AK campaign

Post by Urica » 2021-02-23 17:39, Tuesday

Hello,

This evening, while I was searching for an old file in a nearly forgotten pendrive, I found the files of that collaborative campaign that four of us tried to make in 2018, before we moved to this new forum. Since Patrick disappeared, the plan went south, and we all forgot about it.

I think that resurrecting the plan could be a good idea. It was a short campaign (10 scenarios), and four of them were already finished. We even had an "Alpenkorps" faction created in the KG efile!

The problem is that I've lost the campaign path that we had intended, and I can't even remember who had made each scenario. I recall that Jurgen made Col di Lana, I made Serbia, Spasteur did Fort Vaux and Patrick had nearly completed Roterturm Pass, but I might be wrong.

Does anyone know about the campaign path ant the authors of the different scenarios? And, supposing we can find it, is anyone interested in making any of the 6 remaining scenarios? If no one is, I guess that I could finish the campaign myself, but it would be a pit, since it started as a collective effort.

=======================================================
Edit (Jurgen) - Inserted here so that 2 people can edit the information.

1. Cole di Lana * ( 4 Jul 1915) - Jurgen

2. Serbia * (11 Nov 1915) - Luis

3. Vaux * (31 May 1916) - Spasteur

4. Roterturm * (25 Sep 1916) - Patrick

5. "Ramnicu Sarat" (or "Rimnicul Serat" as it is named in my German sources), also called "Christmas Battle in the Carpathians" - Romania, December 1916
Patrick

6. Marasesti - Romania, August 1917 - Luis

7. Caporetto - Italy, October 1917 - Luis

8. Monte Grappa - Italy, November 1917 - Luis

9. Assault on Mount Kemmel - Flanders, April 1918 - REDrake - map 1362?

10. Epéhy - France, September 1918 - Jurgen - map 1450

Count me in. Unfortunately I did not make a copy of the campaign path :( :bonk I think Patrick had a book on the Alpenkorps. Have you tried contacting him? If not, I can try.

So this is what we are starting with:

CAM title : 1915-18 DAS DEUTSCHE ALPENKORPS

#00 AK00ColediLana * ( 4 Jul 1915) - Jurgen
#01 AK01Serbia * (11 Nov 1915) - Luis
#02 AK02Vaux * (31 May 1916) - Spasteur
#03 AK03Roterturm * (25 Sep 1916) - Patrick

I remember there was a scenario at the Piave front and an AK attack on Monte Tomba and i was supposed to do the map for Spasteur. And for another scenario that i don't remember. But i have deleted all my source material and campaign files a long time ago since there was never any progress and nowadays i have no interest anymore in the maps, sorry.
I'll see if i can find some info on the battles.

EDIT: I hope you can contact Patrick and that he is still there. It was a big blow when he disappeared from JP's. I remember his Pike & Shot efile so well. He showed some nice pictures of Polish Winged Hussars and flamboyant pirates. But the efile never got released.

Those are bad news, but it seems that your decision is made, so I won't insist.

Wonderdoctor wrote Patrick yesterday, and we've received a message from him this evening. He doesn't keep the campaign path, either, but he's given us enough clues to rebuild it. I think that we can make it. Of course, all help will be welcome.

Understandable after all these years. But if you would ever change your mind, our arms will be wide open :)

Also: I added the names of the 6 'missing' scenarios to the list above. Anyone remember who was going to do what scenario?

Yes, that is good to know!

Epehy was your scenario Doc. I made the map for it (no. 1459)and i remember we were talking about the airfield in the northeast.

There is also my map of Armentieres (France) with Mount Kemmel, which i made for the ILS NE PASSERONT PAS campaign. It may fit here as well :huh

Then there is this book/pdf http://www.comroestudios.com/StanHanna/ There were some good maps about Monte Tomba (was it next to Grappa? have to look into it again). See the "illustrations" folders. I was really impressed by Monte Tomba mountain, when i was looking at some photos.

But i am sorry, nowadays i can't contribute to the AK campaign. I want to get done with my maps by the end of April and then take a break from map making until winter and concentrate on my Big Blitz and Kriegsmarine campaigns.

Yes wonderful map. Thank you. I do remember now. Next thing to do is finding back the notes I made for this battle.

What I did find already in a 2006 mail from Patrick is his description of the battle:
I am especially looking forward for creating the "Battle of Epehy" as the grand finale of the Alpenkorps campaign. Here, in September 1918, the Alpenkorps had their desperate last stand against the advancing allied troops - totally outnumbered (some Alpenkorps battalions being reduced to only 40 men) and facing enemy tanks and total allied air superiority. After this battle - also called "the hell of Epehy" by the survivors - the remnants of the Alpenkorps were sent back to Serbia for the rest of the war.

I see i had a typo within the map number. It is 1450 :bonk Of course all credits go to Patrick, who made map 455, which i just enlarged to the east.

I wish you guys good lock with the project. Maybe you can motivate Spasteur for a scenario or two :ihope

I gathered some good references when I made the Austrian campaign. I could make or finish the scenarios that take place in Romania and Italy.

Hopefully, we'll need just one new map (Grappa). Tolyi and I used the map 336 for Marasesti. It's not great, but it could be good enough.

9. Assault on Mount Kemmel - Flanders, April 1918 - map 1362? is not taken yet. You can make this scenario if you want to. Unless you really want the 10th (final) scenario. Then we switch.

In the 4th scenario (Roterturm), Hermannstadt (the VH in the hands of the Austro-Hungarians) is a VH for player 1 but not for player 2. Should it be a VH for both players? Why? I playtested the scenario, captured one Romenian VH after which they recaptured it and I lost the scenario.

Things have improved a lot. We have finished 6 scenarios, including Ramnicu Sarat and Marasesti. Four to go.

The next one is Caporetto. I did sometging similar for "Weltkrieg", so I could make that one, too.

Please do. A question I have for Mark: you turned a potentially super big haevy on the stomach Vaux into an enjoyable light dish already, but are there other scenarios you would like to make?
I would like to do one more. Preferably 10, but could do 9 instead if someone else is eying 10.

Great! I've sent you the campaign files.

I think that we included this battle, from the French point of view, when we made "Ils ne passeront pas". It's worth checking it.

I started with Epéhy a while ago. By now, all German units are on the map. OoB for Entente is researched. So I should be able to finish the scenario not much time after we get Assault on Mount Kemmel for playtesting.

It's been quite a while since REDrake volunteered to make the Kemmelberg scenario, but he hasn't posted anything since May.

I'm not sure about what to do next. Should we keep on waiting? Anyone else is interested in designing this scenario?

Maybe send him a PM? And in case he does not answer or has given up on making the scenario, look for someone else to make it?

I did it, in June, too. He answered quickly, and told me that he was blocked at that time, for personal reasons, but that he would try to start working on the scenario, in two weeks. But that was more than four months ago...

If no one else joins the project, I'll try to make the scenario myself. I'd like to see this campaign done.

UPDATE: mail sent, with the new scenario. If it's OK, only Epehy would be left.
