The Winter War

The forgotten chapter of World War 2.

Most people don't consider the Winter War as part of World War 2 or even know about this conflict.

In May 1918 the Finns had achieved independence after a civil war and the expulsion of Bolshevik troops. Ever after this the Soviets sought for a way to regain control over Finland. On August 23rd 1939 the Ribbentrop-Molotov pact was signed. In a secret additional protocol the Baltic's and Finland were assigned to the Soviet sphere. Stalin did not wait long.

The Soviets demanded the border in Karelia be moved by some 20 miles in the Soviet Union's favor, they demanded a 30-year lease for the military use of the Hanko peninsula deep in Finnish territory, and the ceding of the islands of Koivisto, Suursaari, Lavansaari and Tytärsaari in the Gulf of Finland, along with the finnish part of the Rybachi peninsula in the Arctic Ocean. Accepting this would have dismantled the Finnish defense in return for a large area of useless wilderness in Eastern Karelia. Finland refused the Soviet demands.

On October 9th Finland orders a troop mobilization and within the next few days a Finnish delegation was confronted with these unacceptable territorial demands from Moscow.

The first shots of the war were fired on November 26. Seven shells detonated near the small village of Mainila approximately 800 meters inside Soviet territory. Molotov sent Helsinki a furious note and accused the Finns of provoking a war. Today we know that the shots were set off by the Soviets themselves.

On November 30th 1939 the Soviets bombed Helsinki and some 450,000 men crossed the border...

Now you must defend Finland's honor and freedom!
