1 The Congo - Arab war. Taking of Nyangwe , #0 , Brilliant Victory

It's good as a starting scenario. Just moving forward and assaulting the Arab forts. It can be a little tricky if the player attacks without any care for his askaris, but that's it.It was nice to use Zanzibar as the enemy.

2 The Madhist War - Securing the Lado Enclave. , #1 , Brilliant Victory

Very fun battle. The player must buy some cheap askari units, and then march through the mountains and the jungle until he reaches the Mahdist base. Along the way there are multiple attacks from enemy tribes and mad Sudanese, and the Belgian column will suffer a lot of damage. The player will have to be very careful if he doesn't want to risk losing some core units.

I played the scenario twice. The first time I advanced so fast that I found some teleporting Mahdists in Bedden, and I won the scenario four turns before the BV limit. I lost a couple of askaris along the way (144 pps. Painful, but still not a tragedy).

I was ready to recommend an adjustment of the turn limits, but then I played again, just in case. This time I tried to avoid any unnecessary losses, and it was a completely different experience. I didn't lose any units (although some of them were pretty damaged when the scenario ended), but this time I had a last turn BV. I didn't find any strange moving enemies, either.

So, overall, seeing what happened on my second run, I think that the scenario is well balanced. I wouldn't change anything. It's a great colonial battle, and I think that I'll miss those offensives in the jungle when the Great War starts.

It's a great colonial battle, and I think that I'll miss those offensives in the jungle when the Great War starts.

Thanks for making us include 2 of these Congo Free State scenarios instead of only one.
I found some teleporting Mahdists in Bedden
Good find. I changed them to appear 2 turns earlier - cannot make them be there from the start because they will dig in too much.

Before the scenario starts, the core is reinforced with 3 infantry units. I sold all my colonial askaris and bought two cheap artilleries. They gave me a recon proto, too.

Both central VHs fell pretty soon. It was impossible to defend them. My core and the auxiliary infantry defended the southern VH while the Belgian cavalry defended the west. I kept fighting in the south and, in the meantime, the cavalry won the day in the west and then counterattacked towards the center, retaking Halen one turn before the end. My core won a lot of experience and killes many units, so everything was OK.

4 The Battle of St.Margriete-Houtem , #3 , Brilliant Victory

First of all, I made a mistake when I made the Halen scenario. The three infantries that joined the core at the HQ in Halen (396 pps in total) behave as bought units, not as protos, so in this fourth battle we're over the cap. I couldn't buy any new units.

I sent my core to the east with some cavalry support, while most auxiliaries defended the central VH, and a handful od units watched the west.

In the east the battle was hard, but I finally the core defeated the Germans, counterattacked, and took the enemy VH in the last turn. Just in time, because in the centre and the west the German artillery fire was wiping the Belgian auxiliaries out, and they couldn't defend the river for much longer.

I lost quite a lot of units (a total of eight) and, although I finally had a BV, I doubt that I could have achieved it without my recon proto. Under normal circumstances, a V would be the most likely result here.

Good scenario. Tough, lethal, but still winnable. I liked it a lot.

Will the battle become too easy if I correct my mistake at Halen and make the core infantries behave as protos? I don't think so. 396 is a small amount of prestige. Just enough for an extra artillery, or a cavalry/ infantry or MG/ infantry combo. Certainly not too powerful. It shouldn't unbalance St.Margriete-Houtem.

Do it. :yes And please check if we then need to slightly lower the cap, or keep it at the present number.

5 Antwerp - The First Exit , #4 , Brilliant Victory

Now that the cap issue is solved, I could buy one MG and one "tank" cavalry. My core fought in the centre of the map, while the auxiliaries secured both flanks. In the end, all the Belgians joined in Grimbergen, a name that, before this campaign, was familiar to me only for the beer.

I still have some doubts about the design:

- In the west the auxiliaries had a hard time against the Germans. Maybe I could give a couple of them some extra experience.
- In the east the opposite thing happens. It seems that there are a few too many auxiliaries. I could disband a couple of them.
- There is a strange thing that I noticed in Halen, too. The Germans are refitting some of their damaged units, although they aren't receiving any turn pps. There is something that I'm missing, but I can't figure out what it is.

That must be prestige carried over from the previous scenario. In case it is too much - and I think it is - please decrrease the Centrals turn prestige which is 10pp/turmn in Lado Enclave and 60pp/turn in Sint-Margriete Houtem. The 60 can probably be lowered to 30. I made that way too high - sorry. I will reduce the saved German pp in the save game by 600 (20turns*30pp/turn) to represent that change.

6 Antwerp: Von Beseler's Mistake , #5 , Brilliant Victory

This time I bought one new infantry (with trucks). I also sold my MG and bought it again, but this time with trucks instead of wagons. It's cheaper than upgrading.

The battle is fast and deadly, in a corner of the map. There is no time to do a careful planning. Just stop the Germans, counterattack and take the VHs. That's it. It's good to see that this kind of battles can be played even in WWI campaigns.

I needed 12 turns to win the scenario. The victory limits are 14/18/22, so maybe they could be reduced to 13/17/21.

Now, what should be the next step? The second sortie could be fun. On the other hand, it could also be too similar to the previous Antwerp scenarios. I'm not really sure, but I think it's worth trying. In the next days I'll study a little bit about the battle and then I'll start the design. Let's see where it takes.

I have even more doubts regarding the third sortie and the final German assault. Too much enemy heavy artillery could lead to some "unfair" core losses. That wouldn't be fun. maybe it could be better to skip that one.

I needed 12 turns to win the scenario. The victory limits are 14/18/22, so maybe they could be reduced to 13/17/21.

Now, what should be the next step? The second sortie could be fun. On the other hand, it could also be too similar to the previous Antwerp scenarios. I'm not really sure, but I think it's worth trying. In the next days I'll study a little bit about the battle and then I'll start the design. Let's see where it takes.

I have even more doubts regarding the third sortie and the final German assault. Too much enemy heavy artillery could lead to some "unfair" core losses. That wouldn't be fun. maybe it could be better to skip that one.
All true + probably similar reasons why we decided to skip Liege.
The prestige cap does not fit the previous scenario. The victory bonuses are thus all obsolete.
My mistake - I modified the cap at the start arther than the one at the end of the scenario (set it for this scenario rather than the next one). This and the turn limits adjusted in a new zip sent to Luis.

7 Antwerp - The Second Exit , #6 , Brilliant Victory

I bought a second heavy cavalry, which was nearly destroyed during the scenario and didn't have the opportunity to succeed.

The scenario is quite easy if the Belgians outflank the Germans.

In the east that was easy to do. The cavalry division and some infantry had a placid journey to Leuven. In the centre and the west it was more tricky. I split my core and the auxiliaries, and I chose to cross the canal at two different points, as far from the German VHs (and the German artillery fire) as I could. After crossing the canal I went south for a while, before turning east and west and attacking the German rear. At the same time they were executing a weak counterattack and even took one of my VHs, but that just delayed me a bit. Once that I had outflanked them, they didn't have a chance.

8 Albert's stand at the Yzer , #7 , Brilliant Victory

This was a huge battle. I knew that a good defence would be necessary, so I bought another artillery, deployed my core in the centre, and hoped for the best. I retreated from some VHs that were hard to defend, and went to the river Yser, where my lines would be shorter and I could concentrate my troops.

There are a lot of units on the map. A lot. I tried to focus my attacks on the German artilleries, which was a good idea, because they never stopped coming. If I had given them the opportunity to use all their long distance fire at the same time, I would have had many problems.

There were many French/ Belgian reinforcements, but they appeared very far from the front line, so most of them didn't arrive in time for the battle. However, they were really helpful in the west (the Royal Navy) and the south, where the Germans nearly broke my lines. The fresh auxiliaries filled the gaps just in time. They gave me emotional support, too. I knew that the battle would be won when/ if they arrived, so I could keep calm and focused all the time.

In the last turns the Germans kept coming, but without any artillery power they couldn't actually threaten me, so I could counterattack, I recovered the VHs that I had left at the start, and won the scenario with a BV. Overall, a very good scenario.

9 The skirmish at Steenstraat , #8 , Brilliant Victory

The goal here is stopping the German offensive and then counterattack, while dodging the barrage fire and the gas clouds that the enemy throws against the player. Not an easy task, but it can be done with the help of some special units. In my case, it was the 5 bar, leadered, HQ infantry. It makes things much easier.

10 The Brusilov offensive - advance in Galicia , #9 , Victory

At HQ I upgraded my units. I didn't use them during the scenario, but I wanted to do that as soon as possible.

The Belgians can deploy just two units in the scenario (there is a new core recon already deployed on the map,so there are three units in total). Maybe the best option would have been using one cavalry/tank and one artillery, but I chose a more historical approach. So I deployed my old recon cars, and the HQ infantry.

The Russo- Belgian army had to take a number of towns, overcoming the Austrian trenches, some artillery and quite a few rivers and other obstacles. One of my leaders has the "bridging" ability, so that wasn't hard. But I decided to leave some Russian units guarding the VHs that I was taking (I didn't know if the Austrians would try to counterattack), so I lost nearly half of my auxiliaries along the way, and that slowed me a lot.

I was late for the BV. If I played it again, now that I now that the Austrians won't try to retake their lost vhs, I would be more aggressive and use more auxiliaries. I think that would save me 2-3 turns.

11 The Brusilov offensive - swan song , #10 , Brilliant Victory

Again, I deployed both armoured cars and the HQ unit. They helped the Russians cross the river, destroy the German defensive positions, and take the VHs. It's a short, quite brutal battle, and not difficult as long as the player is a little careful. The Belgians have a chance to shine, and that's good.

12 German Spring Offensives - Prelude at the Reigersvliet , #11 , Brilliant Victory

A very, very, difficult scenario. The German infantries aren't big deal if the player has got enough artilleries, which I have. But the Huns have lots of very precise barrage artilleries, that smash core units as soon as the AI spot them. Losing some core units is easy here. Losing the scenario is possible, too.

I tried the scenario many times, with many different strategies, until I discovered that the Germans had an observation baloon, which they used to spot my units. Then I decided to spend my pps at the HQ on a fighter-bomber with a single mission: destroy the baloon. It worked. When the baloon was over, the barrage artilleries didn't hurt me that much. It was still a tough battle, but one that I could win.

Just two minor observations. The Belgian army should have the "Europe" front selected. It's strange to see that the player can buy askaris at the HQ. And, since I receive a fighter unit at the start of the scenario, maybe the intro text should mention it.

13 The breakthrough - Houthulst Forest , #12 , Brilliant Victory

This scenario was supposed to be the first phase ao the final strike against the German lines. The Allies should have air supremacy, lots of artillery, and more motivated troops. The Germans, on the other hand, must face doom with dignity. There isn't much that they can do against what is coming, apart from annoying and delaying their enemies.

I think that this scenario manages to catch that spirit. The strategy isn't original at all (bombard the German trenches, advance, wipe out the defenders, repeat until the end), but it works like it's supposed to. The Germans are a nuisance, while at the same time they don't have a real chance to stop the Anglo- Belgian advance. Rain and mud are really nasty, but the turn limit should be enough, even for the most unlucky players.

14 Second breakthrough - outflanking the drowned no man's land , #13 , Brilliant Victory

Ithought that I would need a lot of fire power to break through the German lines, so I deployed all my artilleries and the HQ on a short line near Diksmuide. My recons were close enough to spot the enemy units. In the first and the second turn I could wipe the German defences out, opening a gap for the infantry and the cavalry. Then I could go all the way to Oostende.

In the flanks the auxiliaries had a hard time trying to overcome the Germans. At some places they were victorious, and at some others they didn't. Anyway, all of them pinned down quite a few enemy units, making my breakthrough easier.

However, my advance was much slower than I had expected. There were some nasty surprises along the way (long range spotting units, one train artillery with an insane range, and so on) and reaching Oostende became quite hard. In fact, two of my core units were in real danger, and I could barely save them. In the end, I had a last turn BV. A good ending for a very good campaign!
