División Azul

A feature in maps and pictures

Part I

The spanish Blue Division fought alongside the Germans at the eastern front. The division arrived at Novgorod around September/Oktober 1941 and was withdrewn from the Leningrad front in autumn 1943. The germans numbered the Blue Division 250th Infantry-Division.

Below: 8.10.1941, the 250th Division is on march to their positions around Novgorod. Most of the Division is still travelling while parts arrived at the front and is about to take over positions from the 18th motorized Infantry-Divison and the 126th Infantry Division:

División Azul

A feature in maps and pictures

Part II

In Summer 1942 the Blue Division is ordered northwards to join the Leningrad siege.

Below: 31.10.1942, The Division is in transfer to the Leningrad front were the division will be part of the siege ring around the city. The position will be south of the city in the area of Pushkin, Kolpino and Krasny Bor. The map reads: Ma 250. span. That means: the mass of the 250th spanish division is in that position.

Below: Pushkin and its large palace, founded in 1710, was the imperial residence in the days of the Tsar until the red revolution. The palace' most famous and mytical room was the Amber room. The Amber room was looted by the germans, dismanteled and transfered to Königsberg/Kaliningrad were it disappeared. It is subject of speculation and conspiracy theories ever since. (picture from Wikipedia)

Below: 12.2.1943, time of the most famous battle of the Blue Divison, the Battle of Krazny Bor. The battle took place from 10-13 February 1943 south of Leningrad when the Red Army lanched an attack on the German and Spanish positions:

The Blue division was withdrewn from the front in october 1943. Overall around 45000 spanish soldiers fought with the blue division, rotating in and out.
There was also a small spanish fighter force, called the Blue Suqadron, Escuadrilla Azul. It was attached to Luftwaffe fighter wings Jagdgeschwader 27 and Jagdgeschwader 51. The Blue Squadron fought in central Russia and not alongside the Blue Division in the north.They operated Bf 109 and Fw 190 fighters.

Post by randowe » 2020-08-09 09:40, Sunday

While Major Heinz and me were talking about maps and future maps in the other thread, i thought i can post a list of maps that i have planned to make. After that i want to pretty much retire from map making and use the time i gain for campaigns and the creation of my LEGO Star Wars city :lol
So from next year on there will be only new maps in a case of absolute emergency! But that will be a very very rare event...

Most of the maps will be 3K. I also plan (in 2021) to create a campaign which uses 3K maps only and all battles will be pretty large.
Maps that are marked with a * will be enlarged versions of existing maps.
Murmansk is a special case. I started the map about 2 years ago and the coastline and rivers are perfectly fine and already finished. But over the years i found no way to design the landscape. Large proportions of the map would be covered with open stone. No mountains, just open rocky terrain. And i never found a way to cover half of the map with stony/rocky terrain. Don't know if i can make it :huh

Panama would be nice to have, but i will see how progress will be with all the other maps...

So here is the list:

Taganrog
Berdjansk
Sevastopol (3K)
Krasnodar/Caucasus I
Terek River/ Caucasus II
Radom (3K)
Ruhrgebiet (3K)

* Crimea East (3K)
* Kiev (3K)
* Baku (3K)
* Kursk East (3K)
* Kanev (3K)
* Dunkirk/Calais (3K)
* English Channel (3K)

??? Murmansk (3K) ???
??? Panama Canal (3K) ???

Thank you sympatyk :howdy
I downloaded your files and will try them when i make the Murmansk map.

Here you can see the rocky terrain north of Murmansk. There are no trees and many small lakes:

If you scroll to the left, you will find a base for nuclear submarines at the end of a large bay :secret :laugh

Drawing - map 64 - has been supplemented with a layer of stones.
Then I set this layer to a different transparency 45, 55, 65, 75, 85 %

Still other filters can be applied.....

Watch at 100% magnification - then you can see even better ...
All the fun - it took me 1 hour ... and it's all from this little drawing:

Thanks for your help, i will keep your "rocky" files for later.

I have also the problem that the Murmansk map is 3K and the rocky terrain is half of the map, so i also need some variety in the terrain. But i think Murmansk will le last map of my list i will make and i will postpone it untill winter :lol

Here you can see what i have done round about 2 years ago (I have to rework the coastal waterline, it should look like in the Kem and Shuya maps.

EDIT: The upper half of the landmass has to be rocky, the lower half of the landmass has to covered with tundra and some trees:

:howdy

It looks nice

Ok
When the time comes and you want to make this map, I will be happy to help.
I work in layers - this makes it easier to adjust - as needed
Laying out the terrain - in hexes - is the most important thing -> then you only need to put the puzzle pieces together ... :cool

In my latest version of German World Campaign, I used your Alexandria map to merge 2 scenarios, Alexandria and El Alamein. Is going to be fun to playtest it to ensure balance is correct.

Well, on GWC I am currently playing, Alexandria and El Alamein are merged, which meant I had to replace a scenario. I toyed with the idea of making a battle in Iraq, but no suitable maps, meant I had to use something else.
I created a scenario in your map of Scotland and Scapa Flow.
