Playtest: From D-Day to Deutschland

This thread is about Major Heinz' and mine new collaborative campaign "From D-Day to Deutschland", a allied campaign that will take the player from the beaches of the Normandie to the industrial heart of Germany, the Ruhrgebiet. We just started building the campaign and Major Heinz has finished the first scneario:

Current scenario: Landing at Omaha Beach

Our Core starts in the center, with our core planes at the western map edge. There are auxiliary forces in the west, center and southeast and some planes in the south.
To make it short: in th north i had only 3 aux units and they had a hard time, going nowhere.
In the south i had more auxiliary units and i landed about 6 of them at the beach and drove the rest to the center. I thought is is better to keep most of my units together, which is one of my favored tactics. I can maximize firepower and the units can help each other when their life is at threat.

I was a bit shy and hold my planes back at first. But then i decided to fly a aux fighter to the central city to uncover the enemy AD positions. There was one large 4-range AD and i attacked it will 3 bombers or so, frist with the level bombers, then with my core dive bomber. One turn later my core bombers took the AD out and the sky above the central city was mine! By that time i had complete air superiority.

Meanwhile most of my men got landed at the beach in front of the central city and grinded through the Atlantikwall fortifications. With the naval support fire of 4 and a half (the destroyers range was to short) ships i had a good backing and eventually the central city was captured. I then landed my paratroopers on the road, leading to the northeast, anticipating an enemy attack. I also sent my two tanks, my core para HQ and two aux infantry units to the northeast.
The rest of my army got split into two battlegroups and attack the german fortifications from behind and from the sides, rolling up the field from behind and grinding their way to the western and southeastern cities.
In the north my strong air force damaged all of the german units and they were easy prey for my "boots on the ground".

At that point the battle was already won and i tried to gain as much experience as possible with my core units.
BV after 15 turns was possible, but i played two more turns in order to capture two flagged hex. I think we can adjust (decrease) the turn limits...

After this nice battle it is my turn for the next two scenarios... to be continued...

Here is my AAR. I started the Campaign again, because Randowe said that there are too many turns. Unfortunately I had bad luck with the waether in the last turns and could not use most of the Bombers. The tactic was similar to Randowes. I breaked through the Atlantic Wall in the centre after heavy bombings and support fire from the ships. The mobile troops went into the North. Some troops drived into the west. At this time the VHs in the west and east were already mine. I landed my core paras in the west in the back of the VH and attacked the VH after some bombings. Unfortunalety I ran into a rugged defense and in the end of the battle all Units in the west were really "understrong". In the east I used the aux Rangers and landed in the rear of the VH. With the help of Bombers and ships I could take the VH next round. The way to the North is hard because of Bocage Terrain. At first I was a Little bit careful, because many of my Bombers had a lack of ammo. The aux para engineers had built some airfields and I could prepare for an attack. A few turns before the end I discovered that the AI had left the regular airfield on the map and I captured it again. Unfortunately in the next turn the rain began :doh
By this time there were only infantry as defenders and I could kill two of them every turn with the help of level bombers. After 17 turns I could capture the last VH. I think 16 turns is the Right decision.
Some units had a very hard battle. Two units gained over 200exp. :cool
Why is the experience from the Range 2 Sherman not shown? Is it becuase he is reinforcement?

Yes. IIRC i think this was solved for units by trigger but not for core units arriving as reinforcements it seems.
But you can still see the experience. The second Sherman has 108 Exp it is just not shown as [+108]

2 units with more than 200 Exp gain is nice :cool

The second Scenario made by Randowe is done.

Current Scenario: Battle of Cherbourgh; v

Our troops start in the south of the map. There are a few aux units, but no planes and tanks. Later in the south reinforcements will arrive.
This was my third try. The first version of the scenario was too hard, and Randowe and me did not reach a BV. This is the corrected version with a little bit stronger allied and weaker Germans. I reloaded the proto because in my first try I get a Super Pershing and it would not be fair if I had to lose it because of restarting the scenario in another version. In HQ I bought a recon, a Firefly, two aris, a polish Anti-tank, a flak and a (R)-Bomber. I deployed the flak, an artillery, the Sherman DD and two infantry units at the western coast. They drove the road on the Atlantic and had only a little fighting. Four units I deployed in the centre. They attacked the central VH from the south. The most units I deployed in the east. They drove to the central VH, where the first stronger units are. Unfortutaly the terrain there is bocage and so it lasts several rounds to break through. A few aux units and a core infantry drove on the eastern road and took the flagged hexes there. After I broke thourgh in the centre I splitted my units. The half of them went into the south and joined the eastern group. The others attacked Cherbourgh frontal. Until this part the scenario is not really difficult. In Cherbourh there are several Feldkommando Units, Flaks / Air Defenses, an arty bunker and an artillery. Because of the several flaks an attack with my core planes was not possible. So I used the tanks first to let the artillery run out of ammo. bv-1 I get the eastern city VH and last turn bv I get the northern city BV. Unfortunately my troops in the west were too weak to break through the defensive line in the west and I missed the BV, but could take the lasting VH next round. But normal Victory is ok for me. I messed some Things up like deploying the Super Persing not as first front unit.

The most flagged hexes I could take. Only a few of them (blue circles) I missed.

Current scenario: Battle of Cherbourg

I upgraded a regular infantry to naval combat engineers. They also had to repair the eastern arfield. I also upgraded my Flak MG to a paratrooper MG. Then i bought two medium artilleries, a recon-fighter, a recon car, a SPAT and a cheap tank.

I deployed most of my core units in the east and two smaller detachments in the center and west. I also deployed some paratroopers at sea and later, when the airfield was repaired, embarked more aux airborne units. All paratroopers flew to the north and landed close the outer defence line of Cherbourg in the east. They grinded their way through the defences, but were to weak to attack the city center. So they waited until the rest of the army arrived.

Meanhwile most of my heavy units attacked the central VH, the city of Valognes. Smaller detachments drove to the north as well, taking routes in the west and east. After Valognes was under control, my whole army met south of Cherbourg and took the city with force brute and the assistance of my paratroopers which were comming from the east.
I didn't hesitate and attacked the city with my planes too. My level bomber always the first to bomb the enemy AD units and then my bombers and fighters took their turns. Got a last turn BV.

Current scenario: Battle of Caen

AT HQ i upgraded the transport of my airborne mortar and bought a tank and a recon. I deployed my paratroopers at sea and embarked one more at the airfield and sent them to the east where they linked up with the already landed aux paratroopers and local Resistance units.

In the west i deployed my best tank and other units and sent them straight down south while the mass of the army moved towards Caen.
After taking Caen, the army dispersed and i sent units into all directions. In Caen is a leader-tigger (which is announced in the intro) and i sent one of my recons to take it. Later i got a nice combat support leader on a tank :cool

There were several german counterattacks comming from the south in the west and center of the map.
In the east, my paratrooper and Resistance force took the most eastern VH and then they disperesd too and were sent into various directions in order to collect flags and prestige.
I knew what to expect and BV was possible 4 turns before the limit but i played some more turns to gain prestige and experience. Major Heinz got a last turn BV, so i will leave the limits unchanged.

Current Scenario: Battle of Caen, ltbv

At HQ I upgraded the Marines into a Special Forces unit, buyed a Sexton and a recon.

I deployed my P-Units on the water and some weak Units on the eastern deployment hexes. The best Units I deployed in the western Zone and some average Units in the middle. The Units in the middle went directly towards Caen and captured it into three turns. My polish SU get a nice leader in a leader-trigger. The central Group went into the south and captured the southern VH. This was the easiest part, because there I used the most Units.
My tank Units first captured the Caen Airfield and went then into the South-West. They had a hard time, because of tank conterattacks and bocage.
The eastern troops captured at first the VH near the river and then linked up witrh the resistance and aux paras. My paras were landed on the airfield (I wanted to have an airfield in the east too) in the North of These VH hex. Later I splitted my Units into two parts. As I was seeing, that some serious tanks were driving in the south I drived some Units from the east in the south, too. But this caused Trouble with the VH in the northeast. I underestimated the Germans in this area and an ambush and a Marder crippled my heavy troops there. Unfortunately now the rain began for four turns and I had some Trouble without air support. Later I buyed a second and cheap Level-Bomber and with the help of Air Force I could capture the NE VH. BV-1 I had captured all VHs. Unfortunately some recons had sneaked behind my lines and recaptured two VHs. It lasts to ltbv to recapture the Caen Air Field.

You can see on the Picture the VHs that the enemy captured (blue circles) and the tank battles (black circles).

I missed 160pp for flagged hexes, but that is ok for me.

Current scenario: Tank Battle of Avranches

I got a enginner infantry proto and bought the best bomber in the US arsenal. Now i have two of them. I also upgraded the 3inch mortar to a paratrooper version.

I deployed my amphibious tank in the west, an infantry in the center and the rest of my core in the east. The briefing mentions an german armoured counterattack and i left my two best tanks and few other units behind to guard my VH in the north.

The rest of my army, core and auxiliary units, moved southwards on a broad front. There was only little german restistance in the first turns. When my units got closer to Avranches, they met a group of german units waiting for them north of the river (i forgot to paint them on the map). I used my planes to weaken the enemy if possible, but got hit by a large AD gun and had to stay out of range until i decided that i have to the the AD gun out. My level bomber was the first to attack it. Other planes followed.
When the germans north of the Sée river got destroyed i shelled the city and its defenders from across the river. My units got stuck in a hugh traffic jam. I sent some damaged and aux units to the north in order to bolster the defence of my VH. I had no idea about the strength about the aforementioned counterattack.

Now the time had come to cross the Sée river and take Avranches and backed by my [C]-units the strongest units fought their way across the bridge and into the northern outskirts of the city. Capturing the city was not that hard, but just south of the city i met some german paratroopers which proved to be hard to destroy.
The next natural obstacle was the Sélune river south of Avranches. It southern shore of the Sélune was only lightly defended and i could cross the river much fastern than the Sée river. The next objective was the airfield where a group of german units had gathered. I sent some fast units around the airfield in a wide flanking maneuver in order to attack the last VH in the southwest as well.

Meanwhile the german 2. Panzerdivision attacked my base in the north. I had all my planes in the air and the already damaged german units got further weakened by my air force. When they approached my lines they could do only little harm.

In the south my units had taken the airfield and i was very lucky at the end when i was able to push the defender of the last enemy VH out of the city and capture it with a recon unit. So i made a last turn BV.

Current Scenario: Tank Battle of Avranches

At HQ I upgraded the DD Sherman to a Range 2 Sherman. That was all what I could do, because I bought a Level-Bomber in the middle of the Caen Scenario.

I deployed nearly all my Units in the east. I left my best HA tanks in the east to secure the VH. In the west I let a infantry, a anti-tank gun and an artillery around the VH, because I was not really sure, if the German reinforcements will sent some troops in the west, too. They had a lazy job without any fights.

A few hexes before Avranches the Panzer-Lehr Division hold the front line. I used the Level-Bombers to let them run out of ammo and could destroy the tanks. But this was not so easy as it seems. Avranches was captured after I first attacked the AD and then the 150mm Artillery with my Bombers and artillery..
Two already Little damaged infantry Units went into the east. There was a lonely MG Bunker with a experience trigger.
After Avranches were mine some infantry Units, a Sherman and an artillery turned around and helped to defend the northeastern VH. The other Units drived into the south. They had a Little Trouble, because after some turn all my plains turned back to the airfield and waited for the counterattack.
I had lots of luck that the 2. Panzer-Division arrived the Battlefield, when it began to rain. My Level-Bombers attacked the german SPATYS and let them run out of ammo. My Super Pershing could overrun many times and I could destroy the Panzer-Division completely. After 16 turns I could capture the southern VH and won.

Some changes were made for the final Version. The 2. Panzer-Division now will arrive two turns earlier. I had played this too after changing the Scenario. Now it is more difficult and if it does not rain, when the 2. Panzer-Division arrives the Battlefield it is more difficult to handle the German tanks.

The AAR is from the first run and I decided to Play on with this save game. I get a nice leader for my Flying Fortress.

Current scenario: Falaise Pocket

Phew, this was a hard one. Major Heinz needed several tries to make this easier (for me :lol ) to get to the final version of this scenario.

I had not enough Prestige to buy what i wanted: A 5.5inch gun. So hestitated and didn't know what to do and finaly ended up with a temporary fighter-bomber. It gained only 53 experience points, so it will be definitely temporary. With a hero performance it might would have persuaded me, but with this outcome it will be easy to dismiss it at the start of the next scenario :yes

The goal in this scenario is to destroy 80 nemy units. After managing the HQ i deployed all my core units in the south and my planes in the northwest. My tactics were the same in every of my three tries: I used the Dives river as a natural barrier. So i drove all my aux units as fast as possible to the river and tried to block the bridges. Only 2 or 3 fast german units were able to cross the river before i had manned all northern ends of the bridges. I sent some of my core units across the river in the east, but most of my core was sneaking silently behind the german army while my planes flew sortie after sortie. The germans had a lot of Flak and AD and some of my aux planes got hit hard (I was much more careful with my core planes).

So when the bridges were blocked and the german retreat was stopped i started to attack the german army from behind with my core tanks.
North of the river i also prepared to counter german counterattacks :lol which are announced to come from the north and northeast. My aux infantries layed as many mines as they could. Later, when all of the german infantry was destroyed in the north i layed more mines, just to harrass the enemy.
I also started to withdrew more and more units from the river to the north and northeast when i was sure that the enemy at the river was under control.

In the later stage of the scenario i also tried to pick up as many kills with my core as possible. My core picked up 58/80 kills but unfortunately the experience gain was not that high. One infantry didn't even fire a single shot. The other infantry units gained only little exp as well...
I guess BV in turn 9/11 was possible but i played one more turn to get the kills on my core account.

Current Scenario: Falaise Pocket; bv-2

Yeah this one is an easier Version. The Problem was that I did not tried to block the Dives, but build a Hooker on the east side of the Dives and let the Germans run inside. After this I attacked the rear guard of the flleing Germans and overwhelmed the Units in the pocket from behind. This one was better designed in my opinion, because there was a real Chance to Escape for the Germans if the Player really messed up the Scenario. But it is true, that Players Always will try to block the bridges over the river. And if he did it, he will Always lose a core unit, because the German tanks in the pocket then will attack the core Units, especially because all Units were fearless. So I changed the Scenario a Little bit and tried to block the bridges, too, to test it. It is still fun and if the Player is not careful enough he still can lose a core unit.

I get a Pershing+Infantry as proto :cool
On HQ I buyed a Achilles anti tank. There were three directions for my core units. The Firefly and Super Pershing I sent over the first bridge. In this area the conterattack of the 9th SS Panzer Division (the unit is not so called in the scenario, because Randowe and I decided to not name a unit into a SS devision) would be.
The two Shermans drived to the central bridge. There were most of the rest of the german tanks. But at this time most of the German tanks had already suffered heavy losses through my plains and they were an easy target for my Shermans. In one round I could overrun ten Units with the two tanks.
The Anti-Tank units, Pershing+Infantry and the flak I sended to the northern bridge. The infantry advanced on a broad front between these bridges and fighted against the Units between the bridges (black circle), there was infantry the main opponent. Fast all units on the western side of the Dives were beaten and my core units could help to destroy the two conterattacking german SS Panzer-Divisionen. I could end in nine turns (bv-2), because I had sent the Firefly and the Super Pershing to the southern bridge. There I could destroy one of the Panzer-Divisionen really fast.

All my tanks now have a leader. Generally it rained several leaders for me in the scenario. Unfortunately a tank get Liberator. That is misfortune, because this is a bad leader for testing a campaign. I will change it into Overwatch before starting the next scen. Overwatch is my favorite leader, but it seems that there is only a little chance to get the leader in OG. I think in PG2 it were a little more common.

Current Scenario: Siege of Dunkerque; ltbv

I get a Jet Fighter as core unit. On HQ I upgraded the engineers into Armoured Division. Engineers are cool, but not if it has Street Fight. This is tautologous. The Armoured Division has cool SA, and with Street Fight These Units are the best weapon again bunker, flak, pak and entrenched infantry This is that I learned in my own Forward, Comrade Campaign. It did a good Job in this Scenario. I will upgrade another infantry into engineers in one of the next Scenarios instead.

The Player starts in the south of the map. I moved my Units into three directions. The western and the middle direction had the best Units. In the east I only moved a few core infantry that helped the aux Units.
At the end of the first turn I had to do my first and only reload. I was not Aware that the germaqn plains could attack me in turn 1 and my whizbang artillery was destroy. After the reload it survived with the strenght of 1 and it was not useful anymore in the Scenario. The german fighters were a real pain in the neck, especially because my best fighter had really misfortune in the first fight and after it only strength of 5. The Germans only had weak Units in this area, but it was enough to slow my Units. The western Units finally could get the western airfield and moved forward. Unfortunately a german recon had sneaked behind my lines and could recapture the airfield :eek I moved my Firefly back and could destroy the recon in two turns.
In the middle the central VH was also critical. It lasts two turns to destroy all units there. Unfortunately in this time it began to rain for several rounds.
In the east I moved fast forward but the VH there was a hard one. There was no chance to get a hand on the defending artillery and I had to risk my infantry units by exercising assaults. After a few turns I get this VH but there was no chance to get to the flagged hexes in the northeast of the map.
The last VH Dunkerque was critical. Until the last turn I did not believe that I will get a bv. After a suicide attack from my weaker Level-Bomber (the other one was already crippled by a german fighter) on a big AD and an attack from my Dive Bomber on the defending infantry, I could overrun it with one of the Shermans and luckily he had still one move left.
I missed four flagged hexes, but that is okay for me.
A nice scenario. Not that hard, but with a short BV limit.

Current scenario: Siege of Dunkerque

At HQ i sold the unlucky fighter-bomber and bought a 5.5inch gun. I had around 180pp left and after some turns and some captured flags i bought a Czechoslovak infantry + truck, just to have all player nations in my core army. The Czechoslovak infantry could not make up the ground and arrived pretty late on the battlefield in the north, so it gained only 4 exp.
The player gets a little present for field testing and evaluation: a free core Gloster Meteor jet fighter.

The Czechoslovak 1st armoured division took part in the siege of Dunkerque and will fight along the player's army in this scenario. There are also few Canadian units.
I followed the same routes and my tactics were pretty much the same than Heinz' tactics and there is no need to paint a map and make many words this time. Even the flagged hex i could NOT capture were the same :lol
At the beginning of the battle we met only little resistance and few dispersed german units. The closer we get to Dunkerque, the more bunkers and obstacles block our way. Like the Major said, it is not a hard scenario. See it as a breather between the hard scenarios of Falaise and Arnhem ;)

Current scenario: Operation Market Garden

Got a Sherman Flametank proto. The tank itself is already outdated, but with the flamethrower it still can do something against infantry :ihope
The briefing mentions a strong german air force and so i bought two self propelled FLAK. I had not enough money to buy two of the very best flaks units, but i wanted to acquire two and so i ended of with a FLAK-truck and -amored car.

I deployed all my core units in the south and my core para units close to the airfield, where i embarked them in the first and second turn.
There are a lot of aux paratroopers in the air already (yellow circles), ready to make combat drops and take the bridges near the big cities of Arnhem in the north, Nijmegen in the center and Eindhoven in the south. Later the polish airborne force appears in the north too.
I thought it would be a good idea to maximize firepower and also get a better defence position and flew ALL aux paratroopers to the north and dropped them around Arnhem.
My core and the rest of the aux army should drive northwards and capture most of the VHs. My own core paratroopers were parked in the air for half of the scenario. I had no idea where to drop them :huh While beeing parked they got spotted by and enemy bomber and the airborne mortar got hit badly. I had to withdrew him. Still it gained 12 exp when beeing attacked by the enemy fighter.
The rest of the core paratroopers got eventually dropped in the east (yellow para-circle ;) ). They had only little impact... The best plan would have been to let them fight on the ground from the first turn on, together with my other ground forces.

While i grinded my way northwards the germans launched two large attacks in the north and center. I think it was the right descision to drop all aux paratroopers in the north. They were able to hold the line and by the end of the scenario they had destroyed all attackers and captured the 2 most northern VHs.
My recon fighter got hurt badly (1/10). I was lucky when a enemy MG shot at it in the same turn but failed to hit :phew

By the end of the scenario my fastest units had reached the southern end of the bridge of Arnhem and i had captured all VHs and got a BV. An infantry unit raised a leader.

Current Scenario: Operation Market Garden, BV

At HQ I buyed a polish flak and upgraded the weaker recon into a Chaffee, hopefully the recon will now better fight and gain experience.

My tactic was a Little bit different from Randowes tactic. I let the paras jump off in their Areas and used only the british and later polish paras to stop the attack of 2nd SS Panzer Corps. The normal attack of my core Units were similiar to Randowes. I sent some small aux Units from the XXX. Corps to capture fle flagged hexes in the west. There were only Little resistance. But I had other objectives for my core paras (blue lines). I flew them to the eastern airfield to capture it. In the first two turns it rained and there were no danger for them. The airfield had only the size of one hex, so I splited the paras. One flew to the northern airfield and captured it, as most of the Panzer Corps were already destroyed and it again rained. Later it helped the aux paras in Arnhem to destroy the rest of the Panzer Corps and the arriving 506. Heavy tank Batallion. The other ones used their Jeeps and conquered Venlo (it is easy to conquer from the east, but really difficult from the west). So I could capture every flag.
The german fighters were really Evil. There was a 6er Jet fighter, and not one of my fighters had a Chance again it. But I could destroy it, after I captured all airfields, because the Jet had only 2 shots and could not get new ammu..
The performance of the aux paras were really different. In Arnhem and Eindhoven they did a great Job and could conquer some VHs before the core Units arrived. But in Nijmegen the 82nd Airbourne Division failed in his objectives because the defending unit in the City got a leader and all assaults were blocked and the paras lost many SP by support fire from artillery. The black circles Show the VHs that was taken py the paras. At the end one flak unit and a barb wire were the only surviving german Units on the map.

The way Clemens played was not my Intention and so I think I will disembark the paras and also deploy two weaker Units to slower the core tanks more. In the North I will deploy an entranched infantry into Arnhem. This should make the Scenario a Little bit harder and more historical.

Current scenario: Battle of Aachen

Got a fighter proto, but reloaded to get none. To many protos make it to easy and render testing some kind of invalid.
At HQ i upgraded my para mortar into a Katyusha like truck mounted rocket launcher. Then i had to sell a attachment and bought another tank. Despite all the nations and all the choices i have only Shermans in my inventory :yes

This is the first battle which will take place on german soil. Our army has to break through or flank around the german Westwall fortification system and attack the city of Aachen, as well as Stolberg in the east.

I deployed my units in the north and south only to form two battlegroups. In the north i followed the road but got stuck in the overlaping enemy bunkers and forts. I then found another route around the northern end of the Westwall, where it reaches the river. Two of my core units had already been badly damaged and i had to leave them behind. Most of the units crossed the nearby river and drove to the southeast.

In the south i had no problems with bunkers. It seems the Westwall has a wide open gap here (or is non existent), which i used to approach the city of Aachen. The biggist figthing of the whole battle took part in the city and east of it.

The recon of my northern battlegroup had spooted a large enemy formation of around 15 infantry units comming from the northeast. I crossed the river back to the western shore and used the river as a natural barrier. The enemy counterattack got stopped at the bridges and i was able to encircle the infantries.
At this point of the battle i had cleared the south as well and had sent most of my southern units around the spring of the river. Some closed the pocked and some attacked Stolberg which was only lightly defended. I sent fast units out to take the other flagged hex and made a BV in turn 11/13.

Current Scenario: Battle of Aachen

I got a Flame-Tank proto and bought a Comet tank. I like the Comet and had waited that buying it would be possible.

My tactic was in the south similar to Randowe`s. But at the Westwall I attacked on a wide front with my infantry Units. I could destroy most of the bunkers but I did not attack more in the North, because at the road it is nearly impossible to break through. After I had destroyed most of the Westwall my infantry went to Aachen or stayed in the area North of Aachen. The aux infantry went in the North over the Bridge and captured Eschweiler and the airfield in the northeast. There was a armoured counterattack in the middle of the map. A Panther and a StuG attacked my Overwatch Sherman and I had to withdraw him with 3/10. After killing These Units I stopped the 20 infantry brigades at the river and destroy them. Meanwhile the infantry had cleared Aachen completely. I could capture stollberg in turn 13/13.
My Achilles did a great Job and get a nice leader (every leader for it is nice, because he did not lose efficient). My polish AD get a nice leader in a leader trigger which is hiden under a bunker.
I took two turns more and think this was because I fighted longer against the Westwall to gain experience with the infantry. Another factor can be the weather. In the first three turns it rained and there I could Need my air force.

I still have two leader more than Randowe. Also I still have more experience and could expand my lead through this scenario. 2/3 of the infantry gained more than 50 experience :cool

btw: On the wikipedia picture the Westwall ended on this point too. Maybe there was no fortifications because of the hills from the Ardennes? :huh
