Could have been BV-1, but a nasty campaign feature made me play the additional turn: you have to play till last BV/V/TV turn to get all turn-pp :fit
That, and the 2 units at the southern SH still had some XP to grab.
# the 100mm "mountain" gun, cavalry, infantry-on-foot and both mountain inf started in the southern DHs, marching towards Nagytalmács. The battle took forever (turn 10). Out of this group, the 100mm gun and inf-on-foot traveled by train to the southern SH.
# rest of units in the north, taking care of the northern map half. Out of this group, the 84mm gun and Pak helped in taking Nagytalmács - and 1 inf operated in the western lands to grab flags.
# airforce helped were necessary - speaking of, particularly the bomber had too much spinach for breakfast :banana
# refit went mostly to the northern group, which had some minor problems (theoretically i should have send maybe 1 additional unit here, perhaps :lolnod )

6) Voronezh ~~ last turn BV

Played the scenario twice. During the first run damage to core was horrible (the lack of recon aircrafts is really showing now) and i missed the BV (enemy reinforcements in unexpected location/not mentioned in the briefing... speaking of, friendly reinforements are also not mentioned :nyet ). I then changed strategy, including HQ decisions, for the second run.

both soviet reinf battlegroups arrive at the edges of the map, why should their locations be revealed? besides the "larger" bg arrives at a very logical area :dunno total soviet reinf is 9 units, not too significant, players should expect 5-10 reinf in each/any scenarios, sometimes ai purchases more around its sh

I like shorter campaigns - however, they a have subtile problem(*) : due to their shortness, players can't learn all necessary basics in a reasonable amount of time. I.e. in the 5th or 6th scenario it is difficult for me to see what is "logical" and what "should be expected" :huh? lets take WSFW as the opposite example: it is so long that you can (and also have the time to) learn all mandatory things during the first 15-20 scens and "live of that" unitl the final 48th scen.

(*) a "problem" is not the same as a "bad thing".
Specifically about Voronezh: in my second run, the russian counter attack on Kastornoye did not take place :dunno and the aux reinforcements were used to avoid the paratrooper upgrade while grabbing even more pp than the para could.
So, agreed, it is even difficult from a design point of view to make the play a fun gaming experience.
(fun could mean "non-revealing", too)
Hence back to the first statements:

ok, i see now, thanks. i'll add some hints about friendly reinf when it consist of 5 or more units, and some hint when enemy reinf consists of 10 or more units, with some sort of location, if necessary. i warn players in campain readme that ai always get some reinf

General idea: i expected the enemy to attack on a wide front, with his armour concentrated in the center - i had also seen the turn report with its "retreat 8 units", expecting an EH somewhere southwest (although i assumed it closer to my positions than it actually was) - even though my assumptions were not totally accurate, they served my (crazy) plan quite well (and now that its over: i do confess that even as late as turn 7 i was considering a scenario restart with different tactics). Anyway...

# team green: was using the forests to delay and if possible damage the enemy in their sector, slowly moving south - with great success
# team yellow: similarto green, however the tank helped a bit in the east (around turn 4-7) before heading back to the west - acceptable-to-good success
# team red: i didn't draw arrows "where did all units entrench for the fight" in order to avoid confusion. Except for the orange arty (which could support a large area from their position), the 2cm Flak and the aux AT (both should have been orange, too), these units moved into the forest, using it as a defensive and hiding postion. The success was great, but an HQ unit would have been better (i confess that i reloaded an autosave 4 times, else PzManiac would have taken his holidays on Fiji :stress )

Later strategy:
# green retreated to the EH
# yellow was mostly operational and continued the fight against the enemy, supported by an aux StuG
# red cleared the area, took the nearby VH and airfield - the Turán, supported by Blitzstoper, traveled far east and managed to take Buturnilovka, but other than pp this was pointless (however inexpensive - and i was prepared to cancel the attack, if there had been serious opposition) - meanwhile, all artilleries moved west or southwest

In both attempts it looked like this:
# deployed the mountain division in the northwestern area, the other units wherever they found a place - strictly speaking: armor first, arty and Flak second, recon cars in between, infantry in the back
# core airforce was undeployed to see how everything develops

I restarted after the first AI turn, since i saw immediately that i made false assumptions - on the plus side, i finally understood how Csaba designs :banana
While the core moved similar to my first run (you can't do anything wrong in one turn :D ), i changed the defense positions of the auxes.
So, second run.

Auxes
# northwest-west - pulled the western arty+Flak closer to the Tiger group at once, while the Pak and tank waited (to eat some tasty recons) - in turn 2, the Pak also moved east into the forest, while the tank kept waiting
# northwest-east - used the hills and forest of Loyeva and Nadvirna as a defensive position (only to realize halfway through the scenario that hills are no solid defensive position :doh ) and used the Tiger as a roadblock in Nadvirna (every now and then jumping out and overrunning some breakfast)
# central and east - left the inf sitting in Sheshory as a spotting+blocking measure, the Panzer Abteilung rushed northeast, and the remaining units used the forests west and south of Zastava do dig in

The Tiger group, with the help of aux fighters+bombers (which were lead by Blitzstoper), held out long enough for relieve forces to arrive.
The "forest Kessel" northwest of Zastava (and a bit of help from bad weather) created a nice trap for the enemy, leaving the auxes in a position to start a counter attack on their own.

# in turn 2, contrary to the initial plan, Cpts Doug, Csaba, Paqueo and Björn (tank, SPAT, recon, Flak), supported by the 150mm gun, Luis' cavalry brigade and Wonderdoc (fighter), split up to intercept a combined armour and mountain division (though i only saw the armour at first) which was heading down to Vizhnitsya
# rest of units attacked Kolomiya - except for PzManiac who build an airfield in turn 3 and only then followed the Kolomiya group (on the plus side, he did grab the XP trigger :banana )

The middle part of the battle was a huge mess with no clear strategy - but that, bad weather in combination with hills, and the overall late (turns 6-7 for core, 7 for auxes iirc) start of my counter attacks was probably the saving point.
The later part of the battle became clearer again, with main core units (from Yaremche and Kolomiya) relieving the Tiger group and minor core units (from Kolomiya and Vizhnitsya) supporting the eastern auxes in their attack on the enemy supply area.

The air war was brutal... for auxes :wink The craziest part was, well, who would expect AI fighters to attack an escorted bomber (with the bomber and its fighter escort both at full strength, well supplied and experienced) during clear weather ? Luck in unluck, the bomber in question was the Hs 129 tankbuster :stress instead of Blitzstopers Me 210 :phew

Almost all OS was lost (only David's Flak has still 2 points), infantry suffered the usual pounding, but damage to core was light otherwise.

(speaking of: lots of overcast and a bit of rain.)

It was a bit spooky in the middle of the operation, since a large FoW created between groups north and center, so that Paqueo split from his group as soon as possible (was still later than i wanted - have i mentioned already that a recon plane would be nice to have ? :lolnod ). When it became clear that the northern/eastern group didn't need armour support anymore, Csaba and the tank speeded down to Arad too.
Southern group crossed the river without problems and used railtransport to get to Arad.
When the enemy counterattack started, the weather became and remained sunny, so that airforce could join.
Hero of the scen was probably Doug, who "overwatched" the counterattack and made it so much easier to fend it off :tiger

Maskirovka worked so well that our strategy department completely underestimated the enemy's strength, confused the arrival times of friendly units AND didn't know that there wouldn't be enough troops to fully refit core in the next scenario :scared

In my first attempt, Para's engineers (turn 4) as well as Thomsen's engineers (turn 5) took their holidays on Fiji - since it looked that even more core would follow them (respectively finish the scen in halfdead or undead condition) i decided to restart, change HQ decisions and completely rework strategy.

In my second attempt i reloaded the last autosave, since unknowingly i couldn't fully refit core in the next scenario.
But first things first.

Deployment:

Repositioned the auxes at Szatmárnémeti into a more efficient formation (yea, sorry, the 2 pics are from right to left - i have my confused day :wink ).
Team blue defended Nagykároly (red dots indicate artillery) - with blue infantry ready to cycle, in order to reduce their losses and Paqueo (recon) to sit where no enemy armour could bite him -, rest of core used the plains around Szamosdob to prepare the counterattack. Aux reinforcements headed to support the Szamosdob group (first team) respectively defense of Szatmárnémeti (second team - the infantry of this group crossed the river, rest of units took the bridge). Weather and HQ units were a great help to reduce casualties on our side.
Our counterattack started in turn 7 still at almost full strength - and was successfully completed in turn 12 without major losses (unless a Pz III counts as a "major loss" in '44 ;) ).

I just read Csaba's strategy - funny, i had a very similar plan :) (the differences come from AI behaviour, core composition and me not knowing the scenario - i.e. i was expecting the brunt of the enemy's attack in the north)

Weather and air war
Only one sunny turn (iirc turn 2), the rest was overcast until it started to rain in turn 5.
Mud in turn 7. Sunny in turn 8 (afair, it remained sunny, but i didn't really pay attention, since the air war was over in turn 10), dry in turn 9.
Because of the weather, neither side risked much. My air force was operating in the southwest - the enemy hid, only in turn 3-to-4 there was a bit of action, since an adventurous enemy fighter wanted to attack the rear of the mountain division (but was stopped by an AD-trap).
In turn 8 the air became hot, when all of the enemy's air forces launched a concentrated attack on Kunszentmiklós - they could be shot down in turns 9 and 10.

Deployment and early strategy
PzManiac rushed back to the defense line of Budapest (Gyömrö), in case something would sneak past my troops (he started returning to the front in turn 5).
The mountain division, supported by some minor core elements and almost all northern auxes (available at scen start) formed a line at the forests south of Dabas-Hernád.
Paqueo and my hungarian armour (starting in the western deploy zone) rushed down to Kunszentmiklós in the southwest.
The remainder of the core started in the eastern deploy zone (with Urica's recon cars and all 150mm arty at the front for some sniping, if possible - it was, gaining the 150mm guns their 5th xp bar) and quickly moved to Pilis, using the hills and hinterlands as the entrench area.
Once the core had moved out (still in turn 1), an aux infantry defended Cegléd to delay the enemy a bit (and lure the AI, if it had no spotting), while the aux mountain engineer moved to Ceglédbercel (same idea - soon proved to be not necessary).
Aux reinforcements helped in the north.
The idea was to let the enemy expend his momentum against prepared arty defenses - worked quite well in the end, but i was a bit worried in between, especially when the airfield (30,6) was lost in turn 4 (could be immedeately retaken - the worry was not needed, as this was the farthest north that the enemy reached) and considering that i confused the enemy's line of advance.

Later - north
Beginning in turn 4 it seemed that the enemy's momentum was spend and in turn it was almost gone. Aircraft scouted the area and indeed found nothing left except for far-away artillery :huh? at once i divided the core units of the northern group roughly into a 2/3 and 1/3 size, with the larger group heading down to Dabas and the rest (including the aux reinforces) starting the counter attack on Cegléd.

Center
The battle was really sick, i suppose that parts of the AI units that should have attacked in the north operated here (surely supported by even more reinforcements from the south).
Artillery, aux tanks and Csaba could keep the enemy armour at bay, but it was not very pleasant. The peak of the battle was in turns 5-to-7, with an aux Pz IV H destroyed (turn 5) and Doug ending up with only 2 SP left :stress (you can surely imagine what happened when an aux unit discovered the replacement trigger :phew ).
With the additional arty (and a second HQ) from the northern group, as well as the Panther from the western group sneaking past the enemy lines and starting to bite the enemy's artillery, the battle could finally be turned in our favour.

West
Was rather relaxed. The initial attack was stopped dead with the help of air force (i was seriously dreaming of a relieve attack from this group towards Dabas or a counter towards the south in turn 2-3 :lol ). The later attacks could be contained thanks to weather and the nearby river.

Late
With the supporting units in the center being able to split againg (the Panther and Csaba rushed down to Kunszentmiklós, since during the rain period aircraft discovered something funky), clear weather for the airforce and dry ground, the battle was quickly turning to our favour. The only fancy maneuvers in the last couple of turns consisted of my expectation, that there wouldn't be enemies sitting on the small flags around the map (not 100% accurate, but there was no SP loss - have i mentioned already that a recon plane would be godlike to have ? :-D ) so that i mindlessly send infantry to capture them - the only exceptions were in the far southwest (where hungarian armour and Paqueo had not much to do, so they spotted their path) and center (overflow of units).

Honestly, i only knew how the victory condition worked and thus had no clear plan to take all map-pp - if there hadn't been auxes (or core HQ), i would have left much more pp behind.

The Turán, Zrinyi, Patrick (arty), non-leadered 150mm gun, David (Flak), Thomsen (engineer), PzManiac (construction), a regular, Paqueo and Luis (both HQ) accompanied the new tank proto. They scratched Kápolnasnyék in the north, but thanks to rain could sneak by unnoticed and quickly headed for the EH at Érd.
The rest if the core started in the southwest and operated on the diagonal from the deploy zone to Ercsi.
Auxes took care of the central area from Székesfehérvár to Kápolnásnyék.

14) Unternehmen Frühlingserwachen ~~ held 7 VHs (BV)

Didn't finish yesterday - but the scenario is a :monster anyway, devilishly fun :) but :monster

all Forward Observer attachments from infantry (ground condition in last scenario made them practically pointless, and this one didn't look different)
all Support from artillery (similar reason)

I forgot to make a "deployment" save - but going from memory:
# southeast/southcenter: the mountain division, Turán, Paqueo and a regular inf
# southwest: the unleadered Tas tank, Csaba (AT), two 150mm guns (1 leadered), a Flak, PzManiac (construction) Luis (HQ), and a regular (that was send down to defend the starting VH)
# rest in the north

The mountain division moved east, with Csaba joining them.
The southwestern group + auxes went on the diagonal towards Soponya.
The northern core group moved along the map border towards Seregelyés in the northeast. The northern auxes towards Polgárdi.
Lots of cities were bypassed until the late turns (after turn 10).

In turn *i have forgotten* it became muddy and in turn 8 the ground dried.
This allowed for a quicker advance, but also led core units into enemy reinforements - those spooky encounters caused lots of ouchy.

At each VH i left some units behind.

Core loss: PzManiac became the Hero of Enying, while defending the town against countless enemy infantry without proper support on his side.
A relieve force arrived too late to save him though :ohno :rip

Campaign critique

Negative feelings came almost exclusively from missing info about friendly reinforcements, but Csaba adressed this already.

There are 2-3 :monster scenarios, that can be tricky:
# Battle at Don River
# the other being Unternehmen Frühlingserwachen (and probably Konrad III)

The campaign has nice difficulty, excellent change of scenario setups and (to my surprise, honestly) i think the replay value is above average, despite HRA being a limited deployment campaign. Core composition, leaders and strategy can make a change - and as can be seen in the AAR threads, there is a lot of difference (in a positive way) at the difficulty levels.

I enjoyed the play very much, thank you Csaba - and CC Team for picking this campaign as a CC :clap :bow
