Another map is finished :howdy

Number: 1589
Name: Rostov West (3K)
Location: Russia
Period: WWII
Map size: 3150;3000

Comment: mod of map 1533

----------
If anyone is interested to merge the new map 1589 with map 1533, you can easily do it. The XXL map would be 4770 pixel wide:

I swear, this was not planned :lol :lol So still two more maps by me this year. Then i am finished with my map plans.
This new map is for Dimitri's upcomming naval campaign:

Number: 1591
Name: Calais (3K)
Location: France
Period: WWII
Map size: 3150;3000

Comment: mod of map 50027

If mapfinder is broken, it is as it is. People still can download the map from the repository when playing. Once i am finished i try to upload to discord a map pack with all the 3K maps which i am using myself for map makers.

Haha no, this time i am serious :lol

Two more maps this year: Hel Peninsula and Dnipro. That's it. I swear :ihope
Next year two more maps: Finish the 40% done map of the German Ruhrgebiet and the other one will be Vyazma for a nice muddy autumn scenario.

I want to concentrate on campaigns and playing the game.

You can also send it to me (if you want) --> I will place these maps (1589 and 1591) on the Kowdara server, I also place mapX files there

I'm wondering about MF --> it's really needed for creators, not players
Maps are downloaded automatically from other places

Map Viewer (MF) is needed for people who will do something --> new scenarios, campaigns, maps...
If there is a problem with load/transfer, maybe access should be restricted - only for logged in users
And one more question - what parameters must the server meet to transfer such a browser (MF) with all its components to it?

I plan to upload all the 3K maps (+ one smaller map of Gdansk that is needed for the Weltkrieg campaign) and their mapx files to discord in one 300mb file. I also created new mapx files of the old ones, where the map number was missing. So overall there will be 86 maps and 86 mapx files.
I will upload it once the last map is finished in 2 months or so. I hope i can upload such large files to dropbox. It is also a safety measure to store the files this way. In case of flooding or something like this.

You can download the file with all maps and mapx then :cool

Indeed. Without maps you can't make new scenarios (unless you make your own...). This is the biggest limitation of PG2/OG compared to older "Panzer General" iterations. (Yes, you can make tiled maps in OG too, but you lose the visual aspect. Else you can as well push NATO symbol counters across a line map, hardcore wargamer style...)

If you mean what does a server need to be able to do the same job as Gilestiel's, the answer is "not much": It mostly needs a big(-ish) disk and bandwidth (transfer) allowance, free or at least very cheap. Else paying for it will get quite expensive on the long run.
Ah yes, and it needs you to be still interested enough in OG in 10 years' time to want to keep paying for it. :lol

Then you need a frontend (program) on that server, which allows people to easily find a map among the over thousand bearing cryptic names... Something which, when you upload a new map, automatically creates the description/download page, and the fitting thumbnails (small picture of the map). And is safe and bug-free enough so it won't be taken over by hackers in a couple months/weeks/days... (Which means somebody needs to make sure the server keeps getting patched and is kept up-to-date all over the years.)

Doesn't matter :)
Files .mapx are not needed to play and thus they are not hosted in OG's map's repo, only 50030.jpg and 50030_sizeCR.txt are hosted.

Of course, you don't need *.mapX files to play...
However, they are needed for potential creators of scenarios based on this map --> Are you saying that you have stopped saving mapx files in the zip file for download? :devil
http://www.open-general.com/install/OpenMapx.zip

You can download the mapx file individually on our server
Therefore, a file name is needed (in this case 50030_Kursk_Russia.mapx)

I remembered that names should be written in lower case for consistency... so it should be --> 50030_kursk_russia.mapx

Ah, sorry, didn't know that. I always use capitals for better legibility.

I also write out names, because I have difficulties remembering what some shortcut (occasionally misspellt) actually means, not to speak allowing them to be searchable. I'm pretty confident nobody here is still using Windows 3.x, so we don't really need to stick with the 8+3 DOS naming rule anymore... :lol
I also add the country, because I need to know without going to Gilestiel's which maps exist (= which scenarios are possible) for each country. I'm not randowe, so map availability will dictate the scenarios I'll be able to make (Kursk was an exception, I absolutely wanted to have a big tank battle, besides you can't have a realistic WWII branch without Kursk. IMHO.).

Yes, OpenMapx.zip is updated with version 03/04/2024 09:39 of 50030_kursk_russia.mapx (all lowercase) in open-general.com :yes

:clap for consistency and because not all servers are Windows ... so mixing case is not safe. :deal

I'm sorry to say but I don't update this zip file when i upload maps to open-general.com, it was surely Csaba who was doing that.

But I'll try to update and upload it from time time as it is a big file and I am having troubles uploading big files to some servers (it took me more than 20 minutes to upload the zip including the last map from None) :yikes

Please continue checking all missing mapx files in order to upload the .zip only once, when all of them are inncluded :notworthy

Yes, I will take care of it

I think we should talk much more - answer some questions - in the context of further development/maintenance of files for distribution --> to the broader PG/OG community
e.g. what about the project and the csaba database? Why can't you find all the files in one place - *map, *mapx? ....

:howdy

First, OpenMapx, i.e. the DBMAPX database

I added 118 files --> *.mapx with the structure - number_name.mapx
I made OpenMapx.zip
I put it on Google drive

https://drive.google.com/file/d/14ddsyr ... sp=sharing

The contents of this file
850 files with the structure - number_name.mapx (732 were already)
2 files with the structure - without nuneru_nazwa.mapx (former)
132 files with structure - tiled_name.mapx (former)
1 spreadsheet file (csv) (was)
The file weighs 52.8 MB --> OpenMapx.zip 5.68MB

The question is - does it make sense to continue doing it in this form --> when the entire project is unfinished?

Now the mapfiles from MF

The last mapx is missing here
1585_bydgoszcz.mapx
1586_jan_mayen.mapx
1590_moscow3k.mapx
1587_tirana.mapx
1589_rostovwest3k.mapx
1591_calais.mapx
1560_hel3k.mapx
1592_habbaniya.mapx
It writes that it was updated - as of December 2023 --> however, no mapx starting from September 2023

I made a file called map_file
I placed the elements of the OpenMapx file (which I created - above) + all the files I had - map/mapx

map_file.zip
https://drive.google.com/file/d/14fSG0x ... sp=sharing

The contents of this file
850 files with the structure - number_name.mapx
388 files with the structure - without number_name.mapx
132 files with the structure - tiled_name.mapx
1264 *map files
The file weighs 86.6 MB --> map_file.zip 8.69 MB
The file contains a total of 2634 map/mapx file elements

Thanks for doing such an outstanding work :bow

I'm sorry for so long delay but I've been working to fix my upload issues - which I think I've got to fix.

OpenMapX.zip is updated and available from www.open-general.com now, as effectively I could not commit the .mapx files since December 2023.

It includes 961 mapx files named as "number_name".mapx convention for all the images available at open-general.com map's repo, but none of the .map o mapx before the - nowadays - standard number-name naming convention.

Whenever I add a new map to the OG repo, I update a SVN local repo including the .mapx and then commit changes/additions to the server to update OpenMapX.zip

And when updating MapFinder I also updated MF's map_files.zip, but since I could not update MF I forgot to ask Gilestiel to do.
Now that I fixed my uploading issues, everything will ne updated properly again. MF's map_file-zip is updated too (including map for 5K maps).
The question is - does it make sense to continue doing it in this form --> when the entire project is unfinished?
Good point :yes

I doubt that any designer will download such big OpenMapX.zip file instead of searching MapFinder to find a suitable existing map.
So what is the point on updating, uploading and hosting that zip file ?

I doubt that any designer will download such big OpenMapX.zip file instead of searching MapFinder to find a suitable existing map.
I confirm. :grumpy
In the last (5+) years I have downloaded a big part, if not most of Gilestiel's, but when making a scenario I still visit there because its filter function answers my simple but essential question: "What maps do exist for the scenario I'm planning?" (like "Berlin 1945?").

Most maps (especially the old ones) have very esoteric names, so you'd be hard-pressed to know which one would suit you best. On my HD I've appended country names to the .map(x) file names so I can make a rudimentary search if needed, but nothing beats the filtering possibilities Gilestiel's offers.

Long story short: Scenario makers are indeed unlikely to need the complete archive of all maps.

So what is the point on updating, uploading and hosting that zip file ?
Backup/mirroring purposes?
For people wanting a local mirror of the map repository (which is quite vital to OG)? Remember, there was a thread about this recently.
