Greetings generals and :welcome to my part of the development-playtest :howdy

This thread is about randowe's and my collaboration on the upcoming "Army Group X" campaign for the Atomic Efile.
It is a fictional German campaign that will take the players from Malta through North Africa and the Orient to Russia. The main drive is to present as many new maps from the recent years as possible and provide something fun :ihope to play.

We have just started building the campaign, with the first scenario being finished...

1) Operation Herkules ~~ BV-2


BV-2 is looking freaky, but in the (more or less unchanged) current version i played the scenario so much that i knew what to do when, and i also had some lucky combat results.

Turns 1-6:
Contrary to the suggestion n the briefing, i landed 1 smaller group (from west to east: Pz III, 1x arty and the Pak) on the north-central coast of Malta, and the larger group around Bugibba.
Auxiliary airborne units went for the nearby airfield and defended it for several turns.
Navy at first supported the 2 landings, then sailed slowly westwards shelling enemy artillery - and preparing to face the enemy fleet.
Rcn and Ftr aircraft hunted enemy fighters - thus i kept the bombers in reserve for the first 3 turns. Tricky was the loss of an aux Ftr in turn 3, but by that time a good part of the enemy airforce was shot down or damaged.

Turns 6+
1 of the core infantries went westwards to capture remaining VHs. Rest of core went for the main part of Malta.
The incoming Italians landed on the west, south and east coasts of Gozo (evil AI tried to block the southern landing sites :goodie ).

The destroyers were sacrificed in turns 6-7 or 7-8 i think, in an attempt to slow down the enemy fleet.
Battleships later sailed southeast again to support the core.


I picked up a great leader on the bomber, dunno if i should keep since it could spoil the run :doh :lol

I split the core into 2 groups, a) "fast" to land ASAP and b) "slow" sailing east.

a) consisted of 2x leFH, rcn car, Flak - it moved south, landed around Ras Lanuf and rushed east on roads.
b) consisted of tank, leIG, leFH, 2x infantry, marines - it sailed east and landed southwest of Mersa Brega.

The defense of El Agheila is easy, since airforce is in the area.
Mersa Brega is a different story - in this playthrough the only survivor in the east was the Italian rcn car. To me, losing a tank AND an arty in a single scenario feels extra embarassing :o but i just failed to get them out in time.

As for the core Flak, it wasn't really needed this time - in fact, its XP came exclusively from putting it on the frontline :fight

Dont' worry. The player isn't meant to save the auxiliary units anyway. They should just hold the position as long as possible.

The 75mm ATG was left behind at the starting VH, for a lack of transportation.

The Pz III G, SPAT, "Marines" and leFH "Merecedes" formed an "all terrain" group and rushed northeast to link up with the Italians.
Since the Italians fielded a tank, the Pz III later split up and joined the wheeled group.

Wheeled units (SdKfz 222, 2x leFH, 2x inf, Flak truck) followed the eastern road to El Adem.

The Pz III H and SdKfz 231 (*) remained with the DAK units and moved east to the specified VH to take out the expected enemy tank units, and ultimately reach Bir el Gubi in the southeast.

(*) freebie units given at start of scenario

Shock moment: i failed to kill an enemy rcn car (which survived with 1 :devil Strength Point) and consecutively had forgotten about it - 2 turns later it liberated an airfield in my back, leaving 2 of my bombers without ammo in a crucial moment. I hate AI 2.0 :lol

That's a mistake :bonk As that version of the 251 carried only a 3,7cm PAK, the range should be 1. I'll change that.

In the south i deployed a fast tracked group (Pz III G, SdKfz 251/10, 1x leFH and Grenadiere) plus 2 all-terrain units (SdKfz 231, 25 pdr).
The all-terrain as well as the auxiliary units are too slow to keep up cross-country with the tracked units in the long run, so they split up around Sidi Omar (30,46) - the tracked units continued eastwards, while the others flanked Halfaya from the south.

Rest of units were deployed in the north. 1x aux infantry was left at the starting VH, but otherwise also here all auxes joined the core.
The first task of the northern group was to take over the Bardia-Sollum area. Being almost completely limited to roads and facing some enemy Flaks made this battle a little tricky, but interesting :cool
It was planned that the northern group later joins with the tracked group in the east, but artillery and bombers blew up 3 roads underway, slowing the group down too much.

The tracked units, with fire support from bombers and navy, still made a BV-1 possible. Since everything looked clear, i played the additional turn so that an arty could get the Leader Trigger (arty doesn't capture hexes in this Efile :whine ). Unfortunately the 1-XP-bar artys were too far away, so that a 2-bar unit got the Trigger, but anyway: an artillery leader is an artillery leader :banana

Except for the northern Replacement Trigger (which wasn't aquired at all), all supplies were taken by core infantry, allowing a continuous battle :phew

Pz III "Resil" and leFH "Skill.Rcn." were deployed in the southeast (i wished there was a third DH). Together with the aux FlaMG and Sahariano they operated along the map border until reaching Abu Hummus (67,35). There they turned west to Kafr el Dauwar (55,32).

Meanwhile, SdKfz 251/10, 251/9 and 222, the grenadiers, 1x infantry and non-leadered leFH joined the remaining southern auxes to conquer the area south of Lake Maryut and link up with the smaller group at Kafr.

Rest of core was deployed in the west for the main attack on Alexandria.

Underway i discovered a minefield and left the leIG behind for target practice.

In turn 7 i was starting to feel :stress, because 0 ground units had crossed the El Mahmudiya Canal yet (Air Transports are available, but i am going to playtest the campaign without airborne operations). However, once you're past the Canal everything goes faster - especially if you have (half)tracked and/or fast (10 speed) wheeled/allterrain vehicles, and if you are more patient/planning than me with resupplying your units.

The Pz III H actually raised "Aggressive Attack" as leader - i changed for experimental purposes.
