So, now the time has come and for the first time I'm playing the campaign of Clu - an old companion and PBEM partner from the blissful times of Rayydars Raiders, a German player community that specialized in PG3D and its RSF-Efile. Until now we were able to hold the front here at the river Kolaanjoki. We now need you to help us to stabilize our positions.
Situation report: Although we fought tooth and nail the Soviets still drove us out of Suojarvi. Tanks caused panic among our troops and we were driven far back.
Enemy: The complete 56th Rifle division is storming down the road to Loimola.
Our forces: You are to command every group in the battle-area. We will try to gather up some more artillery, but don't expect too much.

The Soviets have to be stopped here. Otherwise the whole 4th Corps may become encircled.

Now comes the first real battle - and I do not know what to buy. I expect Soviet attacks, so buying an ATY with lots of ammo is mandatory. New units already have 50exp.

Although it is absolutely clear that the weather conditions will be mostly snowfall, I have not sold the Fighter and the AD. The AD already has a lot of experience and I hope for a leader. I completed them with a transport that can also SA :yes .

Situation report: The Russians have pursued us to Tolvajarvi. I have already dismissed the unlucky Everstiluutnantti Rasanen. Some Russians formations are on our flank, but for some mysterious reason they do not advance.
Enemy: The 139th Rifle Division and all its elements. This unit is well trained and could now rest for some days. They have even built some fortifications. This won't make it any easier.
Our forces: You'll co-operate with Everstiluutnantti Pajari. Throw everything you have into the fight. This might be the place for our first major victory. If you can destroy the 139th Rifle Division the way to Suvilahti will be open. Perhaps we can even continue with a counter-attack.

Situation report: Your troops should take a little rest at Sortavala, but some Soviet troops have broken through and are threatening our supply-lines.
Enemy: The 34th Tank division, an unidentified Cavalry division and an unknown number of patrols.
Our forces: Your group and the local defense-forces. We have built extensive fortifications.

You have to hold Sortavala (hex 09, 22) and must open the supply-lines for my corps (hex 20, 18). If Sortavala falls my corps is cut off and you know what that will mean...
At this very moment a huge air fleet is closing in on Sortavala. Make sure to have enough air-defense.

HQ: I improved the Fighter and an INF.

Interesting battle. I started twice. In the first attempt I was too passive and only repelled the Soviet attacks on my VH without getting near the enemy VH. Soviet tanks also prevented me from leaving my position. They blocked the way to the VH and without AT I had no chance to destroy the tanks.

In the second attempt I discovered that air transport was available. However, the Finns have no paratroopers. I tried a normal INF and surprisingly was able to land in the back of the Soviets at the enemy airfield and then capture a SH. From there, after a short march, I attacked the only VH without coming into contact with enemy tanks.

Attention: the Red Air Fleet is numerous and tries to cut off supplies by air blockade. Hope for good weather so that the AD and Fighters can become active.

we have prepared for the counter attack. It's time to adopt a more offensive strategy. Time is short and you have only one day to reach all objectives.
Situation report: Your combat group must spearhead into the Suojarvi area and destroy all the Soviet positions there.

the Soviets have obviously planned a larger operation in the Kelja-area the next days. You have to ruin that.
Situation report: Our reconnaissance reports that the 4th Rifle division has been greatly strengthened and is on it's way to the deployment areas.
Enemy: Beside the mentioned 4th Rifle division there is also the 49th Rifle division. The Red air force may be very active again. For the time the Soviets will be without any fighter-protection and without unfavorable weather conditions.

Smash the soviet deployment and don't get caught. You must also hold Taipale (hex 17, 18)!

Thanks to your work my boys were able to prepare these starting points.
Situation report: Since you have driven the Soviets out of this sector I have a special assignment for you. You shall infiltrate the Soviet lines and loot their supply depots.
Enemy: If you're fast, the woods are yours alone...
Our forces: Take the fastest and most powerful units of your group.

Take what the backs and sleds of your men can carry.
Remember: Speed is everything. A complete victory won't be easy to achieve, but it won't matter. Mainly it's all about looting as many depots as possible. Everything you loot will be used for your troops.

Note: Only 5 deployment hex's.
HQ: I gave transport to the 4 selected INF-units and improved the TB.

In the first attempt I failed - one VH was missing. The campaign also continues with a loss, but I had enough ambition for a second attempt. Changed the units and now used the Recon. Still, the battle is very cramped and the units have to be pushed extremely forward. A Soviet VH/SH spams reinforcements - this is very annoying.

A new task awaits you.
The Soviets have much better commanders in this sector and up until now we haven't been able to encircle their units.
Situation report: The enemy is advancing slow but steadily towards Kitilae and Lemetti. You need a strong counterstrike to stop their advance so we can launch a counterattack.
Enemy: We know about the 168th and 18th Rifle divisions. There are rumors about a Tank division which would be a major concern.
Our forces: Parts of your group are still on their way to this area and to date only a few units have arrived (seven deploy hexes). You're also in command of the 12th and 13th Divisions which are already on the spot.

Hurry up and establish some starting points for the upcoming offensive. Watch your flanks!

Situation report: The remnants of the two Soviet divisions are entrenched in a Mottis. Our light artillery can't seem to destroy their bunkers and the weather isn't as bad as in the battle for Suomussalmi. No chance here to starve them out.

Let me immediately come to the point, Majuri!
Situation report: My border guards and the local militias were only able to slow down the advancing Soviets. The enemy has been spotted as close as 15 kilometers from Kuhmo.
Enemy: The 155th Rifle division is advancing slowly at Lieksa and is fairly weak. The 54th on the other hand is a good division and General Gusevski is no fool. It won't be a piece of cake to encircle him.
Our forces: Parts of your group (eight deploy hexes) plus the 9th Division, which is coming down from Suomussalmi. You'll work together with Siilasvuo. I don't want to see any dispute about competence!

Stop Gusevski and drive the Russians back across the border. I see you have quite a huge pile of material left over from the last raid. You'll for sure need this in later missions!

I abandoned the first attempt after a few turns and started with a different composition of my units. I knew that a BV would be very difficult, so I calculated a longer battle in which I wanted to train my mountain troops and tanks. Enemy: The 24th, 123rd, 90th, 138th and 100th Rifle divisions have been identified. There appears to be massive Soviet armor and their air force is very active. To their advantage the weather is improving and I was told that the Soviets threw soldiers out of planes. Hmm...

Hey, you're an Everstiluutnantti now. Not long and you've got me...
The Soviet artillery has ploughed up the whole front in this sector. It's just like the Great War with the 27th Jaeger battalion.
Situation report: The situation is very critical here between my 3rd Corps and Kenraaliluutnantti Oehquists 2nd Corps. You are our only reserves and the Russians are advancing in strength.
Enemy: 17th and 142nd Rifle divisions reinforced by squadrons of aircraft. The Reds are said to be testing a new super heavy tank here.
Our forces: You will strengthen the 2nd and 8th Divisions with your units and the bombers of the 4th Aviation regiment are under your command. Unfortunately any fighter protection is left up to you.

By the way: watch your left flank, as it's very thin and the Russian will surly try to cross the Vuoksi River.

Kenraalimajuri Heinrichs, CIC 3rd Corps
HQ: I bought two ATY (starting experience 199). Both were immediately given a usable leader.

It is the announced heavy combat, partly in defense mode and partly in attack mode.
Biggest problems for me: a Soviet Range-6 ATY in the north-east and the flak in the central VH/SH. All others were well solvable.

Let's get down to the brass tacks, Everstiluutnantti!
Situation report: The Russians have closed in on Viipuri. That's why we plan a tank counterattack at Honkaniemi.
Enemy: Several Infantry divisions and we expect some tank battalions in the area.
Our forces: You command our tanks, Jaakari battalion 3 and your group. Your flanks are protected by the 1st, 4th, 5th and 23rd Divisions.

Destroy the soviet spearheads. We are getting shorter and shorter on supplies and if necessary you may have to disband some units.

Time is running out, Everstiluutnantti.
The Soviets have encircled Viipuri and several enemy divisions are marching across the frozen bay of Viipuri. We have never suffered casualties this high. In fact we defend a front twice as long as at the beginning of the war with only half of the troops we had in the beginning.
Situation report: Grim. Russians are everywhere.
Enemy: Countless enemy divisions, several tank-battalions and a strong air force. More or less the whole 7th army.
Our forces: Your group has to hold the shores.

We are getting extremely short on supplies. It may become necessary for you to disband some units.

Attack the Russian bridgeheads and wipe them out. Viipuri (hex 31, 03) has to be held! It's our pledge in the upcoming peace negotiations. If possible lead a counterattack at Kaislahti (hex 27, 12) and hold the shore at all costs. The longer you hold out the better is our bargaining position at the ceasefire and peace negotiations. Every minute counts.

The Soviets attack clumsily and so Viipuri is well defended. Only a few of my core units have to support here. I can concentrate on conquering Kaislahti, which is just south of Viipuri and only weakly defended. The biggest problem is the conquest of Vilaniemi to the west. For this, only aux units are available, which lack combat power and rely on air support and later on my core ATY support.
