it's a very special campaign with lots of rarely used settings, so skip the 50% as i'm not really familiar with most of them. there are settings what i don't like (e.g. selling protos disabled) and others which are my favorites (e.g. no-auto-refit), we'll see the overall impression at the end. there is two rules what i will break: i will reload anytime when i get a tb proto and i buy whatever i think is the most cost effective option, so it's not a real "weak hand" test as Owen designed the campaign

1. guadalajara - ltbv +1 tank proto

my core was tiny, and some of them has reduced current sp at the beginning, and the bottleneck style of the map combined with the restricted supply rules* were also scary, so i was afraid about my speed, but the turn limits are very grateful, i could won this scenario in bv-4 if i pushed it harder. at 75% i didn't accept the higher losses, but at 100% it's doable due to the cap

besides the new rules, the scenario is close enough to the original ssi version, no need to use special tactics. there is one important thing what players shouldn't miss: before bv expires, human players must refit a few unit to not it the cap

at hq i upgraded the pz ii to pz iii and bought another pz iii, a second recon, two 10,5cm lefh and :ihope this obsolete fighter will be enough against the polish airforce :p

ah, and purely BTW, no idea what to do with my 4-5 "works with OAK" older camps with green auto refit, other options, redesigned scens etc. as it is dead, i'd say :) nothing is finished anyway so not big deal...

not really question for you, just mention. guess i'll wander and wonder around for a few years more thinking what to do with it... ;

2. mława - ltbv (could be bv-4)

deployed 2-2 tanks, arties and 1-1 recon, inf in the middle of the map, the rest were deployed around the sh. the central bg +2 aux cav went for the eastern-central vh, the rest for the western-central, later the faster units joined the eastern bg, 4-5 slower units took the southern vh + the airfield

the scenario is improved compared to the original: poles actually moved and counterattacked my weakest positions several times. :yes

despite of refiting the free core, i hit the cap by 40 or so pp. so instead of buying more units (esp. a 4th arty), upgraded my fighter. and i still have cca. 900pp for in-scenario refit

3. suomussalmi - ltbv

met two overwatch tanks, fortunately there were enough finnish auxes to kill them inside the city. the southern ai recon bypassed the front and attacked my troops from behind (from south-west) around gt-4, after killing it, ai was almost the same passive as in pg2

cap is still close, so i os-ed free core instead of buying that 4th gun :sigh

edit: i used only elite replacement during / after the scenario, so far i "swim" in the burnable prestige

4. lillehammer - ltbv

i really missed that 4th gun, and wasted too much turns to break through the initial viking defense lines, so when i got some cash i bought a fj inf. i never saw the $var disable atp when weather is bad, but it worked fine, and forced my para to drop. fortunately behind tha allied lines, and this temporal unit helped a lot to achieve a very last turn bv

now i have enough cash for a :monster gun :yeah otoh, i never played sedan with such a tiny core :yikes

5. sedan - ltv (bv+1) +3 leaders

it was too hard for me, maybe a Gixian-style army consisting of more cheaper units would be more effective here, but i don't like a core like that, especially not in a no-auto-refit campaign (maintaining cheaper and weaker units can be more expensive at the end due to the higher losses). nevermind, i was close to get a bv, only the cleared rethel was in french hands at the end of gt-12, and i could actually take it by a recon, but i had 900pp to burn and lots of damaged free core. as proto is limited in this campaign, i decided to wait another turn and refit my core (using elite replacement for non-free core is also a money saver in this campaign)

i keep the 4th tank, 3rd recon what i bought during the scenario, but sell the cheap recons, and buy a spad instead + upgrade inf and overstrengthen free core units

6. dunkirk - ltv (bv+1), intentionally +3 leaders ( :bullhorn one edited)

i could win this with a comfortable ltbv, but windsor 1940 is not my cup of tea. the scenario worked fine, a.i. had 21 msu, of which 12 should have escaped, but only 6 could, and when i killed 10th msu and a.i. ad no more chance winning by escaping msu, they turned back and fought against me. idk it's a.i. 3.0 or an older thing, but i like it! :yes :clap

this time i pushed hard, and suffered higher losses, but still lost 200pp due to the cap. of curse, buying an expensive 2nd fighter can be a reason behind it ;)

my range-6 gun picked up a rec.move leader, what i replaced in suite, this leader for a :monster gun is simply too powerful and would ruin my playtest

now i upgraded all obsolete pz iii and the last regular + os-ed all free core up to max, and still saved 200pp. my new fighter surely will need it against raf

7. tobruk #1 - ltv (mandatory)

ok, there is one ting what i absolutely don't like: despite of the standard resupply is disabled and only cities and depot units allow the resupply, the terrain still affects the resupply, so a unit standing on a sand hex, can't be resupplied near a depot unit! :ohno

the battle was rather easy with my core could be v-2 (bv is disabled), but lost a few hundred bucks thanks to the harsh resupply rules

now i'm in a trouble, as i simply can't use the available pp, i will waste 5-700pp. now i miss some suicide units like v-1, v-2, goliath, etc. in basekorp :sigh so just os-ed everything and bought a 5th gun

8. tobruk #2 - ltv (mandatory, could be v-2)

a 15sp messer is a butcher of the contemporary spitfires :yeah my range-7 gun cleared the path to tobruk, the rest was a walk in the park (yes, my core is much stronger than it should be by following Owen's weak hand rule). i couldn't refit too much units (got only 3 depots + desert + fully os-ed core), so i missed 1000pp

i decided to do an unnecessary and expensive upgrade: bf 109 emil to friedrich tropical, and os-ed again heavily. i was thinking about buying submarines, but its speed is doomed in openak :whatever

9. malta - ltbv +1 leader and a towed at proto (after 2 reloads)

this was when i gave up Owen's blitzkrieg a few years before, and my opinion hasn't changed yet: openak is one of the worst efile for naval battles. moreover: now the three strongest italian ships are msu what i should keep alive. fortunately, i got four subs. they saved the battle: they sank all allied ships in the south-west, and halted the north-western allied fleet (consisting of 3 or 4 destroyers) long enough to hide my long range gun, which cleared the western vh, while the maller guns cleared the central vh. in the last turn i refit almost everything (remember: elite replacement for non-free units can save money!). all in all, this time the naval battle was less scary, and i can move on

got a tb proto twice, the third reload gave me a moderate at gun (btw. the "friendly units block lof" makes all range-2 towed guns pretty useless)

upgraded the second fighter (init=6 was tempting, and i swim in burnable prestige), the pz iv to a better model, and os-ed heavily

pushed my core hard and got an easy bv, and still missed 1100pp after refitting my core. this scenario was pretty ssi-style, and this time ai was very passive (maybe it had no chance or enough firepower to counterattack)

made another unnecessary upgrade: the monster gun to a bigger monster, and one 10,5cm to a 15cm + os-ed heavily

11. novgorod - ltbv

i don't understand this scenario. in general, most (if not all) scenarios have expanded bv limits by 1-2 turn(s) in this campaign, which is reasonable, because the resupply is more complicated. and a scenario, like staraya russa, with restricted pathes, bottlenecks, can be even harder. but this scenario has a reduced bv limits by 3 turns :dunno fortunately, i was always the master of this scenario, so i could get a very last turn bv, but it wasn't easy at all, and with a less powerful core what i should have here according the rules, idk how the bv would be possible

anyway, the scenario is also very ssi-like, the soviet units in the most western isthmus did nothing, as always. maybe they should get a retreat order to cut my supply lines :idea

i also hit the cap again, and this time i decided to let it go, and purchased two 15cm sfh and upgraded another one. this excellent czech gun is available only for a short period in openak. i also upgraded the 7,5cm pak to a stug, because it gathers exp too slowly

12. volokalamsk - ltbv

another ssi-like scenario, where a.i. was too passive (iirc it had zero recon, which is a big mistake, if you want to use the improved features of the new 3.0 a.i.), i could have won it bv-3

the weather was mostly bad, so i bought two temporal recon planes, they were very handy, as my guns could move into excellent positions w/o being spotted

HOWEVER! i hate the f/f of openak furiously, i couldn't express it how much. the fw 190 available in fall 1941 is not available on the eastern front :censored :irate :mad the only good news is that its init stat is also rotten :whatever :lol so i should wait for winter storm to have a good fighter

i still think my core is too tiny, i wish i had two more tanks and a 3rd fighter. unfortunately, the promised "free gifts" instead of the protos never occured so far :sigh

ussr has too powerful airforce here, the ad gun is a bad joke against il-10 bomber. and i REALLY wanted to build an airforce (=only fighters, as i consider the tb class a rubish waste of money), but the cap is too low in this campaign, and the core i have is absolutely not the core what i'd like. i accept when designers force me to try new things, but i'm simply less and less comfortable with the cap of this campaign, and playing it at higher prestige level wouldn't help, the cap is a hard fact what players can't ignore, so i quit, it's simply not fun to continue

to be fair: everything else is very interesting and promising. at first i wasn't sure about a few settings, but they work, and i appreciate the careful and thorough design, these rarely used settings really work and tey give a new perspective. so if you like the challenge, i recommend to try this campaign

Owen, if you read this, i'd reconsider to increase the cap by 20% at least. these f*king fighters are too expensive in openak, and two fighters after the 10th scenario make an inadequate airforce, that's the truth. i cannot imagine how somebody can win savannah, where 5 os-ed fighters are usually necessary to cover the landing

I very much appreciate the playtest. I realize I'm a little slow responding here, but I don't tend to follow the forums much. I will try to go through them in detail. You are correct, you simply cannot manage more than a few air units, or you run out of $$. That was intentional. Novgorod is always a pita. If you are complaining about the Russian airforce, I shudder to think how you would handle the Allied air forces when you hit the shores of the U.S. It gets really messy there... :)

The "free gifts" that you were complaining about missing, you do get an extra core fighter unit to start the campaign, and if you go through Windsor 1940 you will get a "free" core Fw 190A, as well as a bonus leader you can put on any unit that moves onto the specified objective hex. I typically do that with an AA unit, as those units are very difficult to get leaders on, and an AA unit with a leader is a very nice thing to have.

But yes, one of my specific design objectives was to reward BV's and make V's and TV's a worse option, so if you go the North Africa route, you will not get the free prezzies...

There is one note I'd like to make. Ivjtn suggested that prestige be increased by 20%. This campaign was designed and play tested at 100/100, and that is in the readme. Ivjtn play tested this at 75/100. Raising that to 100/100 would cover the 20% increase and be at the settings the campaign is designed to be played at. To put it another way, if you voluntarily choose to play at a higher level of difficulty than the campaign was designed to be played at, I'm not sure that your complaint that the campaign is too difficult is all that valid...

A lot of effort was put into balancing the prestige available, and the caps, in this campaign. I suspect it is very sensitive to changes in prestige levels. You should notice a pretty huge difference between 100/100 and 75/100 in terms of overall difficulty. If you want to mess around with prestige levels, I would suggest you make small adjustments, not big ones, at least until you have a good understanding of the dance between the prestige available and the necessity of upgrading and reinforcing units.

Regarding "updated campaign version" (or as in this case "full campaign rework" ) and "not enough prestige".

I also once updated/reworked a campaign from a low-cost to a mid/high-cost efile, however didn't increse the prestige in a similar extend, with the intention to increase difficult. A playtester, who knew the original campaign version, was then also confused at first that (even @100% ) couldn't field as many units as original.
In other words "the expectations towards the campaign was not met".
This is of course unfortunate, but "working as intended".

Imho, there is no need to "fix" the campaign. Once players understand this is just the way the difficulty is set, and if interested in a higher difficulty, players will enjoy (or suffer :devil ) through the campaign :)

There are a few things I attempted to "fix" when I reworked this campaign, without creating a completely new campaign. One of those things was that players almost always would deliberately refuse a BV at Dunkirk so they could avoid the first Windsor and go through the North Africa campaign. To incentivise the early Windsor scenario not only is there a very good chance you will get a good prototype at the start of the scenario, by design, but you will also get a free prototype Fw 190A-1 unit. On top of that units start with 50 free xp, and there is a free leader trigger which you can assign to any unit you wish when you take the central southern objective.

Not only that, but if you go through the North Africa campaign there are no BV's available, and no prototypes. You will still gain the advantage of more unit experience that way, and what I think is a fun battle at Malta, no offence intended Ivjtn, but in my opinion that battle with the naval units isn't that difficult, and it is fun.

One other major change is that there are chances for prototypes only in a few scenarios. Those are scenarios where there are very good prototypes available, and if you are putting together any number of BV's a very good chance that you will get one. In my opinion the chance that you could potentially have as many as a dozen extra core units was extremely unbalanced.

But ultimately this campaign is now all about prestige management. You have to pay for reinforcements between scenarios. There is no auto reinforcement, and I have deliberately kept the prestige available, along with the caps, very tight. This campaign now requires you to manage prestige, and casualties, effectively. If you don't, you will very likely not finish the campaign successfully.

Yes, the campaign was realatively short, but due to its low difficulty players could get lots of protos - even further decreasing difficutly.

This is what i meant with "expectations not met": when people think about "Blitzkrieg" or BK-style campaigns, they think about fast+easy wins, because "it has always been that way" - so if they overlook the mentioning of difficulty in the campaign briefing, it leads to nasty surprises.

I basically worked on this campaign for three reasons. The first reason was that Open General, at it's heart, is a mod of Panzer General II and I felt that it was important that there be a playable version of the orginal PG2 campaign available for one of the more popular efiles. I enjoy the AK efile, so I chose that one, there was also a PG2 version of the campaign modded for the AK efile which was mostly unplayable.

The second reason was for myself. I'm pretty OCD and I love the original Blitzkrieg campaign. I also love Open General and all the goodies that come with it. For my own enjoyment I wanted a version of the original Blitzkrieg campaign that was playable with all the bells and whistles that come with Open General. It had to be challenging because I wanted it to have a lot of replay value.

The third reason was to learn campaign design.

Maybe I'm the only one who thinks so, but I think I achieved all three of those goals with this version of this campaign. I didn't with any of my earlier attempts, in part because I'm a slow learner and I didn't really figure out how prestige worked until fairly recently. I've left the earlier version of my mod of this campaign available but it doesn't meet either of the first two criteria.

Because I hadn't figured out how prestige worked until I developed this last version, I don't consider that first version to be playable. I only allowed it to be kept up because apparently there are some people who have played it and enjoyed it, but it is pretty critically flawed, in my opinion. In this latest version the prestige caps and rewards actually make some kind of sense, you might disagree with them, but they do make sense on some level. :)

Part of what made that original SSI Blitzkrieg special was that, way back when, it seemed like each person had a scenario or two that would ball them up. But there are a few that most agree on as being extremely difficult. For me the list was:

Lillehammer
Windsor '40 - we agree
Novgorod

Then if I ever made it that far, Savannah and Oak Ridge.

I discovered years later that Crete was indeed, a horror show.

I've put a lot of work in this campaign into making all of those scenarios playable, and I hope, fun. Windsor '40 is still a pita, but it can be beaten. Novgorod is still a pita but it can be beaten. The same can be said for Crete, and it is the other scenario that I have added a fighter prototype to. I think it is also an Fw 190A-1. Admittedly the Fw 190A-1 in the AK efile isn't a particularly great fighter unit, but it has high prestige value and can easily be exchanged for something more useful.

Savannah and Oak Ridge are still very, very tough. But they are "The Boss" scenarios in this campaign, and if you make it that far, expect a dog fight, or lots of dog fights, as the case may be... ;)

The scenarios that haven't been play tested as well as they should have been are the "Defending the Reich" scenarios. Unfortunately I just ran out of motivation. I have worked on them, and I have tried to make them playable and fun, but they are the least well tested of all the scenarios and are kinda at that "cross your fingers and hope for the best stage". I can't promise they aren't seriously flawed.

The trick with Malta, btw, is to use your capital ships to deal with the enemy destroyers, and destroy the enemy caps with your subs. Take the final objectives with armoured units and use your navy to soften the defences. I won't move "soft" units much past halfway in the direction of the final objective. It's not an incredibly difficult scenario, but there is a "better way" to handle it, and if you don't use that better way, you may have a very difficult time.

edit: You need to hold your caps back early in the scenario and draw out the destroyers with your subs, then eliminate the destroyers with your caps before they destroy your subs.

I'm considering adding a liberator leader to the starting recon unit. That would certainly fix any issues with not enough prestige. Would that be too much?

What I like about the idea of adding a liberator leader to the recon unit is it evens out the playing experience across replays. Getting a liberator leader on a unit like a recon unit really changes the way the whole campaign plays. So if you just add one at the beginning of the campaign, it makes it a little less random.

What I don't like about that is that it makes a lot of tactical decisions for the player. If you want to take advantage of the liberator leader it changes the way you play a scenario. It also ruins that first scenario for head to head play—not that that is necessarily going to be a big consideration seeing as I would be surprised if anyone would actually use that scenario for head to head play...

I don't know the campaign's prestige management, but generally speaking (and ignoring prestige cap):
Liberator, in particular on a recon unit, can easily increase the presitige output of a scenario by 50%. So
@100 -> 150%
@75 -> 110-115%
@50 -> 75%
Only @20% difficulty the Liberators usefulness has decreased a lot by diminishing returns, but it still is worth it to try grabbing flags with it.

IMHO, it is not about "Liberator changes how a campaign is played", but rather "Liberator changes the campaign's actual difficulty lvl".

If you really want the player to have more prestige, just add some turn prestige or reactivate flags that you have removed/set to 0.
This way, there is no fixed leader = more randomness, and the difficulty lvls don't get modified by the Liberator.
