First blood: the Zulu war

June 3rd, 1879

In 1878, not long after my 22nd birthday, I was finally commissioned as second lieutenant. Less than a month after I had joined my regiment we were ordered to travel to Southern Africa, where a war had erupted against the local Zulu tribes. Amazingly, those native warriors had managed to defeat two of our battalions at Isandlwana in January 1879, and Lord Chelmsford, the British commander, had been forced to ask for reinforcements.

However, the journey was long, so when we arrived our troops had already retaken the initiative. I couldn't take part in any of the big battles of this peculiar war, but at least I had my first real combat experience.

Despite all the years that have passed, I still remember it as if it was yesterday; our scouts had spotted a small enemy impi (armed force) raiding a fertile valley. My battalion was sent to put an end to that menace and destroy the Zulu camp.

Tel-el-Kebir

September 13th, 1882

In 1878 a group of Egyptian officers led by Colonel Urabi had rebelled against the Khedive, and a couple of years later they virtually controlled that country. Our government feared that Urabi's policies could damage the investments of British companies in Egypt and our interests in the Suez Canal, so it gave support to the Khedive and in 1882, after our fleet bombarded Alexandria, a British expeditionary force disembarked in Egypt.

As a member of the 2nd battalion of the Grenadier Guards, I was one of the officers of that army. Aside from patriotism and sense of duty, at that moment in my life I had strong personal reasons for searching the glory of battle; I had finally found the courage to propose to my dear Evelyn, but I still feared that Colonel Worthington wouldn't approve the marriage of his only daughter to a mere Lieutenant with little combat experience.

These were the thoughts that occupied my mind when General Wolseley decided that, after securing the Suez Canal, we would finally march on Cairo. We knew that the main Egyptian force was heavily entrenched at Tel-el-Kebir, near the railway that linked Cairo to Ismailia. Apparently, the enemy didn't send any reconnaissance patrols out of their trenches at night, so Wolseley thought that we could approach their position by night, surprise them and stage a frontal assault at dawn.
Providence favoured us, and everything went according to Wolseley's plan. With the first rays of light of September 13th we were ready to attack.

The Nile expedition

January 17th, 1885

While Colonel Urabi took control of Egypt, anarchy spread in Sudan. A Muslim cleric who called himself "the Mahdi" had started a revolt against the Egyptian administration, and he soon gathered an army of thousands of fanatics called Dervishes that crushed the Egyptian Army in several battles. The largest one was fought at El Obeid, in November 1883, where more than 10,000 Egyptians, including their British commander, Colonel Hicks, were massacred.

After El Obeid the Egyptian government and our British advisors agreed to evacuate the remaining Egyptian troops from Sudan. General Charles 'Chinese' Gordon was sent to supervise the withdrawal, but he soon found himself besieged at Khartoum. Fearing for Gordon's life, our government ordered Major-General Wolseley to organise a relief expedition. Naturally, I promptly volunteered myself to be a member of that army, and we left Alexandria at the end of October, 1884.

The year was ending when we arrived in Korti. Wolseley had already decided that we would split into two groups: the River Column would ascend the Nile River by ship, and a smaller Camel Corps would march across the desert to Metemmeh and Khartoum. That second column would be composed of four regiments mounted in camels, as well as a cavalry detachment, and the volunteers from the Guards battalions would be a part of it.

Initially we marched without any relevant incidents, but as we approached the wells at Abu Klea on January 17th, we found disturbing evidence of the presence of a large Dervish Army in the area. They outnumbered us 10 to 1, so we knew that if we broke our formation, we would be lost.

Omdurman

September 2nd, 1898

In the years that followed the Nile Expedition, only the Abyssinians and the Italians (who, on the other hand, were sworn enemies themselves) did actually fight against the Dervishes, in Southeastern Sudan. We concentrated our efforts on rebuilding Egypt, waiting for the right time to make those madmen pay for having killed Gordon.

That moment came in 1896. The Egyptian Army was now well trained, equipped and commanded, capable of launching a successful offensive in Sudan, especially if they fought alongside some British units. So an Anglo-Egyptian Army was built, and General Kitchener was appointed as its Commander-in-Chief. He soon won some important battles in Northern Sudan, and his Army, slowly but firmly, went into the heart of the Dervish territory.

In 1898 everything was ready to give the enemy the final blow and take Omdurman, the Mahdist capital, located very near Khartoum. Kitchener needed reinforcements for that action, so the 1st Battalion of the Grenadier Guards, which I commanded at that moment, was ordered to join the Anglo-Egyptian forces. In July, 1898, we left Gibraltar and sailed to Egypt. Before the end of the summer we had joined Kitchener's Army.

We went most of the way to Omdurman by train, so on 1st September we were already in Egeiga, within six miles of our destination and close to the bank of the Nile, where a gunboat flotilla waited in support. I knew that the Dervish army had camped very close to our lines, on the neighbouring hills. In the morning they would try to use their numerical superiority to their advantage, forcing us to retreat to the river shore, where they could destroy us.

Since the Pretoria Convention was signed in 1881 the British Empire had guaranteed the self-government of the two Boer republics in South Africa. But, during the decade of 1890, new problems started, concerning the rights of the British citizens in the Transvaal. I am convinced that the differences between our country and the Boer could have been easily settled at a negotiation table, but for some gentlemen with strong influence in the mining industry and the Government, greed and profit were more important than a civilized agreement. The intransigent demands of our officials led the Boer to desperation, and eventually they declared war on Britain. I suppose that they thought that, after some months of fighting, our Government would decide that the campaign was too costly, and finally we would sign a treaty. But that was not going to happen. The gold mines in the Boer territory, to the eyes of Mr Rhodes and Mr Phillips, were well worth the resources of the Crown and the lives of thousands of good British soldiers.

So the Army had to be sent to solve a problem that others had created. I sailed from Gibraltar with the 3rd battalion of the Grenadier Guards on 25th October 1899, and we arrived in Cape Town about three weeks later. I returned to the land where my life as a soldier had started, twenty years back. As our ship approached Table Bay, my mind was assaulted by many remembrances of my past battles, as well as by the impatience that I always feel when a new fight is imminent.

This time I was appointed to the Guards Brigade, which was part of Lord Methuen's 1st Infantry Division. Our orders were to relieve the town of Kimberley, that was being besieged by the Boer. On November 21st we started our advance from Orange River Bridge and the following day we found a very strong Boer position at the hills near Belmont railway station. Lord Methuen ordered our brigade to advance on Gun Hill during the night, thus outflanking the Boer lines. But due to our defective maps, at next day's dawn we found ourselves short of the enemy lines instead.

Modder River

November 28th, 1899

After driving the Boer off Belmont and Graspan we followed our advance north along the Western Cape Railway, in order to relieve Kimberley.
The next natural obstacle that we found was the confluence of the Modder and Riet rivers, where the Boer had blown the railway. Although our explorers did not find any sign of enemy presence, we approached cautiously to avoid a possible ambush. The Traansvalers and Free Staters, led by Cronjé and de la Rey, couldn't be very far away.

Despite our victories, our advance was hard and slow. The Boer had had time to fortify themselves on the hills located along the railway line to Kimberley, south of the town. They knew that it was their last line of defense. If we managed to defeat them, we would force them to lift the siege, and Kimberley would be free at last. In order to reach that objective, we had recently been reinforced by the Highland Brigade.
Although our maps were not good and our scouts could not approach the Boer lines due to the amazing marksmanship of our enemies, we believed that most of the Boer defenders were entrenched on Magersfontein Ridge. Lord Methuen ordered us to make a night march towards Magersfontein, and then launch a frontal assault on the Boer at dawn, the following day.

Diamond Hill

June 11th, 1900

As I said before, with Roberts and Kitchener came massive British reinforcements. Outnumbered four to one, the Boer had to retire from virtually all the towns and the other relevant positions, most of the time without a fight. By March 1900 they had been forced to fight a guerrilla warfare, with sporadic attacks on our supply lines.

With the aim of defeating the guerrillas Roberts and Kitchener created a system of blockhouses and ordered a scorched earth policy; Boer civilians had to be deported, farms and crops burnt, cattle shot, and wells poisoned, thus depriving the enemy of all kinds of support. I was naturally repulsed by these orders. For the first time in my life I believed that, by following them, I was not serving my country, but disgracing it. To make things even worse, the harsh South African environment was deteriorating my health alarmingly fast. Some days I was so weak that I could not even leave my private wagon and take charge of my troops.

Since we had joined the 11th división in February, and as a part of Roberts's army, we had taken Bloemfontein, Johannesburg and, finally, Pretoria, without any serious fighting. But a week after the fall of Pretoria, the enemy still wandered the hills east of the town. After months of secondary and degrading tasks we were finally given the order of attacking and forcing the Boer to retreat.

hoice: The old warrior reflects on the new warfare

September, 1912

In 1912 I started making plans for my retirement. Evelyn and I had bought a beautiful house in the country, not far from Norwich, where we intended to spend our last years after all our sons and daughters had left our old home; Michael, Christine and Margaret were married and they had already given us seven grandchildren, Thomas had been ordained a priest at the diocese of East Anglia, and William was studying in Cambridge.

I had decided that I would leave the Army in 1916, when I turned sixty, but until then I was determined to serve my country with all my strength. And at that moment that meant studying as hard as when I was a cadet. Those were turbulent times in Europe: Germany was following an aggressive and expansionist foreign policy, and it was only a matter of time before they clashed with Russia or France. When that happened, Britain coud be forced to intervene, with unpredictable consequences.

Since the war against the Boer I was aware that frontal infantry assaults against an entrenched enemy equipped with modern weapons would be costly and ultimately futile. So there I was, an old man studying, trying to find an alternative to the old methods.

I had hopes that the new airplanes could be useful at spotting the enemy troops, and maybe neutralizing their rear guard. Artillery was also an obvious choice against trenches and fortified positions, but in order to be effective, guns had to follow the advance of the infantry and provide cover fire at any given time, and that was only possible with highly experienced crews. And of course specialized infantry, like our Royal Engineers, could have an essential role in trench warfare. In fact there were too many theories and little experience in real battles, so despite all my efforts I was far from finding a definitive answer.

The following week we continued our retreat into France, and even though Von Kluck's German First Army went after us, they did not dare to engage us in combat.
This was going to change the first of September, when our 1st Cavalry Brigade had to fight at Néry against a German division. That delayed the march of all the British forces, so the German III Corps had an opportunity to get close to our I Corps. For that reason I was ordered to take positions at the Retz Forest and cover the retreat of the other units

At the Aisne: The first trenches

September 13th, 1914

When Von Kluck realised his mistake he ordered his men to turn back and fight the advancing French Sixth Army, but in doing do he opened a 30 mile gap between his forces and Von Bülow's Second Army, just in front of our forces. After some hesitation, on September 6th we started our advance. We crossed the two Morins and the Marne River, but in the strict sense there was no battle during our march to the North. Only open roads were ahead of us. To our left and our right the Germans hardly managed to hold the French, and finally they were forced to retreat to safer positions. Their summer offensive had failed, and they would never take Paris.

However, our advance was too cautious for fear of being ambushed, and that gave the enemy time to build strong defensive positions on the Northern shore of the Aisne River. The High Command believed that, if we pressed them hard enough, we could break the German lines and force them out of France and, hopefully, the war. I was not so optimistic about the chances of success of a frontal assault, but the night of September 13th the fog was extremely dense, so with God on our side maybe we would surprise the Germans.

October 21st, 1914

After the battle of the Aisne both armies tried to outflank the other in a series of engagements near the French-Belgian border. It was especially important to us, as we could not afford losing the Channel ports of Calais and Boulogne. To achieve that goal, it was imperative to stop the Germans at the Belgian town of Ypres.

Our I Corps reached Ypres on the night of October 20th. A few hours later we were advancing to the Northeast, covering the left flank of the IV Corps. Soon, we found that the German resistance was stronger than we had expected and that an enemy offensive was inminent, so we hastily built a precarious defensive line near the villlage of Langemarck. Only a few hours later, three German divisions started their assault. They were not first line units, but they clearly outnumbered us, and if they succeeded at penetrating our lines, the entire British front would be in danger.

Hohenzollern Redoubt

October 8th, 1915

In January 1915 I returned to active service and was assigned to Haig's staff, but although I found it a remarkable experience, I still longed for a divisional command. I asked for it repeatedly, until in August they offered me command of the newly formed Guards Division, composed of battalions taken from the different Guards regiments. I have no words to express my joy for having been granted the privilege of leading these most extraordinary men to battle.

The baptism of fire of the Guards Division came at the battle of Loos, a new attempt to break the German lines that started in autum. As a part of the XI Corps we were at the Army reserve, so after our first line broke through the German defences in the morning of September 25th we should have followed it as fast as possible in order to widen the gap. But our communications system was so slow that when our orders finally came and we moved to the front line, the German reserves had been mobilized and the opportunity had been lost. Our divisions kept on attacking the German positions for three weeks, but without any significative result.

In the first hours of our offensive I already knew what would happen, so I decided to adopt small-scale tactics. Since a breakthrough was impossible, I would be content with taking valuable positions located near the front line. After that, my men would dig in and resist the predictable German counterattacks, so we could wear our enemies down with relatively little losses.

On September 27th we used those tactics at the Chalk Pit Wood sector with some success, so a few days later we were ordered to go to the North and replace the 28th Division facing the Hohenzollern Redoubt, a series of fortifications and trenches near Auchy-les-Mines where the Germans had gathered nearly three infantry divisions and dozens of artillery pieces. Our mission was to repell the German counterattacks and, if possible, recover some of the defensive perimeter.

The Somme: Flers-Courcelette

September 15th, 1916

Before the end of 1915 the United Kingdom and our allies had decided to launch a series of coordinated offensives against Germany in 1916. However, our enemies attacked first at Verdun, in February, and all our strategy had to be redesigned. Our offensive would take place at the River Somme, as initially planned, but with little support from the French, who had been forced to send reinforcements to the Verdun front.

Haig had ordered that the objectives were to relieve pressure on the French at Verdun and inflict loss on the enemy. I objected that our own losses would also be very high, since the logistical mistakes that we had made at Loos were far from solved. He told me that he understood my concerns, but that the offensive of the Somme was a strategic necessity. The French Army was in serious risk of collapsing at Verdun and, if we did not intervene, they could actually be forced to surrender before the end of the year. He told me that, as long as I accomplished my objectives, I was free to try any measure that could save the lives of the men under my command, especially my small-scale tactics.

And thus July 1st, the first day of the Somme, came. My Army Corps started again on the reserve, so we were spared the horror of this initial push. A few hours later I was informed that my son William had died in one of the first assaults, just like near 20,000 British soldiers did before the end of that day. For some time I could barely speak, eat or sleep. I thought about retiring and giving way to younger officers, but I finally decided to stay. My divisions had been among the ones with the least losses when they fought on the first line, so although I could not save my own son, if I kept on fighting maybe I could save the sons of others.

My Army Corps was not really engaged until the third week of July, when we fought with great determination at Delville Wood and later at Guillemont. Then September came, and with it, the time for the final assault against the last German line of defense, between Flers and Morval. The German fortifications were impressive, but this time we counted on a new, secret weapon, that supposedly would help us to advance through the oceans of mud and barberd wire. It was our last chance for a total breakthrough. If we could not break the German lines, all that would be left would be the battle of attrition.

Although severely weakened, the German Army was still a magnificent war machine and a terrible enemy. Between the end of the campaign of the Somme and the summer of 1917 the Germans managed to conquer Romania, to bring Russia to a revolution and to the verge of surrender, and to defeat the French at the Aisne. Some French units actually mutinied, and for some days it seemed that the front could collapse. Our own offensive at Messines had only a limited success, and our enemies had been able to take reinforcements to the Italian front. In fact, the only real good news was that, finally, the United States declared war on Germany.

Under these circumstances, Haig decided that it was necessary to relieve our allies and wear out the Germans, so he ordered an attack on the Ypres salient that, if successful, would secure the Belgian coast. The plan had been carefully made, and due to the coordinated use of planes, tanks, artillery and elite infantry our methods for gathering intelligence and assaulting fortified positions had improved remarkably. On the other hand, so had the German defensive tactics, and Haig's prestige had suffered after the Somme, so our offensive was controversial from the beginning.

Acknowledging my past victories with relatively few losses, Haig decided that my Army Corps would lead our first attack, crossing the Ypres Canal at the dawn of July 31st. Our objectives were the very same places where we had fought in 1914, now devastated after years of war. In front of us there were three German divisions and several lines of fortifications.

Cambrai: the offensive

November 20th, 1917

Although the third battle of Ypres was not the success that Haig had hoped for, it had proved that our Army, by using the new methods in combined arms, could pierce even the deepest German defence line. However, our enemies possessed an outstanding ability for mobilizing their reserves and counterattacking in a matter of hours, so they had been able to stop all our former offensives before we had had any real chance to inflict on them a decisive defeat. But if we could launch a surprise attack on the Germans, so that they could not know when or where it would take place, even the Hindenburg Line might fall.

With that aim, an offensive was planned in the Cambrai before the end of 1917. We would attack with artillery and veteran infantry units, supported by a large number of tanks. It was a very dangerous move, since the German defences were formidable, but so was our determination. We knew that Germany was about to win the war in the East, so in a few weeks they could use new divisions against us. We had to force them to surrender before that could happen.

Cambrai: the German counterattack

November 30th, 1917

Only three days later, a strong and extremely well-planned German counterattack began. On our right flank, near Gouzeaucourt, the break was swift. Two of our divisions seemed to evaporate, and the Guards, still recovering after the combats at Bourlon and Fontaine, were called as reinforcements to that area.

Arriving there, we found a horrific sight; hundreds of half-dressed men, surprised in their sleep and on the verge of panic, were fleeing the front, without rifles or equipment. Among them there were many officers. They talked about a massive German bombardment prior to the attack, and there were rumours that the enemy had managed to penetrate deep into our lines, with the help of some kind of new assault infantry against which our trenches and bunkers had been useless.

I knew that if panic spread all our front could be in serious danger, I ordered my men to keep calm, to stand firm at Gouzeaucourt, and to defend our lines at all costs.

March 24th, 1918

The war was a terrible burden for Britain, but it was still worse for Germany. It had taken away most of our enemies' reserves, and without any replacements for their lost men and equipment, their army would die out before the end of the year. Their only chance was a final, decisive blow with everything they had left, so that they could outflank our army and defeat us. After acheiving that, they thought that France would ask for an armistice, and I believe that they were right.

So in the spring of 1918 Germany launched a most vicious attack. They used all the knowledge thay had acquired on trench warfare during these years, and I must confess that, initially, the execution of their plan was close to perfection. They advanced deeply behind our lines, disrupting our communications and menacing Arras and Amiens. Just as it had happened at Cambrai, some of our units were on the verge of panic, and if we did not stop the German advance inmediately, there was a real danger of being trapped between our enemies and the sea. Again, it was my duty to hold our lines and save my country from a most embarrasing defeat.

Battle of the Selle

October 17th, 1918

The next summer eveything was ready for our final assaults on the Germans. In August, we broke the front lines and we recovered all the terrain thad had been lost during the German Spring Offensive. In September, the Hindenburg Line collapsed, and in October our enemies were retreating through the territory that they had gained in 1914. It had taken us four long, terrible years to go back to the battlefields where the British Expeditionary Force had had its baptism of fire. But now the circumstances were very different. Then, the Germans believed that they were unstoppable. Now, they were gathering their last forces in a desperate attempt to avoid a total rout, that could lead them to a general mutiny and to a revolution of unpredictable consequences.
