I just thought at first that the map could run alongside the map no. 279, which is called "Russian Plains" and is sorted under Russia. So the maps are easier to find. But i guess, scenario makers will know all maps anyway haha :lol

EDIT: i forgot to mention that map no. 279 has no names too.

Yes, it is more correct now :yes My intention was just that the two maps should be next to each other, be it Russia or Fictional.
My map is basically a bigger version of 279 with a river added. 279 itself is a mirrored version of map no. 0, but without rivers.
Anyway, everything is fine now :cool

Indeed, it is changed now

It was that way because we thought that only the PNG could be downloaded, but it was a not true.
Then Sympatyk proved that, uploading only the JPG to MapFinder, the size for 50k maps is always smaller than for 30k maps including a PNG + JPG.

For example 50027 needs only 2.582.298 bytes for the JPG, while 1229 requires 3.203.663 bytes for the PNG, plus 2.018.007 bytes for the JPG, which means double the size in disk for a shorter map.

Actually, he never sends the png now, it sends only the jpg with a better quality, saving size in MapFinder either for 30/50k maps, which is much better, in my opinion.

Re: MAPS: Post information about new maps here please

Posted: 2020-09-04 12:41, Friday
by randowe
But now the new map 50027 is the only "XXL" map at mapfinder :huh

As far as i remember 500XX maps, so called XXL, bigger than 3150x3000 pixel, are only uploaded to open-general.com.
All XXL maps can be found at http://www.open-general.com/mapxs.php?o ... a=&omu=xxl
Thats why i included only the jpg file and left out the iframe.txt in my recent mail.

Maybe Csaba can help us out?

jpg files have more colors, but png has still a much better quality in my opinion. At least at a practicable % jpg quality ratio.
I think sympatyk had problems with the colors in his unique map style when maps get converted, but classic style maps look better as png. Thats why i use only png files when it comes to OG maps, be it playing or designing :dunno

If 50027 stays at mapfinder the country should please be changed to France too :o

EDIT: sympatyk's maps 50025, 50026 and 50028 can't be found at open-general.com?

Hi Clemens

You are right! - your 50027 map was the only 50k allocated in MapFinder, so I've deleted.

I don't know why I thought that 50k maps could be uploaded to MapFinder when the size of the JPG is small enough :bonk and I apologize for such mistake.

Probably the reason is because the last time I checked the size of all the PNG files hosted at MapFinder, I found:
* Note I use MiBytes instead of MegaBytes cause I use the size in bytes allocated in disk, which is easier to check with FileZilla or similar.

Top png sizes:
The biggest is 827 having 7,5 MiBytes and 1193 having 6 MiBytes (I'll probably try to optimize its size)
4 png are bigger than 5,5 MiBytes
11 png are bigger than 5 MiBytes
31 png are bigger than 4 MiBytes
25 png are between 3,5 and 4 MiBytes
35 png are between 3 and 3,5 MiBytes

Top 50k jpg sizes:
The biggest is 50028 having 6,3 MiBytes , and there are 4 having more than 6 MiBytes
5 are bigger than 5,5 MiBytes
8 are bigger than 5 MiBytes
13 are more than 4 MiBytes
The smaller is 50003 having less than 2 MiBytes,

So the sizes are not that different than I thought. :huh
Obviously we are comparing png sizes with jpg sizes, but hosting only jpg files for 50k maps could be probably possible is the mapmakers refrain, as to keep within an affordable size, I think :dunno

No need to apologize. Everything is perfectly fine :howdy
I was just a bit confused because 50027 was the only XXL map at mapfinder.

(EDIT: i also don't want to tie on maps uploaded with legendary Santiago Fuertes because of a XXL map which is in a wrong place :lol :lol )

What i have learned since i make maps is, that the file size is pretty much determined by the colors used in a picture. Different colors have different bit costs. So far i only learned that blue has very low bit costs, thats why a XXL which is full of ocean can be very small in file size compared to a normal sized map which contains land only.

I am not sure which colors have the highest bit costs. When i put all my 3150x3000 maps in one folder, the ones with the biggest file size have a lot of green land mass.
Biggest is map 1055.png with a file size of 5,12MB, which has no ocean and is very green.
Whereas map 1443.png is mostly covered by blue ocean and has 1,2MB only.

Map 1193 - all files together - png, jpg, shp, S16 -> are ~ 6.5 MB
png file is 2.13 MB
http://www.opengeneral.pl/sympatyk/ma1193.jpg

All 500xx.jpg maps are on the server opengeneral.pl

Clemens
If you provide a link to the graphics and mapX - I will put map 50027 there

The size of the map depends on the number of colors and on the variety of colors in adjacent pixels
The compression algorithm analyzes 2x2 or 3x3 pixel squares
The ocean is mostly homogeneous - therefore it takes up fewer MBits
