The 2 offensive units crossed the river with my core unit using the bridge. The recon was ahead and ran into a couple of enemies, it killed 1 then moved on towards the VH. The core unit moved up and attacked a second Zulu and was given a leader on it's very first action which was either exceptionally good luck or, as I suspect, the unit had a 100% leader chance setting :notsure Once at the VH the 2 units (bridge was :rip ) attacked together and the core unit took the VH for the last turn BV and an Arty proto was awarded :cool

No real strategy here just a push towards the 2 VHs. The battle south of the river went against us and we need to cross over 2 Infs and an Atry to help them to the VH. On the north side we came up against masses of defenders so we forced a path along the north river bank while mobile units kept the enemy units to their north busy. The MSU fought really well as did the new Horse-Tank while the new Inf unit took some serious damage so spent the rest of the battle trading sp with an entrenched enemy. The Lib Inf took the first VH on the north bank then crossed and waited for the 2nd to be cleared then took that for a last turn BV.

I decided to leave the core Arty behind at the deploy zone as it moves so slowly and I didn't want it getting caught alone in the desert or holding up the more mobile units, it moved onto the starting VH with an Inf either end of the defensive setup, the rest set out towards the flags and VHs. At the oasis I used the Heavy Cav to take the flag and gain a free leader, Super Man, should come in handy :cool the oasis was quickly surrounded by masses of spearmen etc so I left the 2 Heavy Cavs, aux gatling gun and the Recon there the hold up the enemy and allow more breathing room for the slow moving MSUs to get to the EH. Those Heavy Cavs are absolutely :monster against Infantry, they defend well, then on my turn they ran rampant through the weakened enemies and seem to gain exp very quickly :evil I left the 3 Horse units in the centre of the map to engage any enemies that appeared while we continued the march to the EH. The 2 core Infs spent a few turns attacking the Fort nearby the EH then 7 units escaped and we hung about gaining more exp before escaping the last 2 Cavs for the BV.

The core made a south-westerly advance towards the VHs while a large part of the aux force headed north-west to the held VH on the hill that I had a strong feeling would come under attack at some point. At the starting deploy area I made a defensive perimeter and let them dig in. The core fought a strong battle at the first VH and the more experienced Heavy Cav was sent in to gain the leader. The Arty and an Inf were left behind while the rest keep going to the last VH. In the north the VH was surrounded and hanging on fro grim death while 2 aux Artys made the excruciatingly slow advance to help them. The VH was close to being over-run when the 2 Artys finally arrived and with 3 providing defensive fire we held on, this also allowed the Horse-Arty to resupply each turn as it runs out of ammo very quickly. The last VH was cleared and the newest Heavy Cav was sent in for the 140exp :cool

The core was split into 3 groups with each heading towards a VH. The western group headed up the railway line without incident and took their VH and nearby flag easily then 2 units returned to assist with the assault on the centre VH which then allowed 2 units to speed east to help with the VH on the big hill which was well defended. The Recon and a Heavy Cav arrived at the eastern VH from above and took out the defending Arty which then allowed my troops to continue their frontal assault and the VH fell for a last turn BV.

This was a brutal battle with the river crossings depleting my units strength big time. The Super Man Heavy Cav was first over the river between the northern VHs and he headed around to the rear to look for the pesky Arty that was pounding my units crossing the river below, it turned out it was hidden under and Inf in the western VH so he did some hit and run attacks until helped arrived. The eastern VH under assault by a Heavy Cav, Recon and Aus Mounted Inf was a hard nut to crack due to the hidden AT gun below the Inf so I sent back the aux Arty that was heading north and it was able to help them secure the VH and the BV. My new Horse-Arty was given the task of capturing a VH in the north and he gained a leader in the process, not the best one but the extra range is welcomed.

I studied the map for quite a while on this one, trying to work out my battle plan. I guessed that there would be heavy defence on the southern side of the hill leading up to the lower VH and as the rail station was mentioned in the brief I guessed maybe it was heavily defended as well. With this in mind my plan was a hook attack, I moved my core units up the railway until they were just south of the station, then hooked them around to the left where my scout had discovered a line of entrenched Infs across the map. We chose to attack one about 5 hexes from the station with the idea to break through as quickly as possible, pass between the 2 mountains to the north and south, then split the core and make a push for the VHs. This worked out really well and we discovered another line of entrenched Inf a few hexes further north so the core made their way between the 2 lines, over the railway then split, the Heavy Cavs were tasked with the northern VH which they did a great job of despite those annoying R2 Infs who after receiving a small amount of damage are easily over-run. The remainder of the core fought it's way down and up onto the mountain where a battle for the southern VH took place that lasted right to the end for a last turn BV. The newly purchased Guards units was tasked with exp gaining only so with the aux Recon and aux Arty he worked his way along the first line of entrenched Infs taking one out at a time and moving to the next and in doing so gained 233 exp :) 60 of this was gained from capturing the station later in the battle as well.

The northern group of Aux horse units crossed the river using the bridge and made their way to the north of the top VH, fought their way up the hill with big losses and assaulted the VH but were all :rip :rip :rip by the combined defence :whine
In the south the aux horse group headed straight down the west side of the line of hills while several of the aux units that started near the deploy zone headed south down the east side hills and they both arrived around the same time at the south-western VH, a difficult battle took place but they were able to wrest it from the defenders with high losses.
In the centre the core crossed the river in several places and headed to the first VH which they took without so much damage then they split. The Infs and the 2 MGs headed straight up the mountain and had to fight hard to get to within reach of the VH, then endure loads of defensive fire before the Arty ran out of ammo and couldn't resupply fully and finally not at all and we killed him. The 2 horse Infs and 2 Artys headed south for a frontal attack on the lower eastern VH but weren't able to penetrate the defences so they pulled back a hex or 2 and drew out some enemies which in turn helped the Heavy Cavs who had taken the upper eastern VH and were heading to the last VH to attack it from above and they finally took it for a BV-2

After a study of the map I decided to defend the 3 upper bridges and leave the one in the south-east as I thought no Germans will be crossing there :lol WRONG they swarmed across :eek a quick reshuffle of the defence and we had a line of Infs and Light Cavs on the southern flank backed by 2 Artys and 2 MGs and with this setup they were able to hold the Germans back successfully. At the northern bridge the 2 Heavy Cavs and 1 Arty did well to stop the enemy from crossing and eventually when things died down a little the Arty was sent south to bolster the southern line. At the north-eastern bridge the Heavy Cav and Inf held their ground and after a few turns, were able to cross the river and pursue the enemy, destroy them then attack the Germans who were assaulting the next VH down from the rear, taking out their Arty and HQ. Still they swarmed over that southern bridge, bloody hell was I wrong about that one :o My MSU was surrounded at one point and if not for the arrival of the Arty from the northern bridge making it 3 Artys and 2 MGs giving support fire he would have been lost :eek the hardest thing was keeping the Artys supplied with ammo, this is where those purchasable little add ons like support giving 2 extra ammo would come in really handy. The little Bomber worked hard taking a sp or 2 here and there and shooting down the enemy plane, before dashing back to base to resupply, it's super handy when the airfield is so close to the front with these recon movement planes :cool

We advanced until contact was made with the enemy, fought for 2 turns then began a hex by hex withdrawal which kept the German Artys out of range until the Super Man Heavy Cav and the Lancers were able to sneak through and destroy the 4 Artys guns. With their Artys gone the German attacks were easily defeated and they were picked off until all the MSUs required were killed.

The map is small so I predicted there would be maybe plenty of entrenched Infs backed by Artys and mobile units, I was pretty much on the money as it turned out :cool
With this in mind I used the hex by hex advance method until I made contact with the enemy, then we moved ahead when we could and tried to keep a solid front line pushing the enemy back or destroying them as we went. The plane had some work to do and shot down 2 enemy aircraft then did mainly spotting. I sent the Super Man Heavy Cav up the left side of the map with his mission to attack the predicted German Artys at the rear. He took out the first then was attacked and had to back off and wait til the friendly Artys had inched their way in range to support him then he was able to work his way along taking out 3 more Artys then he crossed the northern river and got himself to the rear of the top VH and began hit and run attacks while he waited for help from the slowly advancing core units. The 2 lower VHs fell within a couple of turns of each other and the remaining Heavy Cavs dashed north to help Super Man at the final VH, they cleared it then the Kiwi MOunted Rifles had the honor of taking the flag for the BV-2

I set my defensive line and after the AI had played it's first turn I moved the eastern deployed group to the south-west a few hexes where a large gap existed in the front line. I then did nothing but soak up the attacks, resupply my Artys, kill any weakened enemies adjacent to mine, fly my plane about attacking whatever it came across, repeat, repeat...... until turn 8 when I sensed the enemy numbers were depleted and I went on the offensive. I quickly regained the 2 lost VHs in the east and sent everything to the final VH in the middle of the map. The original enemy VH was surrounded with wire, forts, MG nests, Bunkers and all sorts but with turns running out we had no option but full frontal attacks. We threw everything we had at the defences and by the final turn it was mine for the taking and we soaked up the German counter-attack on the final turn for the BV.

Well that started out a good day at the office, a proto Tank at the end of the last battle, a free Tank from HQ at the beginning of this one and 2 Heavy Cavs upgradable at HQ as well so we went from no Tanks to 4 in one move :banana :banana :banana :banana ..... then we hit the rain and mud of the Somme :whine the disgsuting conditions changed whatever battle plan I thought I had to a slow hex by hex slog through the endless mud. It dried for a couple of turns near the end and the 2 Artys moving like snails down from the northern VH, which had just fallen, were able to move at full speed to the south-eastern VH and help with the assault that had bogged down. With the combined Artys and MGs from the front and 2 Infs that had made use of the dry ground to scoot around past the enemy airfield to the rear, we began the task of wearing down the defenders and running that damned buried Arty on the VH out of ammo. Finally the nut cracked and we were able to clear and capture it for a last turn BV.

The Horse units, 2 MGs and Mortar were deployed on the northern end of the deploy zone, the Tanks all together on the southern end and the rest spread along the middle section. The horse group were sent to the north VH and spent the rest of the battle taking it. The Infs group with an Arty assaulted towards the middle-east VH and the Tanks towards the south-east VH with these 2 groups taking the closest VH first then continuing on to their assigned targets. The defences at all VHs was strong, the mud never dried and it rained every turn bar one so it wasn't a happy time for my troops but they kept pushing and on the 2nd to last turn for the BV the last VH fell and it was over :phew

We crossed the river and forced our way up the narrow strip of land between the rivers, took the first VH before splitting into 3 groups and heading towards the various VHs. The 2 Light Cavs were sent south to see if they could cross the river to the south-east VH but struggled against the defenders and had to retreat. The 3 VHs to the north were taken and held while 2 groups forced bridgeheads over the eastern river and took the VH after a few turns. With only 2 turns left to hold the VHs no attacks of note arrived and the constant rain kept the enemy planes from attacking as well.

We had a scare right at the beginning when a bunch of enemy assault troops appeared at the southern end of our line so while the northern units advanced hex by hex the Tanks deployed in the south got rid of the enemies within the line then were able to quickly catch up to the slowly advancing Infs and Artys so the core moved in as straight of a line as possible which worked really well and the Germans were slowly but surely pushed back and destroyed. The new Assault Infs proved a really good investment so will upgrade the other 2 as well ASAP. In the end a easy enough BV without too many sp losses and a Fighter proto :banana

The Tanks, a Recon and an Arty were deployed in the northern deploy area and the rest in the southern area. The north group was assigned the task of a fast breakthrough of the front and a dash to the furthermost VHs. South group's task was to regain the VHs lost to the enemy on the first turn which showed masses of Infantry surrounding them. This plan worked in that I gained the BV but north group never got it's fast breakthrough but rather an easterly slog across the countryside. Constant rain was not unwelcome as the enemy air force is strong at this end of the cam and my little planes struggle to be effective. Both groups advanced using the same north-south defensive line system that worked so well in the last battle and doing this they were able to destroy large numbers of enemies with only minimal losses.

Scen 19 Battle of the Selle , Brilliant Victory

I followed the same doctrine as last battle with a group made up of all the Tanks supported by a Recon and an Arty deployed in the north deploy zone and the soft units in the south. The Tank group smashed their way across the map, taking the first VH quickly until they hit the river and resistance stiffened, they crossed with some damage and pushed on but when they reached the main city in the centre of the map where the wheels fell off with stubborn defenders throwing back the Tanks. In the south the foot sloggers moved slowly but surely south over the river, then hooked left and took the VH after a massive battle. They then headed due east towards the next VH fighting a small but tough battle near the river before pushing on and taking the south-east VH then finally hooking northward to take the centre-east VH. By this time the Tanks had won the battle at the big city and we mucked around getting $$ til the end, which turned out to be pointless as it was the end of the cam :whine

Final thoughts-
Wow I have to say I really enjoyed this campaign :cool which surprised me as Kaiser efile cams can be a little slow at times but this one was fast and fluid in the early battles. I still say those Heavy Cavs are :monster :monster :monster and gather exp at an amazing rate while slicing through hordes of weakened foot soldiers. From the deserts of Africa to the bombed out fields of northern France, the battles are varied and entertaining and this is no easy feat with WW1 battles especially so awesome job there Urica :bow

I share your assessment and praise to Urica for this excellent work. The Kaiser Efile is not my best friend, but this campaign had really surprised me positively and helped to reduce my reservations about the Efile a little.
