to go without recon, counting on BI leader which allows to go fast forward blindfolded. BV was close, but missed it by one turn. RN support was not so effective as should be, as ships were slowed down by fighting with French submarines. Destroyers performed badly, shooting without luck against those sub's, so bigger ships must advance carefully to avoid loses. Engineer and one Ghurka came to the city seriously weakened as well, so deliberated approach was necessary till RN arrived. Anyway, I accept this result, as I'm not intended to replay scenarios for better score if completed successfully and my forces haven't taken bigger casualties.

5. Mandritsara

Before the battle:
Sold experienced recon. Purchased one Ghurka and truck for one arty.

Easiest scenario so far. Got quick BV 3 turns before limit. With my army composition advance was rather easy, with Engineer and guns going along the road, focusing on bunkers killing, and Ghurkas flanking maneuvers to clear perimeters of enemies. Finally nice leader for my arty, but unfortunately without proto.

6. Mareth Line

Before the battle:
Replaced newest Ghurka with Engineer. Purchased my first tank – Sherman V.

I sent 4 good units (tank, recon, IT arty and experienced Engineer) to help Scots assaulting northern path. Two Ghurka, green Engineer and 3 arties came southern way through the mountains. Stronger group on the north cleared its way smoothly without problems and take the last VH 3 turns before BV limit. Southern group took 2 VH on its way in the meantime. The battle was harder in that area, as German infantry units were very strong opponents and some of my Ghurka were seriously worn.

At the end I cheated due to frustration. I've got another recon proto, Jeep AB this time. That unit isn't even able to shoot. So I reloaded once to have something useful instead, and got Valentine tank as a replacement. Sorry, but it was too much.

7. Operation Vulcan

Before the battle:
Purchased additional 25Pdr and Ghurka.

It was harder battle than was expected, due to stubborn defense of desperate elite German troops. My Sherman was scared by its first meeting with Tiger and lost almost half of strength after single shoot of that beast. Luckily the cat was eliminated a while later with combined strikes from air and ground, when tried to hide in rough terrain. Generally farthermost objectives on both map ends were hard to reach in decent time, as my forces were really worn before approached. All three (one on the east shore and two behind the stream on the northwest) survived BV limit, and the last of them was captured even outside of V limit, which was missed by one turn.
Now it's time to visit Italy. I heard somewhere that in Salerno may be a little hot in near future, so I should to think carefully what to buy before travel.

8. Salerno

Before the battle:
Sold newest Ghurka. Purchased: 2x 17Pdr AT, 2x 40mm AD and another 25Pdr.

I expected that this battle will be harder, but was rather exhausting than difficult. I've got safe V, missing BV by two turns, without core losses. Obviously casualties taken here in Salerno was biggest in campaign so far, exceeding those taken in seven previous battles together.

9. Viktor Line

Before the battle:
Sold one AD and one AT. Purchased: two Sherman tanks.

This campaign may be classified definitely as Infantry General challenge, looking on the battles passed so far. Enemy armor is presented only accidentally, perhaps only 4-5 units here, so must important thing is to have ability cutting your way through entrenched enemy infantry and bunkers supported by deliberately placed artillery pieces. In that environment good infantry and artillery units rules, and my tanks played only supporting roles. Both rookie tanks didn't gain much experience here, so their effectiveness against German veteran units currently is very low. Luckily infantry and artillery contingents are almost fully packed with leaders, so they did very good job, just enough to get BV with one turn in spare.

11. Operation Overlord

Before the battle:
Sold: Sherman III and AD gun. Upgraded: Valentine to Firefly, Humber to Cromwell.

I thought this battle will be easier, as everybody takes BV here, but not me. Deployed Firefly, Engineer, 25Pdr and Cromwell recon. Majority of beach objectives were taken without delay, excepting westernmost. Delayed units couldn't take the VH with artillery bunker in neighborhood on time. German counterattack form southeast was stopped, but the VH in the middle of map was not taken on time as well. Both problematic VH were captured two turns after BV limit.

12. Bridgehead Expansion

Before the battle:
Sold: Sherman. Upgraded: remaining Sherman V to Firefly IIC.

Again limited deployment scenario, so I decided to reduce my army, adding more quality instead of quantity.
I stopped this battle after couple of turn, as was obvious that auxiliaries in the center swept by elite SS division counterattack may be not able to fight for central VH. Fireflies didn't perform well against many entrenched soft targets, so I decided replace them by Crocodiles, which should work better for purpose. The same price allows switching between Crocodile and Firefly without cost.

The second approach went good. I lost temporarily one of VH on the east, when defending entrenched paratroopers were blown out, but it was retaken easily. Advance in the middle of map was more deliberated, so I avoided bigger casualties between auxiliaries and captured central VH on time. Hardest objective was that westernmost, with road blocked by mines and entrenched defenders, which was impossible to pass due to boccages. Finally I had some luck, when softened defenders of last VH could be overran by Crocodile which was on the last fuel drops, but then my recon was able to sneak into empty VH. Got last turn BV, but no prototype again.

13. Operation Epsom

Before the battle:
Upgraded: Ghurka to Engineer. Switched tanks back to Fireflies.

At HQ I upgraded one Ghurka to Engineer. I don't expect mountains on the way to Berlin. Now campaign looks like never-ending battle against mines, bunkers and heavy entrenched infantry, so Engineers should be more effective. I plan to built all Engineers infantry contingent, as have not enough prestige to do bigger upgrades. Adding new units on this stage looks like mission impossible, as my top units have big problems when dealing with elite entrenched enemies now.
Some intelligence reports said that German armored units may be presented in area, so I changed my tanks back to Fireflies.

It was most annoying scenario I played in this campaign. Really nothing to do, just move your units, mainly infantry supported by massive artillery contingent, hex by hex. And you must be careful just like playing chess, as one hasty move may block another unit which you need to continue your advance. I did it, so was stalemated and must spent some time to unblock position.
Tanks take the route on the east to the airfield, and then back to the west where was main operational area. Didn't see much armor on the way and speed wasn't essential due to blockades, so I think Crocodiles could be more effective here as well. Elite German Panzer Division was opposed mainly by infantry and artillery, with some help of two Tempests.
Finally I captured the last southern VH, but missed BV by two turns due to route traffic and mistake I did in order of units movement.

14. Operation Charnwood

Before the battle:
Upgraded last Ghurka to Engineer. Switched tanks to Crocodiles.

I detached two best arties with leaders (AA & IT) and sent them to help auxiliaries attacking southern VH. The rest of my forces directed to Caen and airfield VH's. The plan was OK and I've got BV with one turn in spare. Again without proto. I think it will be hard to keep new proto alive, if I got any, at very late stage of campaign. I think that possibility of buying new units with some experience (e.g. 2-3 bars) could be good at this stage, otherwise you are practically fixed with your core as is, making available upgrades only.

15. Operation Goodwood

Before the battle:
Upgraded 17Pdr to Archer.

I did it in the second attempt and finished 'UK Caen Campaign' finally. Five scenarios in one map, I think Technique overpasses even Steve's Budapest series here (yes, I still remember of CC6).

This time added one core arty, without leader, to Villers Boccage defenders, and this was enough to keep positions. All entrenched posts survived.
In the middle auxiliaries performed very well capturing both German VH in advance, and even didn't loose their own VH for a while.
Main attack with all core forces went on the east behind the river, coming from the north to the south. Both nasty Tigers were eliminated early without problem, as were surprised in the city. One of Crocodiles got nice DF leader, which was the last opportunity to have any, as all units have passed 5 bars now. The last southernmost VH was taken one turn before BV.
Finally got prototype, 44 Royal Marine infantry, which was very common here. I would like rather don't get it at all and keep 'chance for prototype' counter higher, but now it was reset.

16. Operation Paddle

Before the battle:
Purchased Archer.

This battle was rather refreshing after long stay in Caen. Just straight forward assault operation only with use of my core forces. Only one enemy armored unit was presented and was killed by green AT, so my infantry supported by artillery had no reason to scare. The new Marine infantry seems to be useless, having awful battle odds against any target.
Easy BV with one turn in spare.

17. Market Garden

Before the battle:
Sold Royal Marine and 25Pdr w/o leader. Upgraded: 25Pdr to Sexton. Purchased: Sexton.

I decided replace experienced arty without leader with new self-propelled Sexton. Perhaps it got leader somewhere, and it's much easier to collect experience by artillery from distance, than by direct assault green unit as infantry, which may be killed easily. I added another Sexton by upgrading Fire Discipline arty.

The battle was very entertaining with some interesting turning points. At the beginning everything looked safe, as major battle groups captured their objectives, including Arnhem, quite soon. Anyway, some heavy entrenched defensive points, as Nijmegen, were untouchable for paratroopers without proper support and waited for main forces. Their worked as an obstacles, slowing down my advance to Arnhem, where paratroopers after early success went in the meantime under heavy attack of German infantry supported by Tiger and King Tiger units. After airfield capturing I was able to send them as reinforcements 3 American paratroopers units, which landed in the city and helped a lot to defend it.
When finally the road was cleaned I was counting on last turn BV, but was badly surprised. Additional hidden VH appeared, so I must quickly react sending some closest to that area units to fight for it. From other side due to road traffic on bridges the main battle group advanced a little to slow for BV. In addition in the last turn for BV (#10) my northernmost VH defensed by entrenched paratroopers was captured by Germans, so I've got another objective to take.
I managed to capture both lacking VH two turns after BV limit, but it was definitely latest time to do it. All my units, some seriously worn, were placed in long line between Eindhoven and Arnhem, when some crazy German panzers were rolling all around them. This battle looks definitely like 'BV or die' type (with some sort of luck perhaps BV+max 2 turns, or die).

I don't think this scenario is too easy just like is now. You must act quickly and some luck is needed as well. Adding more German artillery may spoil it and ruin real chance to win. Now you know it is possible and you try your best, feeling enemy breath on your neck. If you were slowed down by more arties on the way wasting couple of turns, you loose chance to win it at all and only fight to survive remains.

18. Breda

Before the battle:
Purchased my first plane – Mosquito recon.

I decided to try flying recon instead of standard ground unit, as it has the same price as Staghound III. It was quite useful hovering over battlefield without any danger, as German planes or flaks were absent. The battle went smoothly from the beginning, but going further you are forced to keep good pace of advance, as enemy reinforcements come all the time later. Deployment is possible in two groups, western (6 units) and eastern (the rest). Both have some objectives to take, but that on the west has more important task, as must capture four of them including Breda. Access to Breda from the east is more difficult due to usual obstacles.

19. Ardennes Counteratack

Before the battle:
Replaced Crocodiles with Fireflies – expecting German panzers.

Events went slowly, due to snowy weather and terrain. Units that move on wheels had real problems here. They were behind those with tracked movement all the time. Luckily I had Sextons which provided continuous support going with front line units. Some amount of Panthers and PzIVs with supporting Grenadiers and couple of PzJagers were presented, but didn't scare my tanks and anti-tanks with high HA values. Some was ambushed in snowy weather, some surprised in forests, so the main problem here were obstacles (mines, entrenchments, or terrain) which slowed down my advance so effectively, that I was able to take last turn Victory only.

20. Roer Triangle

Before the battle:
Purchased temporary two Scots for support and replaced Fireflies by Crocodiles expecting static battle against defensive positions.

It was very easy battle. The route is obvious due to impassable river. Ah, I almost forgot the only thrilling moment, when unexpected King Tiger appeared and reduced my Crocodile to 4 points. Luckily my trap which was set with use both Archers succeed and beast was eliminated. I've got safe BV three turns before limit. No proto award, but my junior Sexton got leader (I was counting on that when replaced experienced 5-bars 25Pdr with this green unit).

21. Wesel

Before the battle:
Sold temporary units. Upgraded 25Pdr to Sexton.

I was afraid about landing on the Rhine river banks, but operation went smoothly. My army, divided on two similar task forces, advanced gradually eliminating defenders on the way. It looked as safe BV on the beginning, but at later stage my advance were disturbed by some German units that appeared randomly on the battlefield in some undefended places. One of them even recaptured one of VH which was left empty. I must start hunting for them instead of going forward, so some time was wasted. I approached to the last, easternmost VH, on the time for BV, but only with recon and weakened Engineer. The weather was rainy at the moment, so couldn't use auxiliary Lancaster as well. Captured the last objective in the next turn, one after BV limit.

Sold flying recon, as with the only one path to go my Cromwell should be enough. Purchased two infantry units for captured objectives securing.
Very easy battle at the end. Just go straight forward along the road and kill rather weak opponents. IT Sexton helped to cross river quickly. Managed to get BV 5 turns before the limit, so German reinforcements were not able to disturb my advance.

The war is over now. I played this CC in crazy pace, comparing to my averages from the past, so I need rest for a while.

I really enjoyed playing this campaign, as it presents different approach to some aspects, comparing to many older campaigns played before. Enemy air force was presented in historical way, going weaker and weaker when the war is closing to the end. Similar thing with other units, which were frequently experienced and with good quality equipment, but in reduced quantity. The usual combos AD/ATY/AT around VH were used moderately. I really like this campaign, despite some :boohoo in couple of battles. I have replayed it recently in OG with Open AK.
